1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor a cross-country motorcycle trip, pack protective riding gear and weather layers, essential documents and personal items, water and snacks, navigation and charging basics, and a compact motorcycle-specific toolkit with tire-repair supplies that match your wheels. Choose luggage that fits the bike, secure and balance the load, and stay within the motorcycle and luggage makers’ limits. Adjust the list for your route, weather, remoteness, trip length, and whether you’ll camp or stay indoors.
What to pack for the ride
Use this checklist as a starting point, not a universal prescription. The right load depends on your motorcycle, route, destination, trip length, conditions, and lodging. ADAC likewise advises adapting its checklist to the rider, motorcycle, and destination (ADAC’s motorcycle check guidance).
Riding gear and weather protection
- A properly fitting motorcycle helmet and suitable eye protection.
- Protective motorcycle jacket and pants, gloves, and riding boots.
- Base or insulating layers to handle temperature changes, plus riding-appropriate rain gear. Plan for conditions along the route: mountain elevations, for example, can bring a sudden temperature drop even when the day began warm.
- As needed, earplugs, spare gloves, glasses or contact lenses, and a compatible spare visor. The American Motorcyclist Association touring checklist also includes earplugs, spare glasses, and a spare face shield.
Documents and personal essentials
- Driver’s license, motorcycle registration, insurance information, and identification appropriate to the route. For a cross-border trip, check current entry and document requirements with the official authorities for the countries you will actually visit; an older touring checklist is not a reliable source for current border rules.
- Wallet, payment cards, and some cash.
- Phone and charging cable or charger. Download maps before entering areas with weak cellular service, or carry a paper map as a backup.
- Personal medication, prescription details if you may need a refill, a basic first-aid kit, sunscreen, insect repellent, and lip balm.
- Water and snacks, particularly where services are sparse. Plan fuel stops around your motorcycle’s actual range and the route’s fuel availability.
- Compact toiletries, a small towel, and a limited change of clothing. Rewearing clothes and doing laundry can keep luggage manageable.
- A spare key and emergency contact information.
Tools and motorcycle supplies
- A compact toolkit with tools that fit your motorcycle and that you know how to use. Consider a tire-pressure gauge, spare fuses, flashlight, zip ties, tape, and multitool. Harley-Davidson’s road-trip planning guide and the AMA checklist identify several of these as useful tour supplies.
- A tire-repair kit for your specific wheel and tire setup, plus a compatible way to reinflate the tire. Tube and tubeless tires require different considerations; not every kit works for every motorcycle.
- If your motorcycle has a chain, consider chain-maintenance supplies or a suitable spare link for the route. ADAC recommends checking chain wear and adjustment; chain spray can be useful on tour, particularly after rain.
- Optional items, depending on the motorcycle and route, include jumper cables or a battery pack, spare bulbs, and model-specific consumables.
A roadside plug and inflation method may be an option for some tubeless punctures, but do not assume a plug suits every tire or that a roadside repair is permanent. The appropriate response depends on the damage and the motorcycle’s setup.
Choose luggage that fits the motorcycle
Motorcycle-specific saddlebags, tank or tail bags, and top cases serve different needs. Pick a setup that works with your motorcycle’s mounting points and hardware, holds what your trip requires, and keeps frequently used items accessible. Harley-Davidson notes that tank and tail bags can be practical for small essentials, while hard top cases can provide locks and weather resistance at the cost of added weight and mounting hardware (How to Carry Luggage on Your Motorcycle).

Set tire pressure or suspension only as the motorcycle maker’s instructions specify for the load.
Harley-Davidson recommends basic checks before each day’s ride; ADAC emphasizes preparing for the actual route, load, and passenger use. Consult the motorcycle owner’s manual for model-specific checks and settings.
