What the 2026 Iran Strikes Meant for U.S. Gas Prices—and Why the $3 Warning Is Now Dated

The March 2026 warning that Iran-related strikes could push U.S. gas above $3 per gallon was realized and overtaken. Here's what happened, why prices lag crude oil, and what could come next.

The $3 warning was a March 2026 forecast, not a current August price prediction. Analysts expected Iran-related military escalation to push the U.S. national average for regular gasoline above $3 per gallon within days or about a week. That happened, and prices later climbed to around $4 nationally.

The warning was real, but it is no longer a current forecast. In early March 2026, analysts said the U.S. national average for regular gasoline could rise above $3 per gallon within days or about a week after strikes involving Iran. The threshold was subsequently crossed—and later exceeded by a wide margin.

AAA reported a national average of $4.106 per gallon on July 31, 2026. The Energy Information Administration (EIA), using a different reporting schedule and methodology, put the July monthly average at approximately $3.895 per gallon. The original headline should therefore be read as a dated March 2026 forecast retrospective, not as a warning that gas is only now approaching $3.

What analysts warned in March

On March 1 and 2, Reuters and ABC News reported that GasBuddy analyst Patrick De Haan expected the U.S. average pump price to break above $3 per gallon. The national average was then around $2.94 per gallon, leaving only a small gap between the prevailing price and the forecast threshold.

The forecast concerned the U.S. national average retail price of regular gasoline. It did not mean that every gas station, state, or metropolitan area would immediately charge more than $3. Prices vary by state and region because of differences in taxes, fuel specifications, refinery access, transportation costs, inventories, and local competition.

Nor was the warning a claim that crude oil and gasoline prices would move together on the same day. The expected chain of events was:

  1. Military escalation increases concern about Middle Eastern oil production and shipping.
  2. Traders add a risk premium to crude-oil prices and petroleum products.
  3. Refiners pay more for crude or face tighter supplies of finished gasoline.
  4. Wholesale gasoline prices rise.
  5. Retail stations gradually adjust pump prices as their replacement fuel becomes more expensive.

What happened after the forecast

Date Price or event How to interpret it
March 1–2, 2026 Analysts said the national average could move above $3 within the following days or week. This was a forecast made while the national average was about $2.94.
March 30, 2026 EIA reported a U.S. average retail gasoline price of $3.99 per gallon. The $3 threshold had been exceeded nationally by this point.
July 2026 EIA’s monthly series showed an average near $3.895 per gallon. This is a standardized monthly government data point.
July 31, 2026 AAA reported a national regular-gasoline average of $4.106 per gallon. This was a more current daily-style consumer price reference.

AAA’s $4.106 figure and EIA’s approximately $3.895 July figure are not necessarily contradictory. They reflect different collection schedules and methodologies. AAA is useful for a current, consumer-facing snapshot, while EIA provides a standardized government series for historical and regional comparisons.

Why Iran-related strikes can raise U.S. gas prices

The risk was not limited to the physical loss of Iranian oil. A larger concern was whether military escalation would interrupt the movement of oil and refined products through the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow waterway connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the wider global shipping system.

During the first-quarter disruption, EIA reported that most shipping traffic stopped traversing the strait because of the risk of Iranian attacks on vessels. Several Middle Eastern producers also shut in production. Attacks on energy infrastructure and the possibility of additional attacks added to the market’s risk premium.

That matters to American drivers even when U.S. oil production and inventories provide some protection. Oil is traded in a global market. A disruption that reduces, delays, or threatens supply in one of the world’s major producing regions can raise the price paid by buyers elsewhere. Refiners may also compete more aggressively for available crude or finished gasoline, particularly when other countries increase purchases to replace disrupted supplies.

The Strait of Hormuz is the key risk variable

A temporary increase in geopolitical risk and a physical blockage are very different scenarios.

  • Risk premium only: Traders price in the possibility of disruption, but tankers continue moving and production remains available. Prices can rise quickly and then retreat if the threat fades.
  • Intermittent shipping disruption: Tankers are delayed, rerouted, or insured at much higher cost. Crude and product deliveries become less predictable, increasing regional price differences and volatility.
  • Sustained closure or severe attacks: Physical oil flows fall materially. Producers shut in output, refiners compete for limited supplies, and crude and gasoline prices can spike sharply.

EIA’s review of the second quarter found unusually large Brent crude-price swings as markets assessed the prospects for reopening the strait. The disruption also increased U.S. refinery margins and encouraged additional petroleum-product exports. That combination can tighten some gasoline markets even when U.S. crude inventories and domestic production offer partial protection.

Why gasoline prices usually lag crude oil

A crude-oil headline does not translate mechanically into an immediate pump-price change. Refineries need time to process crude into gasoline, wholesale prices must change, and stations sell fuel purchased at different times and prices.

A Kansas State University analysis of historical data estimated that gasoline prices rise about 2.4 cents per gallon for every $1-per-barrel increase in oil prices, with much of the comparable pump-price effect appearing during the following week. That is a historical relationship, not a guaranteed conversion rate.

The actual pass-through can be larger or smaller depending on:

  • refinery margins and outages;
  • gasoline inventories;
  • seasonal fuel formulations;
  • regional pipeline, terminal, and trucking constraints;
  • state and local fuel taxes;
  • the dollar’s value and global demand;
  • how long crude prices remain elevated; and
  • whether the disruption affects crude oil, finished gasoline, or both.

This lag explains how an analyst could warn that prices might rise above $3 “next week” without predicting that every station would increase its price by the same amount on the same day.

What could happen to gas prices after July 2026?

The next move depends primarily on whether the conflict continues to disrupt physical oil flows or merely maintains a temporary risk premium.

Reasons prices could rise again

  • A renewed or prolonged threat to tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
  • Additional attacks on oil infrastructure, ports, refineries, or storage facilities.
  • More production shut-ins by Middle Eastern exporters.
  • Lower-than-expected inventories or refinery outages.
  • Higher U.S. or global demand for refined products while supply remains constrained.

Reasons prices could ease

  • Reliable restoration of shipping through the strait.
  • Returning production and fewer emergency supply interruptions.
  • Improving crude and gasoline inventories.
  • Falling refinery margins and easing wholesale gasoline prices.
  • The end of the summer driving season, which can reduce seasonal fuel demand.

EIA’s July outlook assumed that traffic through the Strait of Hormuz would increase after a June 18 memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran. Under that scenario, EIA expected U.S. retail gasoline to average about $3.60 per gallon in the second half of 2026 and about $3.40 per gallon in the fourth quarter.

Those figures are scenario-based forecasts, not promises. A renewed escalation that again threatens shipping or production would invalidate the assumptions behind the lower-price outlook.

What the national average does—and does not—tell drivers

The national average is useful for measuring the direction of the market, but it is not a prediction of what a particular driver will pay. A state with lower taxes and nearby refineries may remain below the national average, while a region dependent on imported or transported fuel may move above it quickly.

Drivers should also distinguish among three different numbers:

  • Crude price: the cost of an underlying raw material, usually quoted per barrel.
  • Wholesale gasoline price: the price refiners, distributors, and retailers face before the final sale.
  • Retail pump price: the amount paid by the consumer, including refining, distribution, taxes, station costs, and margin.

When geopolitical news breaks, crude prices may be the fastest-moving indicator. Wholesale gasoline prices can follow, while the national retail average may take several days or longer to fully reflect the change.

How drivers can respond without overreacting

Short-term price volatility does not automatically justify panic-buying or storing large quantities of gasoline. Improperly stored fuel creates fire and health hazards, and buying more than needed can worsen local shortages.

More practical steps include:

  1. Compare nearby stations before filling up. Regional and station-level differences can exceed the daily national-average change.
  2. Combine errands and avoid unnecessary trips while prices are unusually high.
  3. Check the terms of any fuel-rewards program before assuming the advertised savings outweigh membership costs, restricted stations, or expiration rules.
  4. Track fuel spending separately if gasoline is putting pressure on a household or commuting budget.
  5. Use the correct tire pressure and keep up with maintenance. These measures will not eliminate a geopolitical price shock, but they can reduce avoidable fuel consumption.

Bottom line

The March 2026 analyst warning was accurate in its basic direction: Iran-related military escalation put upward pressure on oil and gasoline, and the U.S. national average moved above $3 per gallon soon afterward. But the wording “could go above $3 next week” is now dated. The latest researched readings were already around $4 per gallon nationally.

Future prices will depend less on the old threshold than on whether shipping through the Strait of Hormuz remains reliable, production returns, inventories rebuild, and the conflict avoids another escalation. EIA’s lower-price forecast assumes those improvements; it should not be treated as a guarantee.

Frequently Asked Questions

When did analysts warn that gas prices could rise above $3?

The original forecast was made on March 1–2, 2026, when the U.S. national average was around $2.94 per gallon. Analysts expected it to exceed $3 within days or about a week.

Does a $3 national average mean every gas station will charge more than $3?

No. The $3 figure described the U.S. national average for regular gasoline, not every station or state. Local prices can be higher or lower because of taxes, fuel specifications, refinery access, transportation, inventories, and competition.

How high did U.S. gas prices get after the warning?

AAA reported a national regular-gasoline average of $4.106 per gallon on July 31, 2026. EIA’s July monthly series showed approximately $3.895 per gallon; the difference reflects different reporting schedules and methodologies.

Could gas prices rise again?

A renewed threat to tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, additional attacks on energy infrastructure, production shut-ins, refinery outages, or weak inventories could push prices higher. Restored shipping, returning production, improving inventories, and lower seasonal demand could pull them down.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The $3-per-gallon warning referred to March 2026 and was later overtaken by higher prices. AAA reported $4.106 per gallon nationally on July 31, while EIA’s July monthly average was about $3.895. Another spike would depend chiefly on renewed disruption to Middle Eastern oil production or shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
