Follow any “do not drive” or “park outside” warning immediately. Then ask what is unavailable and when the dealer or automaker will update you. A delayed remedy is different from a dealer refusing a repair that the recall notice says is ready.
There is no single parts-availability deadline that applies to every recall, and a repair delay does not by itself tell you whether your vehicle is safe to use. The next steps depend on the instructions and status for your specific vehicle identification number (VIN).

1. Confirm the recall and the status for your vehicle
Look up your vehicle identification number (VIN) using NHTSA’s recall lookup, then compare the result with the notice from the manufacturer. The VIN lookup displays recall information supplied by the manufacturer; it is a useful status check, not a substitute for reading the notice or asking the automaker about an unclear case. Save the campaign number and notice so you can refer to the same recall when speaking with the dealer or manufacturer.
Check that the recall is open and applies to your specific vehicle. If the lookup and dealer information do not match, contact the manufacturer using the details in the notice and ask it to confirm the campaign status for your VIN. NHTSA recommends checking for recalls twice a year as a general habit, but when you already have an open recall, use the campaign’s updates rather than waiting for a routine check.

When you check, note the campaign or recall number, the defect described, and whether the result gives a remedy status. Those details help you distinguish “this recall applies to my vehicle” from “the repair can be performed now.” If you have a notice in hand, keep it even if you also use the online lookup: the notice contains the manufacturer’s instructions and contact information for problems obtaining the remedy.
2. Follow the safety instructions while you wait
Do not assume the vehicle is safe to drive just because the repair is delayed, and do not assume every recall requires the same precaution. Read the manufacturer’s notice for any interim instructions, including whether to stop driving or park the vehicle outside. NHTSA’s March 3, 2026 consumer alert says to follow automaker instructions, including “do not drive” or “park outside” warnings. See NHTSA’s consumer alert.
If the notice does not explain what to do in your circumstances, ask the manufacturer for guidance specific to your VIN and the defect before continuing to use the vehicle. For example, if you are unsure whether an instruction applies to where or how you park, do not replace it with a general assumption about recall risk; ask the automaker to clarify. This article cannot determine whether a particular vehicle is safe to drive.
NHTSA says that when a manufacturer needs extended time to develop a remedy, it must send an interim notice describing short-term actions consumers can take to reduce the likelihood of the defect occurring. That does not mean every campaign has the same interim instructions; use the directions for your vehicle. If you have not received a notice or cannot find the instructions, contact the manufacturer rather than guessing what precaution to take.
3. Find out exactly what is unavailable
“Not available yet” can mean different things: a part has not arrived, the manufacturer has not issued repair instructions, or the dealer has not received an allocation. Ask the service department to identify which applies. A clear answer helps you understand whether the issue is with the remedy itself or with that dealer’s ability to perform it.

- What part, procedure, or allocation is missing?
- Has the manufacturer announced when the remedy is expected to be available for this campaign?
- What is the dealer’s current estimate, and when will it check again?
- Can the dealer contact you when the status changes, and who is responsible for following up?
Ask whether the dealer is waiting for the manufacturer to make the remedy available, or whether the remedy is available but this location cannot yet perform it. These are different situations and may call for different next calls. If a dealer cannot provide a firm date, ask for the best current estimate and a specific date when it will check again; treat an estimate as an estimate, not a guaranteed appointment.
Ask for the answers in writing when possible, or make a note of the date, the person you spoke with, and what they said. Keep the recall notice, VIN, campaign number, dealer correspondence, and any promised return-contact date together. This recordkeeping is practical advice, not a special NHTSA filing requirement. It makes it easier to explain the delay if you need help from the manufacturer and to show what the dealer told you.

4. Contact the manufacturer if the delay or safety advice is unclear
The manufacturer is the right next contact when the dealer cannot explain the delay, has no useful estimate, or cannot answer your safety question. NHTSA’s recall notice guidance says the manufacturer’s letter should describe the hazard, how and when the remedy will be available, expected repair time, and whom to contact about problems obtaining it. See NHTSA’s recall guidance.
When you contact the automaker, provide your VIN, the campaign number if you have it, the dealer’s name, and the dealer’s explanation of what is unavailable. Ask the manufacturer to confirm the remedy’s status for your vehicle, explain any current estimate, and repeat the interim safety instructions that apply. If the notice lists a contact specifically for remedy problems, start there. You can also ask when and how the manufacturer will follow up if the answer is still that the repair is pending.
Delays can occur while a manufacturer identifies affected owners, develops repair instructions, trains dealers, distributes parts, and sends notices, according to NHTSA’s owner brochure. That explains why a recall announcement and an available repair are not always simultaneous; it does not provide a universal timeline for an individual campaign.

5. Distinguish a pending remedy from a refusal
A dealer that cannot perform a remedy because the manufacturer has not made the parts or instructions available is not necessarily refusing the repair. NHTSA’s general guidance recognizes that there can be a time lag before a remedy is ready and says a dealer is not required by law to remedy a vehicle before the remedy is available. The available federal guidance does not set one universal number of days for parts availability; ask the manufacturer for the schedule for your campaign.

NHTSA’s owner brochure, revised August 2017, advises owners to notify the manufacturer immediately if a dealer refuses to repair the vehicle in accordance with the recall letter. Contact the automaker and explain what the notice says, what the dealer said, and when it happened. A report of a delay should be precise: state whether the dealer says the remedy itself is still pending or has declined a repair that the notice says is available.
Do not use a schedule from another recall as a deadline for yours. NHTSA’s Takata materials describe particular parts and priority schedules for that program; they are not a general parts-delivery timetable. For your vehicle, rely on the campaign-specific notice and the manufacturer’s current status.
6. Escalate an unresolved safety concern
If the manufacturer does not resolve a safety concern, or you believe the dealer’s handling raises a safety issue, report the concern to NHTSA. Call the Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236 or use NHTSA’s online safety complaint process. Include the dealership and the people involved where relevant, as well as your vehicle and recall details. A report gives NHTSA information about the concern; it is not a substitute for following the manufacturer’s immediate safety instructions.
If the issue is a dealer refusing an available recall repair, notify the manufacturer immediately as NHTSA’s owner brochure advises; do not treat a complaint as a replacement for contacting the automaker. If the remedy is still pending, ask the manufacturer for status and safety guidance, and use NHTSA’s reporting channels for an unresolved safety concern. NHTSA can receive safety reports, but the status of an individual VIN and its remedy must be confirmed through the manufacturer and campaign information.

7. Ask about transportation, but do not assume it is included
NHTSA says recall repairs at the manufacturer’s dealership are free. The general guidance does not establish a universal entitlement to a loaner, alternate transportation, or reimbursement for other costs while you wait. Ask the manufacturer whether the specific campaign offers any transportation assistance and whether the dealer has options. If you need to stop driving because of a campaign warning, explain that when asking what assistance is available; do not assume a loaner or reimbursement will be provided.
Do not pay for an unrelated repair or buy a product as a substitute for the recall remedy without getting advice specific to the vehicle and defect. The recall remedy is handled through the manufacturer’s dealership, and buying a tool, part, or repair manual does not resolve an open recall.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a recall repair can be delayed
A safety recall can be announced before the repair process is ready for every vehicle. NHTSA describes several steps that may take time: identifying affected owners, developing a remedy, training dealers, distributing parts, and sending notices. The exact timing depends on the campaign; a parts delay or pending repair procedure does not by itself establish when your vehicle can be repaired.
NHTSA’s owner brochure says that when a manufacturer needs extended time to develop a remedy, the agency will require an interim notice so consumers know about the recall and any short-term actions that may reduce the likelihood of the defect occurring. That interim information is important while a permanent fix is being developed, but it is not the repair itself. Follow the instructions supplied for your campaign and seek clarification from the automaker if they do not answer your immediate question.

In its March 3, 2026 consumer alert, NHTSA reported 997 safety recalls affecting more than 29 million vehicles in 2025. It also reported more than 1.1 million pieces of vehicle equipment, nearly 745,000 car seats, and more than 145,000 tires recalled that year. Those figures show the scale of recall activity, not how long any particular vehicle must wait; individual remedy timing and precautions depend on the campaign.

What to have ready when you call
- Your VIN and recall campaign number.
- The manufacturer’s notice and any interim safety instructions.
- The dealer’s name, the date you contacted it, and its explanation of the delay.
- Your specific questions: what is unavailable, what safety precautions apply, and when you should expect an update.
- A note of the name or department you spoke with and any promised follow-up date.
A concise way to frame the call is: “I have an open recall for this VIN. The dealer told me [what is unavailable] on [date]. Is the remedy available for my vehicle, what safety instructions should I follow, and when should I check back?” This keeps the discussion focused on the individual campaign rather than a general parts-delay estimate.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if my recall repair parts are on backorder?
Ask the dealer to confirm whether the part is actually on backorder or whether repair instructions or dealer allocation are the issue. Request the current campaign-specific estimate and a date for the next update, then contact the manufacturer if the status or safety advice is unclear. Follow the notice’s interim instructions while waiting.
Can I still drive while waiting for a recall repair?
It depends on the recall and your manufacturer’s instructions. Follow any “do not drive” or “park outside” warning, and do not infer that a delay means the vehicle is safe. If your notice does not answer your situation, ask the manufacturer for guidance specific to your VIN and defect.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWho do I call if the dealer says there are no parts?
Ask the dealer what specifically is unavailable and when it will check again. Then contact the manufacturer using the contact in the recall notice, providing your VIN, campaign number, and dealer’s explanation. If a dealer refuses a remedy the notice says is available, notify the manufacturer immediately.
Is a dealer required to fix my car before recall parts are available?
NHTSA’s general guidance says a dealer is not required by law to perform a remedy before it is available. There is no universal federal parts-availability deadline in the reviewed guidance, so ask the manufacturer about the schedule for your specific campaign.
Will the manufacturer provide a loaner or pay for transportation?
NHTSA’s general guidance says recall repairs at the manufacturer’s dealership are free, but it does not establish a universal entitlement to a loaner, alternate transportation, or reimbursement while waiting. Ask the manufacturer whether your specific campaign provides assistance.
The Bottom Line
Confirm the open recall for your VIN, follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions, and get a clear written status and follow-up date from the dealer. If the remedy is unclear or delayed, contact the manufacturer; if a dealer refuses a remedy the notice says is available, notify the manufacturer immediately. There is no one timetable or transportation guarantee for every recall, so use campaign-specific information and report unresolved safety concerns to NHTSA.
