Check the Forester’s complete 17-character vehicle identification number (VIN) in Subaru’s official Vehicle Recalls lookup. Recall status is tied to that individual vehicle, not simply to the Forester name or model year. If the result shows an open recall, contact a nearby Subaru retailer to arrange the recall service. For help interpreting the result, Subaru lists recall support at 1-844-373-6614, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. EST; confirm the current number and hours when you call.
Why the VIN check matters
A recall campaign can apply to some vehicles in a production population but not to every Forester. Subaru’s process therefore requires the full 17-character VIN and returns a vehicle-specific result. Searching only for “Subaru Forester,” relying on a model year, or using a partial VIN cannot establish whether your particular car has an outstanding campaign. The VIN is the identifying information Subaru uses to match the vehicle to its recall records.

Subaru’s lookup also has a stated historical limit: recalls issued before February 1998 are not included in the online results. That limitation matters if you are checking a very old vehicle or trying to reconstruct its entire recall history. It does not mean a result is wrong; it means the online tool does not cover campaigns issued before that date.
Check for an open recall step by step
- Locate the complete VIN. Use the 17-character number shown on the vehicle or its paperwork. Enter every character exactly as displayed; a single transposed character can produce a result for a different vehicle or no match.
- Open Subaru’s Vehicle Recalls page. Go directly to subaru.com/recalls.html and submit the full VIN in the recall search field.
- Read the status attached to that VIN. Treat an “open” or outstanding recall as an unresolved safety action for that vehicle. A result that does not list an open recall is not a substitute for checking the VIN again if you suspect a typing error.
- Keep the result available. Save or record the recall name or campaign information shown on the page. The exact wording will help a retailer or Subaru support representative identify the same record when you arrange service.
The lookup page is the appropriate starting point because it is Subaru’s own vehicle-specific database. It is more useful than a generic list of Forester recalls, since those lists cannot tell you whether a particular VIN has already received a repair or is included in a campaign.

What to do when the lookup shows an open recall
Contact a Subaru retailer
Subaru directs owners with outstanding recalls to schedule the work with a nearby Subaru retailer. Use the retailer’s service department and provide the VIN plus the recall information from the lookup. Ask the service adviser to confirm that the appointment is being booked as recall work and to explain the remedy identified for your vehicle.
The online result does not establish how quickly a repair can be completed, whether a part must be ordered, or whether the retailer has a particular appointment requirement. Ask those operational questions when you call. If the retailer cannot immediately complete the work, ask what the next available date is and what Subaru recommends you do with the vehicle while you wait.
Ask for vehicle-specific safety instructions
A general “open recall” result does not, by itself, say whether you should continue driving, park the Forester, avoid carrying passengers, or take another precaution. The available Subaru guidance does not identify a specific Forester VIN, defect, or remedy here. Follow the instructions in the recall notice and ask Subaru or the retailer for interim driving guidance that applies to your exact campaign. Do not infer a safety restriction—or assume that none exists—from the model name alone.

Bring the information the service team needs
- The complete 17-character VIN used for the lookup.
- The recall title, campaign wording, or screenshot of the result, if available.
- Your preferred contact information and any scheduling constraints.
Those items help the retailer find the correct vehicle record without guessing which Forester is involved. The retailer can then explain the repair process and any vehicle-specific instructions.
If the result is confusing or you cannot complete the search
Call Subaru’s recall support line
Subaru’s customer-support information lists 1-844-373-6614 for recall assistance, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. EST. Hours and telephone numbers can change, so verify the current details on Subaru’s support page before relying on them. Have the full VIN in front of you; support can use it to discuss the vehicle-specific record rather than a general Forester campaign.

Use an authorized retailer when the online record does not answer your question
A retailer can explain the listed remedy and arrange the service. Ask the adviser to check the VIN if the website returns an unexpected message, if the recall description is difficult to understand, or if you believe work was completed previously but the campaign still appears open. The retailer, rather than a generic repair shop, is the route Subaru identifies for scheduling outstanding recall work.

Understand what a “no open recall” result does and does not prove
A clean result means the lookup did not display an open recall for the VIN you entered within the database’s coverage. It does not diagnose a mechanical problem, confirm that the vehicle has never had a recall, or replace a professional assessment of a symptom. Recheck the VIN for accuracy, remember the February 1998 cutoff, and contact Subaru or a retailer if the result conflicts with a mailed notice or another official communication.
Use MySubaru to receive future alerts
Subaru says owners can create a free MySubaru account and associate their vehicle with it to receive immediate notifications about recalls or campaigns. The customer-support explanation is available at How can I find out if my vehicle is affected by a campaign or recall?. This is an additional monitoring route; it does not replace the VIN lookup when you need to check the Forester now.

In the MySubaru app, Subaru says open-recall alerts receive priority on the home page. If your vehicle is already associated with the account, look at the Vehicle Status area and follow the alert to the relevant information. Keep the account’s vehicle association current if ownership or vehicle information changes. If an alert appears, use the VIN-specific details and schedule the work through a Subaru retailer rather than assuming the notification itself completes the recall.

What the recall may cost
The general Subaru open-recall instructions reviewed here direct owners to a retailer but do not state one universal cost policy for every recall. Do not assume a price, reimbursement rule, loaner arrangement, or other benefit without confirming the terms of the specific notice and with the retailer.

There is a narrower exception in Subaru’s Takata airbag information: Subaru says open Takata recall repairs at local Subaru retailers are provided at no cost. Common mistakes to avoid
- Checking only the model name: recall status is specific to the VIN, so a Forester recall list cannot confirm your vehicle’s status.
- Entering a partial or incorrect VIN: use all 17 characters and verify them before treating the result as authoritative.
- Assuming a clean result means the car is safe: the lookup addresses recall records, not every possible fault or symptom.
- Guessing the driving restriction: the campaign result and Subaru or the retailer should supply instructions for the actual vehicle and remedy.
- Waiting for an app alert before checking: MySubaru notifications are useful for monitoring, but the website lookup is the direct way to check the VIN now.
- Buying parts or using a generic scanner first: no tool or replacement part is needed to perform Subaru’s official VIN check, and an unspecified recall should not be self-repaired.
- Assuming every recall is free: confirm the cost terms for the particular campaign; the no-cost statement cited above is specifically for open Takata recall repairs.
A practical checklist
- Write down the complete 17-character VIN from the Forester or its paperwork.
- Run that VIN through Subaru’s Vehicle Recalls lookup.
- If an open recall appears, save the campaign wording and contact a nearby Subaru retailer.
- Ask the retailer what remedy applies, when the work can be performed, and what to do with the vehicle before the appointment.
- If the result is unclear, call Subaru’s recall support line after verifying its current number and hours, or ask an authorized retailer to review the VIN.
- Create or update a free MySubaru account so future recall and campaign notifications can reach you.
Following those steps gives you a documented, VIN-specific answer and a direct path to completion without guessing from the Forester’s model name or from a general internet list.
