Compare what you can realistically get by selling or trading the car with its usefulness, the cost of taking ownership and driving it, and the tax consequences. A car prize can be taxable even if you keep it, and the rules for title, registration, and vehicle taxes depend on where and how the sponsor transfers it. There is no best choice for every winner; the right decision depends on the specific car, prize terms, location, and finances.
Start with the car’s real value and your total cost
Before deciding, gather the information that lets you compare keeping, selling, and trading the same vehicle on equal terms. A prize’s stated value is not automatically the amount you could receive in a sale, and a dealer’s trade-in figure is only one part of a replacement-car deal.

- Identify the vehicle and its condition. Check the make, model, year, mileage, equipment, condition, and any known damage or maintenance needs. A value estimate is only useful when it describes the actual car.
- Get written offers. Seek a dealer purchase or trade offer and compare them with a realistic private-sale estimate. The available evidence does not establish current market prices or validate a particular valuation tool, so use offers for the specific car rather than relying on an unsupported general figure.

It helps to separate the decision into two sets of numbers. First, estimate what you could actually receive from a sale or trade, using offers for the vehicle in its actual condition. Then list costs you would face to accept, title, register, insure, and operate it. These are different from the sponsor’s reported value and from the federal income-tax question. The documents and offers give you a record of what you were told and what options were available; they do not, by themselves, settle a tax valuation dispute.

Understand the federal tax issue before choosing
For U.S. federal income tax purposes, a noncash prize can count as income even if you keep the vehicle. The IRS’s Publication 525 (2025) states: “Prizes and awards in goods or services must be included in your income at their FMV.” In other words, the general rule is to include the fair market value of the prize in income; keeping rather than selling the car does not, by itself, avoid that issue.
The IRS publication also says: “If you refuse to accept a prize, don’t include its value in your income.” That distinction matters if you are still deciding whether to accept: declining the prize is different from accepting it and later selling or trading it. Check the contest’s official rules and ask the sponsor what choices and deadlines apply before making a decision. Do not assume that you can accept the vehicle, avoid the prize’s tax treatment, and then change your mind by selling it.
The available guidance establishes the general treatment of the prize, not your exact tax bill or the correct value in a disputed case. Nor does it settle the tax consequences of every later sale. If the sponsor’s reported value differs materially from the offers you can actually obtain, or if you are unsure how to report the prize or a later transaction, keep the relevant records and ask a tax professional about your circumstances.
In particular, do not treat a low offer as an automatic replacement for the sponsor’s reported prize value on a tax return. The cited IRS guidance says to include the prize at fair market value, but the materials here do not determine the correct valuation for an individual car or resolve a disagreement over it. Preserve the sponsor’s valuation, contest paperwork, and written offers so you can explain the facts to a tax professional if needed.
Check title and vehicle taxes where you will register it
Federal income tax and vehicle-transfer costs are separate questions. Title, registration, and motor vehicle tax requirements depend on the jurisdiction and on how the sponsor transfers the car. Read the contest rules and transfer documents, then contact the motor vehicle agency and tax authority in the place where you expect to title and register it.

Texas illustrates why location matters, but it is not a nationwide rule. The Texas Comptroller’s Motor Vehicle Tax Guide, marked 3/2026, says a Texas resident who wins a vehicle in another state and brings it into Texas owes Texas motor vehicle use tax. It also describes tax treatment for contest prize transfers, with details that differ depending on whether the sponsor is a licensed dealer and how title is assigned.
Do not assume the sponsor’s delivery of the car means it is ready to drive or that every transfer cost has been paid. Confirm who handles each step, what documents you will receive, and which charges remain yours before committing to accept the vehicle.

Texas’s rules show that the sponsor’s status and title assignment can matter there; other jurisdictions may handle matters differently. No single title, registration, or vehicle-tax process applies to every winner.
Compare keeping, selling, and trading
Use the same basic comparison for each option: money you can actually realize, costs you must cover, usefulness to you, and the work and uncertainty involved.

For a fair comparison, do not compare a trade allowance with a private-sale estimate as if both were cash in hand on identical terms. A trade-in is part of buying another vehicle, so look at the replacement vehicle’s price, fees, trade allowance, and any loan payoff together. A private sale may take more work, while a dealer transaction may be more convenient; the available information does not quantify that difference or guarantee which route will bring more.

Also consider transaction certainty and effort. If you do not want the car and have a written purchase offer, that may provide a clearer route than arranging a private sale, but it is not proof that the offer is the best available. If you are considering selling privately, factor in the time and effort involved rather than comparing only the top estimated amount. Keep tax and title questions in view whichever route you choose.

Keeping may be a good fit if the vehicle meets a real need and you can manage the costs of accepting, insuring, maintaining, and operating it. This is not a conclusion based on the prize being “free”: the car may still carry expenses before you can put it to use, and the prize may have a federal income-tax consequence.
Before accepting on the assumption that you will keep it, check insurance availability and cost, the remaining title and registration steps, and the car’s condition. If it does not fit your routine, household, or parking, its usefulness may not justify the ongoing expense.
Think about how the car fits your actual circumstances, not just whether you like the prize. Consider whether it suits your household’s driving needs and parking situation, and whether the costs of ownership fit your budget. If you would have to take on expenses that make the vehicle hard to use, keeping it may be less attractive than selling or trading it. These are personal trade-offs, not a guarantee that any one choice will save money.
When selling may be the better choice
Selling can make more sense when cash is more useful to you than the vehicle or when the costs and inconvenience of ownership outweigh its practical value. Compare a written purchase offer with a plausible private-sale amount for the same car and condition. A private sale may take more effort; a dealer offer may be simpler, but the amount offered is not guaranteed to match a private-sale estimate.

Do not treat a later sale as a substitute for sorting out the prize’s tax treatment. The IRS guidance addresses inclusion of the prize at fair market value; it does not determine the result of every later transaction. Retain the sponsor’s value documentation and sale records, and seek tax advice if the values or reporting questions are significant for you.
If you are asking whether you can sell the car immediately after winning it, the practical answer depends on whether and how the sponsor transfers title and on the requirements where you will register or transfer the vehicle. No universal waiting period or process applies. A trade-in may be convenient if you already want another vehicle, but do not judge the offer by its headline allowance alone. Compare the trade value, replacement vehicle’s price, all fees, and any loan payoff together. A seemingly strong trade figure does not establish that the complete deal is favorable.
The FTC’s Combating Auto Retail Scams rule addresses dealer misrepresentations about whether or when financing or a lease on a trade-in will be paid off. Ask for the trade allowance and any payoff treatment in writing, and review how those figures affect the complete transaction. The rule supports this specific consumer-protection point; it does not establish that a particular trade value is fair.
Ask the dealer to show the figures plainly rather than evaluating the allowance in isolation. Read the written terms for the trade and any payoff, then compare them with the price and fees for the vehicle you plan to buy. A dealer’s trade figure is not the same as a cash purchase offer, and there is no basis here to conclude that a trade is better or worse than selling independently.
