Before checking a motorcycle problem, get yourself and the bike out of traffic. Signal, steer to a safe place, and use hazard lights or a reflective warning device if available and lawful locally. Then decide whether the fault can be addressed under your motorcycle’s owner manual or whether you should stop riding and arrange recovery. A roadside kit helps with preparation; it does not make every repair safe to attempt at the shoulder.
First, get to a safe stopping place
Keep control of the motorcycle and move as far off the road as conditions allow. Choose firm ground where you can stop without putting yourself in traffic. New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi advises signaling and steering to a safe place, warning other road users with hazard lights or a reflective warning triangle, and not standing in the road or on a motorway. Ontario’s motorcycle handbook likewise advises signaling before leaving the road and pulling as far off as possible. These are jurisdiction-specific examples; follow local traffic laws and roadside guidance.
- Do not inspect the motorcycle while standing in a live lane or exposed roadside position.
- If you are on a motorway or another high-speed road, use local emergency procedures. Waka Kotahi advises staying with the motorcycle if you have no phone and walking would be unsafe.
- Once you are in a safer place, assess the symptoms before deciding whether to inspect, repair according to the manual, or call for help.

What to do about specific problems
Tire puncture or blowout
After stopping safely, check the tire and wheel only from a safe position. Use the repair procedure specified for your motorcycle and tire. Honda’s Africa Twin owner-manual page, for example, describes emergency puncture repair with a tire repair kit; that does not mean every kit, tire, or puncture can be repaired the same way. A motorcycle tire repair kit is useful only when it is compatible with your tire and its instructions permit the repair. If you cannot restore the tire safely under the manual’s procedure, do not continue riding; arrange professional repair or recovery.

Stuck throttle
A stuck throttle is an emergency, not a roadside adjustment project. Concentrate on maintaining control and stopping safely; do not attempt an improvised model-agnostic fix. Consult your motorcycle’s manual and your rider training for the appropriate emergency response. If the throttle does not operate normally after the bike is stopped, do not ride on until the problem has been properly resolved.

Wobble or unstable handling
A wobble can indicate a handling or mechanical fault. Ontario’s handbook lists possible causes such as windshield fit, steering-head bearings, worn steering parts, wheel alignment or bearings, loose spokes, and tire tread design. Stop as safely as possible, then inspect only from a protected location. Do not resume the trip until the cause has been identified and corrected; if you cannot establish that the motorcycle is safe, arrange recovery.

Broken or failing chain
A worn or stretched chain, or worn sprockets, can contribute to chain failure. A broken chain can cut drive, and if it locks the rear wheel the motorcycle may skid. Maintain control and pull over as soon as it is safe. There is no universal roadside chain-repair procedure for every motorcycle, so follow the owner manual or have a qualified mechanic assess it rather than improvising a repair.
Overheating or possible engine seizure
Loss of power or a change in engine sound may warn of a serious engine problem. Ontario’s handbook states, “Overheating or a lack of lubrication causes engine seizure.” Pull over and stop the engine, then let it cool and have it thoroughly checked for damage. Adding oil and restarting may be possible in some circumstances, but it is not a substitute for inspection; do not continue riding an overheating, oil-starved, or potentially damaged engine.

Prepare the motorcycle before departure
Use the maintenance schedule in your own motorcycle’s manual rather than treating a generic checklist as a substitute. Harley-Davidson’s trip-planning guidance recommends checking tire pressure and condition, fluids, the air filter, brake pads, the chain where fitted, throttle and brake cables where applicable, lights, signals, and horn. It recommends dealer inspection if you lack the time or skill to check the motorcycle thoroughly.
- Review scheduled maintenance and address overdue service before the trip.
- Check the condition and pressure of the tires, and inspect the listed fluids and service items for your model.
- Confirm brakes, applicable chain and cables, lights, signals, and horn are working as specified.
- If carrying luggage or a passenger, consult the manual for the appropriate suspension preload and tire-pressure setup.
These are manufacturer recommendations, not universal specifications; the owner manual governs the actual checks and settings for your motorcycle.

Start with the tools and equipment your motorcycle’s manual identifies for routine checks and emergency use. A compatible motorcycle tire repair kit may be useful for an eligible puncture, but it is not a guarantee that the tire can be repaired roadside. Do not assume a kit is appropriate for your tire construction or the location or nature of its damage. Match equipment to the motorcycle and follow the manual’s procedure.

Preparation also means knowing how you will summon assistance: keep your recovery provider’s contact details accessible, and check coverage before departure. The available services and eligibility can differ by country, provider, motorcycle, and terms.
When to call for recovery
Arrange assistance rather than continuing when the motorcycle cannot be made safe using its own manual, when a fault affects control or handling, or when you cannot confidently diagnose and resolve the problem from a safe location. Examples include an unresolved wobble, a damaged tire that the specified procedure cannot safely restore, a chain failure, a throttle that does not work normally, and suspected engine damage.
Roadside-assistance plans may offer services such as battery help, fuel assistance, minor on-site repairs, flat-tire assistance, key help, or towing, but these are examples rather than a promise of coverage. Royal Enfield’s Qatar page and BMW Motorrad’s US page describe different services and terms for their respective markets. Check your own plan’s country limits, eligibility, charges for parts or materials, and towing provisions before relying on it.
