Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePull over as soon as it is safe, switch off the vehicle, get everyone out, move well away from the car and traffic, and call your local emergency number. Do not return for belongings, open the hood or trunk if fire may be underneath, or try to fight the fire.
What to do immediately
- Stop somewhere safe. Signal and pull out of traffic if you can do so safely. Turn on your hazard lights if it is safe. Do not take a risky route or delay getting out to protect the vehicle.
- Switch off the vehicle and evacuate. Get every occupant out promptly. Leave belongings behind and do not go back to the car.
- Move away from the vehicle and traffic. Keep other people clear, too. Official distance guidance varies by location and incident; follow instructions from local emergency dispatchers and firefighters.
- Call the local emergency number. Give the operator your location and say if the vehicle is electric or hybrid. Follow the dispatcher’s instructions.
The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) says to move at least 100 feet from a vehicle fire and call 911 in the United States. The Singapore Civil Defence Force’s checklist says to evacuate more than 15 metres and call 995. These are jurisdiction-specific instructions, not a single universal distance or emergency number.
What not to do
- Do not try to put the fire out yourself. The USFA says, “Do not try to fight the fire yourself.”
- Do not open the hood or trunk if fire may be underneath. The USFA warns that opening it could make the fire grow.
- Do not re-enter the vehicle. Stay clear and let emergency responders handle the incident.
If the vehicle is electric or hybrid
Tell emergency services that an electric or hybrid vehicle is involved, then stay clear and follow their directions. Do not approach or handle high-voltage components. The USFA/NHTSA guide on electric-vehicle fires is intended for emergency responders, not as a public firefighting procedure.
For an EV involved in a crash or other damage, Queensland Fire Department guidance says to keep at least 30 metres away, call Triple Zero (000), and identify the vehicle as an EV. It warns that a damaged battery may ignite hours, days or weeks later. Do not charge or use a damaged EV until a qualified technician has inspected and approved it. These Queensland instructions apply to that jurisdiction; elsewhere, follow local emergency-service guidance.

Optional roadside visibility
If a high-visibility vest is immediately available, it may help make you visible to traffic after you have evacuated. Do not delay leaving the vehicle to retrieve one, and do not treat it as protection from fire. Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire & Rescue Service advises making yourself visible and calling 999 for the fire service.

The USFA recommends regular servicing by a trained mechanic and safe handling of fuel containers. These steps may help with prevention, but they do not replace evacuation and an emergency call if a fire starts.
