How to Plan Fuel Stops on a Long Motorcycle Ride

Estimate your motorcycle’s realistic range, map fuel stops before remote stretches, and leave room for closed stations, detours, and needed breaks.

Plan fuel stops around the distance your own motorcycle can reliably cover—not the tank’s advertised capacity or a dashboard estimate. Map stations along the route, identify the longest gap, and build in an earlier option so a closed pump, detour, or tired rider does not leave you counting on reserve.

Estimate a realistic range for your motorcycle

There is no dependable mileage figure that applies to every motorcycle or trip. Fuel use changes with the bike, load, route, speed, and riding conditions. Use your experience on the same motorcycle to estimate how far a tank takes you under conditions like the ones you expect, then plan to refuel before reaching that limit.

A full-tank range is a planning estimate, not a promise. A remaining-range display is also an estimate: BMW Motorrad’s manual for a specific model says its calculated range is approximate and warns riders not to use the full indicated distance before refuelling. Other motorcycles’ displays and reserve systems may work differently, so consult your own owner’s manual. BMW Motorrad owner’s manual

Map fuel stops against the actual route

Before setting out, check where fuel is available along the route, especially before remote or sparsely serviced stretches. Note the longest gap between likely stops, and identify an alternate station or route if the first option is closed or unavailable. Harley-Davidson advises riders to learn their motorcycle’s full-tank range and get fuel when it is available rather than waiting until it is needed. Do not assume a station shown on a map will be open or that its information will be available without mobile service. Download maps before entering areas with poor coverage, or carry a paper map as a backup. Offline features vary: MotoLegs says its station database works offline, while route planning and Apple Maps data require a connection. Check the capabilities of the app you intend to use before relying on it. MotoLegs

Choose a stopping point with margin

Set a planned stop before the longest fuel gap becomes a close call. If a station is available earlier than expected, filling up can be the safer choice; you do not need to wait until the tank is low to make a stop worthwhile. Leave room in the plan for a detour, a closed station, or a change in conditions rather than treating the map’s shortest route as the only workable one.

Reserve is a warning, not a routine target for reaching the next pump. Reserve quantity and operation vary by model. Hero MotoCorp advises refuelling as soon as possible after switching to reserve; BMW Motorrad warns against running the tank dry. Follow the instructions for your motorcycle rather than applying another model’s reserve capacity or range to yours. Hero MotoCorp’s fuel-level guidance

Make each stop support the rest of the ride

When practical, choose stops where you can refuel, drink water, eat, use the restroom, and rest. Fuel planning should not force you to ride on when you are tired or thirsty just because the tank still has range. Weather, road conditions, and how you feel can all make an earlier break the sensible choice. NSW Government guidance for group riding recommends frequent stops that serve more than one purpose and include hydration.

Coordinate fuel stops on a group ride

Share the route and planned stops with the group before departure. Start with full tanks and, where practical, refuel together so one rider’s range or a missed stop does not disrupt the ride. Agree on a backup stopping point for remote stretches. NSW Government group-riding guidance recommends sharing stops, keeping tanks full, and refuelling together; its advice is specific to group coordination in New South Wales. NSW Government group-riding guidance

Consider extra fuel only for a verified gap

A suitable reserve fuel container can be an option if a route has a confirmed gap beyond the range you are comfortable relying on. There is no universal container type or capacity for every motorcycle. Before carrying one, check your owner’s manual, make sure it can be secured and carried compatibly with the bike, and follow applicable local rules. Harley-Davidson discusses considering reserve fuel when range is uncertain but does not prescribe one standard type or size. Harley-Davidson’s road-trip planning guidance

A practical pre-ride checklist

  • Estimate range from your own motorcycle’s experience under a similar load and route.
  • Check the owner’s manual for how its fuel gauge, remaining-range display, and reserve work.
  • Mark fuel options on the route, paying particular attention to the longest gap.
  • Choose an alternate station or route and prepare maps for areas without service.
  • Plan stops that also allow you to hydrate, eat, use the restroom, and rest.
  • For a group, share the route and stops, start with full tanks, and coordinate refuelling.
  • Change the plan when fatigue, weather, road conditions, or fuel availability call for an earlier stop.
