Do not drive at night, in fog, heavy rain, snow, or other conditions where the remaining light is inadequate. First identify which lighting function has failed, then check your vehicle identification number (VIN) for an open recall before buying parts. Depending on the exact model, year, market and lamp design, the remedy may be a software update, LED driver-module service, inspection, or complete headlamp replacement.
Why a dim LED headlight needs immediate attention
Headlamps do two jobs: they illuminate the road and help other road users see your vehicle. Transport Canada warns that headlamps, parking lamps and daytime running lights that do not work correctly can reduce visibility and make a vehicle less visible, increasing crash risk. Treat a failed low beam, high beam or related lamp as a reason to arrange prompt service rather than continuing normal night driving.

If output is inadequate for the conditions, park the vehicle and arrange a safe way to reach a qualified repairer. Daylight driving on a well-lit route may still be unsafe if the vehicle is difficult for others to see, so use your judgment and local law. Do not attempt roadside electrical work in traffic or poor weather.
Identify exactly what has failed
“The LED headlight is out” can describe several different circuits. Before contacting a dealer, record the following:

- Whether the affected function is the low beam, high beam, daytime running light (DRL), parking or position lamp, turn signal, or the whole headlamp.
- Whether one side or both sides are affected.
- Whether the failure is constant, intermittent, flickering, or only present after switching between lighting modes.
- Any instrument-cluster message, including an advanced-front-lighting warning, and whether a turn-signal telltale flashes unusually fast or indicates a bulb fault.
- When the problem began and whether it followed rain, a collision, body work, a battery event or a previous lamp replacement.
These observations help a technician, but they do not prove the failed component. Similar symptoms can come from an assembly, an LED driver or control module, or software.
Check the owner’s manual before touching the lamp
Open the manual for the exact model year and market and look up the exterior-lighting or bulb-replacement section. LED systems are not configured identically across Ford vehicles. In one Ford manual, the instruction reads: “Headlamp bulbs are LED and are not serviceable. See an authorized dealer if they fail.” That wording applies to the manual and configuration in question; it is not a universal rule for every Ford.
If your manual identifies the LED unit as non-serviceable, do not pry open the housing, substitute a generic LED bulb, or swap an internal board based on an online symptom description. A sealed lamp may contain optics, a driver and control electronics that require model-specific programming or initialization. Follow the manual’s dealer instruction.

Run a VIN-specific recall check before purchasing parts
Recall coverage is tied to the individual vehicle, not simply to a model name. Enter the VIN in the recall database for the country where the vehicle is registered. In the United States, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) lookup identifies unrepaired safety recalls and advises owners to contact a local dealer for the remedy. In Canada, use Transport Canada’s recall database and then confirm eligibility with Ford or a dealer.
Have the dealer verify the campaign, remedy status and whether the repair is provided without charge. A recall may cover inspection, programming, a module, or an entire lamp. Do not order a replacement assembly until the VIN result and diagnosis establish that an out-of-pocket part is actually required.
Documented Ford LED-lighting failure paths
The following campaigns show why symptoms alone cannot determine the repair. They are examples for specific vehicles and markets, not a Ford-wide diagnosis.

Improperly manufactured headlamp assemblies
Transport Canada recall 2026451, first published September 23, 2026 and updated October 7, 2026, covers certain 2025, 2026 and 2027 Expedition vehicles and certain 2026 F-250, F-350, F-450 and F-550 Super Duty vehicles in Canada. Depending on the lamp style and model, DRLs, parking lamps, low beams and/or high beams may be dim or inoperative. Ford’s stated remedy is owner notification followed by dealer inspection and headlamp replacement when necessary. This Canadian listing does not establish eligibility in another country.

LED driver-module failure
Transport Canada recall 2025417 identifies certain 2025 Ford Mustang, Mustang Mach-E and Lincoln Nautilus vehicles. A failed LED driver module may affect high and low beams, parking lamps, DRLs and turn signals. The listing also describes an “Advanced Front Lighting Feature Temporarily Unavailable” warning and a turn-signal telltale that flashes as it would when a bulb fails. The remedy is dealer inspection and, where required, driver-module replacement.
Software as the remedy
Transport Canada recall 2025704 describes potential LED driver-module failure and says eligible vehicles can receive an over-the-air update or a dealer software update. Do not assume an update applies to your Ford: availability depends on VIN, market and campaign status. A dealer can confirm whether the vehicle is eligible and whether a physical fault still needs repair.

Earlier F-150 programming and module campaigns
Ford campaign instructions hosted by NHTSA for 2022 F-150 vehicles include LED and headlamp-control-module programming. The instructions specify two reprogramming sequences and warn that interrupted programming can leave the headlamps nonfunctional. A separate 2022 F-150 campaign calls for replacing both left and right LED control modules and completing Ford diagnostic steps; flicker may continue until a body-control-module/LIN-module initialization procedure is performed. These are technician procedures, not general do-it-yourself instructions. Do not interrupt a programming session or disconnect power while a prescribed update is running.
Replacement-part compliance problems
Ford’s April 2024 equipment-recall notice concerned certain replacement high-series LED headlamps previously installed on some 2018–2019 Super Duty trucks. Those lamps might not comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 108 and could be too bright for other drivers. Ford authorized free dealer inspection and replacement when required. The case illustrates why a lamp that physically fits is not automatically a legal or safe lamp.

Earlier F-150 DRL configuration recall
Ford reported in 2020 that select 2018–2020 F-150s with LED headlamps had DRLs that did not dim as required during a specified lighting-switch transition. The announced remedy was a body-control-module software configuration update. Ford reported 166,196 affected vehicles in the United States and federal territories and 50,989 in Canada. Those figures belong to that particular recall, not to all Ford LED-headlight failures.

Choose the repair path only after diagnosis

There is no universal “best” repair. The correct choice depends on the affected function and side, the exact lamp design, recall coverage, and whether the manufacturer treats the LED unit as serviceable.
If no recall appears
- Preserve the evidence. Photograph the dim or flickering lamp in a safe, stationary setting and note warning messages, operating conditions and whether the fault is intermittent.
- Book a qualified diagnosis. Tell the shop the model year, trim, lighting package, affected side and function, and provide the VIN. Ask the technician to check Ford campaign information before replacing parts.
- Ask what failed. The written diagnosis should identify whether the proposed repair concerns the lamp assembly, driver/control module, wiring or software. The available campaign evidence does not support a generic fuse, wiring or code-reading instruction for every Ford, so avoid approving a broad parts swap without a vehicle-specific explanation.
- Verify the replacement. If an assembly is required, confirm left or right side, model year, trim, lighting package, market compliance and VIN fitment. A generic “Ford LED bulb” is not a universal solution for an integrated LED headlamp.
- Check the result before leaving. Test low and high beams, DRLs, parking lamps, turn signals, warnings and any adaptive-lighting functions. Confirm that the beam aim and lamp operation are correct after the repair.
What not to do
- Do not drive at night with a failed low beam or with output too poor for the conditions.
- Do not assume both sides have the same fault because one side is dim.
- Do not buy a lamp solely because an online listing says it fits a broad range of Fords.
- Do not install an unverified used or aftermarket assembly without checking compliance and exact application.
- Do not perform module coding or interrupt programming unless you are following the manufacturer’s documented procedure with the required equipment.
- Do not infer a failure rate, expected service life or repair price from another Ford model. The documented sources do not establish Ford-wide figures for any of those measures.
Questions to ask the dealer or repairer
- Is there an open recall or service campaign for this VIN in my country?
- Which function has failed, and which component does the diagnosis identify?
- Is the LED unit serviceable on this exact configuration?
- Does the remedy require programming, initialization or replacement of both sides?
- Will the repair be covered by a recall, warranty or customer-pay authorization?
- Does the proposed part meet the lighting requirements for my market and match the vehicle’s trim and lighting package?
Bottom line
Stop treating a failed or too-dim Ford LED headlight as a bulb-shopping problem. Keep the vehicle out of inadequate-light conditions, identify the affected function, consult the exact owner’s manual and check the VIN for a recall. Only after Ford or a qualified technician confirms the fault should you choose software service, a driver module or a complete headlamp assembly.
