Google Maps can show an estimated toll price before you start driving when a selected route uses a supported toll road. It is useful for comparing toll and toll-free routes, but coverage is location-dependent and the estimate is not a guaranteed final charge.
Google Maps can show an estimated toll price before you start navigation when your selected route includes a supported toll road. The estimate helps you compare a faster toll route with a slower toll-free alternative, but it is not a universal real-time toll calculator and it is not a guaranteed final charge.

Availability depends on your location, route, device, and the toll data Google has available. Google says the estimate may also be based on toll-pass pricing by default, so check the toll operator’s current rates if the exact amount matters.

What Google Maps’ toll-price feature shows
When supported, Maps displays an estimated toll cost as part of the route information before navigation begins. This lets you weigh the trade-off between:

- an alternative route with a different toll amount or travel time.
Google introduced toll-price information in 2022 for Android and iPhone, initially covering nearly 2,000 toll roads in the United States, India, Japan, and Indonesia. The feature remains available, but Google’s current documentation does not promise worldwide coverage. It is more accurate to say that Maps shows toll estimates where supported, rather than claiming that it works on every toll road or in every country.
How Google estimates the toll
Google says its estimate can take several factors into account:
- the day of the week;
- the time of day;
- the specific date of travel;
- your payment method; and
- available toll-pass, tag-account, cash, or pay-by-mail rates.
Where toll-pass information is available, the Google Maps mobile apps generally default to showing the price associated with a toll pass. That means the displayed number may be lower than the cash or pay-by-mail amount a driver would actually pay.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor example, a route might show an estimate based on an electronic transponder rate even though you do not have that transponder. In that situation, the estimate is useful for comparing routes, but it should not be treated as your personal bill until you select the appropriate pricing assumption and verify the operator’s rate.
How to change toll-pass pricing in Google Maps
Android
- Open Google Maps.
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Choose Settings.
- Open Navigation settings.
- Find the Toll Price section.
- Turn off See toll pass prices if you want Maps to show non-pass pricing where that information is supported.
iPhone and iPad
- Open Google Maps.
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Choose Settings.
- Open Navigation.
- Find the Toll Price section.
- Turn off See toll pass prices to view non-pass pricing where available.
On iPhone and iPad, Google also says the option can be changed after requesting directions through the route-options menu. The exact appearance of the menu can vary with app updates and location.
How to see the toll estimate before driving
- Enter one destination in Google Maps.
- Tap Directions and select the car-driving mode.
- Review the suggested routes and their travel times.
- Look for a toll indication or estimated toll price on a route that uses a supported toll road.
- Compare the toll amount with the estimated time savings before starting navigation.
The current mobile help information describes toll-price estimates for routes with one destination. For a trip with several stops, do not assume that Maps will provide one complete toll total for the entire itinerary. Check each leg separately if toll spending is important.
How to avoid toll roads
Google Maps includes an Avoid tolls route preference. In the directions screen, open the route-options menu and select the option to avoid tolls, then review the resulting route before starting navigation.

Avoiding tolls may also produce a materially longer journey. Compare the extra driving time, fuel use, traffic, and road conditions with the toll amount rather than assuming the toll-free route is automatically the cheaper overall choice.
Important limitations of the estimate
It is not a guaranteed charge
Google labels the displayed amount as an estimate. The toll operator’s posted prices, road signs, account rules, and vehicle classifications determine the actual charge. Rates can differ because of:
- cash versus electronic payment;
- pay-by-mail fees;
- different transponder or tag accounts;
- vehicle type, axle count, trailer, or commercial classification;
- resident, commuter, or other qualifying discounts;
- peak and off-peak schedules; and
- recent operator price changes that Maps has not yet reflected.
Before relying on a number for a high-cost journey, check the relevant toll operator’s official rate table and confirm that your vehicle and payment method qualify for the assumed price.
Congestion-priced lanes are not fully calculated
Google says Maps does not calculate toll prices for congestion-based toll roads or lanes where the price changes according to traffic. This is especially important for express lanes and managed lanes, where the price can change while you are approaching or using the lane.
A route can therefore involve a toll even when Maps does not provide a reliable price. Do not interpret a missing estimate as proof that the route is free.
Coverage varies by location and road
The feature may be unavailable for a particular city, road, toll lane, route, or platform. Google’s current help pages do not provide a single universal list covering every supported location. If no toll price appears, possible explanations include limited local coverage, missing operator data, a toll type that Maps cannot calculate, or a route that contains variable pricing.
One route can contain several toll systems
Long-distance trips may cross multiple toll authorities, each with separate prices and payment rules. Even where Maps displays an estimate, verify whether the amount covers all relevant toll segments and whether your pass is accepted on each one.
What the feature means in 2026
Google’s March 2026 Maps announcement describes broader route-trade-off information, such as explaining that one route is faster while another is longer but avoids traffic or a toll. That newer experience is related to toll information but is not the same thing as a guaranteed toll calculator.

- Bright, high-resolution 5” glass capacitive touchscreen display lets you easily view your route
- Get more situational awareness with alerts for school zones, speed changes, sharp curves and more
- View food, fuel and rest areas along your active route, and see upcoming cities and milestones
- View Tripadvisor traveler ratings for top-rated restaurants, hotels and attractions to help you make the most of road trips
- Directory of U.S. national parks simplifies navigation to entrances, visitor centers and landmarks within the parks
The distinction is useful:
| Maps information | What it tells you | What it does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| Estimated toll price | An approximate toll cost for a supported route and pricing assumption | The final amount charged by the operator |
| Route trade-off information | Why an alternate route may be faster, less congested, or less expensive | That the displayed alternative is best for every driver |
| Avoid tolls | A preference for routes without toll roads where reasonable | That every toll segment or related charge will always be excluded |
Google Maps versus the Routes API
Google Maps’ consumer app should not be confused with Google’s Routes API, which developers can use to request toll information for supported locations.
The Routes API can calculate toll information when the developer supplies vehicle details and relevant toll-pass information. If a toll exists but Google cannot determine its fee, the API may indicate that a toll is present while leaving the price unknown.
The pricing assumptions also differ:
- Routes API: returns pricing based on the passes or payment assumptions supplied by the developer. If no passes are specified, Google says the API returns cash prices, which are usually the highest toll.
- Google Maps app: typically shows the cheapest possible price for the vehicle when toll-pass pricing is available, with an option to turn off See toll pass prices and view non-pass pricing.
As a result, a Routes API result and the price shown in the consumer Google Maps app are not necessarily identical. Developers should configure the API for the actual vehicle and payment method they want to model instead of using the consumer-app estimate as a universal reference.
A practical way to use the feature
- Set the correct destination. For a multi-stop trip, evaluate each driving leg separately.
- Check the pricing assumption. Determine whether Maps is showing a toll-pass rate or a non-pass estimate.
- Compare route time and cost. Include likely fuel consumption and the value of the time saved.
- Look for variable-price lanes. Treat a missing or vague amount as a warning, not as a zero-dollar estimate.
- Confirm the operator’s current rate. Use the official toll authority’s information for unusual vehicles, multiple toll systems, discounts, or expensive trips.
- Review the route after enabling Avoid tolls. Make sure the alternative does not create an unreasonable detour or unexpected charging segment.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. The route may use an unsupported toll road, a toll lane with missing data, or congestion-based pricing that Maps does not calculate. Check the route details and the toll operator’s official information.
Google Maps shows no toll price. Does that mean the route is free?
No. Google describes the figure as an estimate. The final charge can vary by payment method, toll pass, vehicle class, discounts, schedule, and operator price changes.
Does Google Maps show the exact amount I will pay?
Google Maps generally defaults to toll-pass pricing when that information is available. In the Toll Price settings, turn off See toll pass prices to view non-pass pricing where supported.
Why is the toll estimate lower than the cash price?
The current mobile documentation describes the feature for routes with one destination. Check individual legs instead of assuming Maps will show one complete toll total for a multi-stop itinerary.
Can Google Maps calculate tolls for a trip with several stops?
Not necessarily. The Routes API uses the vehicle and toll-pass assumptions supplied by the developer and returns cash pricing when no passes are specified, while Maps typically shows the cheapest available pass-based price when supported.
Do Google Maps and the Routes API return the same toll amount?
