The original Skyline GT-R is considered a classic because it combined a familiar, understated family-car body with racing purpose, prototype-derived engine technology and an exceptional documented touring-car record. The first-generation car appeared as the four-door PGC10 in 1969, became a two-door hardtop in autumn 1970, and Nissan says its works team had reached 52 victories before withdrawing in October 1972. Those facts explain the car’s lasting historical importance without relying on modern price or rarity claims.
Which car is the original Skyline GT-R?
“Original Skyline GT-R” refers to the first-generation 1969–1972 model, not the later R32, R33, R34 or modern GT-R generations. Nissan’s historical material identifies the first production version as the Skyline 2000GT-R, built after Nissan’s merger with Prince Motors. It was developed as a road-going car for touring-car competition rather than as a separate, purpose-built racing prototype.

The first form was the PGC10, a four-door Skyline sedan introduced in 1969. In autumn 1970 Nissan changed the body to a two-door hardtop. Both belong to the first-generation GT-R story, but they represent two stages of the same program: the sedan established the car’s identity, while the hardtop carried that competition-focused formula forward.

Nissan’s Heritage Collection describes the GT-R as a high-performance Skyline made for touring-car racing. Its significance therefore comes from the relationship between an ordinary-looking production body and serious competition engineering. The car did not need an exotic silhouette to be important; its road-car appearance made the racing success more striking.

Why the GT-R’s purpose matters
A road car built around touring-car competition
The PGC10 was not merely a sporty trim applied after the fact. Nissan says it was produced for touring-car racing, which gave the model a clear engineering purpose from the beginning. That purpose shaped the engine, the specification and the way the car was presented: recognizable as a Skyline, but intended to win against other production-based cars on a circuit.
This combination is central to the classic argument. A car can become historically important through styling, luxury, performance or rarity. The first Skyline GT-R has a different kind of appeal: it shows a manufacturer turning a production sedan into a credible competition weapon while preserving the visual identity of the family model on which it was based.
The understated body became part of the legend
The four-door sedan made the GT-R look less like a specialized racing machine than its engineering suggested. When the two-door hardtop arrived in autumn 1970, Nissan says it intensified the GT-R’s racing momentum, but the essential idea remained the same: a production Skyline with competition intent. That contrast between restraint and capability is why the first-generation car remains easy to recognize as a classic even when its specifications are read without modern performance comparisons.
How the S20 engine connects the road car to the R380
Prototype technology adapted for production
The technical centerpiece was Nissan’s S20 engine. It is a 1,989 cc inline-six with four valves per cylinder and double overhead camshafts. Nissan says the design was re-engineered from engine technology developed for the R380 prototype racer so it could be used in a production model. That connection gives the GT-R a documented motorsport lineage rather than a purely marketing-based performance story.
The important point is not that the road car used an unchanged prototype engine; Nissan describes an adaptation for production. The S20 brought the architecture and high-performance thinking of the R380 program into a street-legal Skyline. In historical terms, that makes the GT-R a bridge between Nissan’s prototype racing work and its showroom cars.

What the production PGC10 actually produced
Nissan lists the 1969 PGC10 at 118 kW (160 PS) at 7,000 rpm and 177 Nm (18.0 kgm) at 5,600 rpm. Those are the manufacturer’s figures for the documented production sedan. They should not be presented as specifications for every race-prepared car, engine rebuild or surviving example, because competition cars and modified cars can differ substantially from the road specification.
The engine’s high-revving four-valve, double-overhead-cam layout also helps explain why the car’s reputation is about engineering as much as results. Nissan did not simply add cosmetic cues to a standard Skyline; it installed a production engine derived from a prototype-racing program and matched it to a chassis intended for circuit use.

First victory: May 3, 1969
Nissan’s official historical account dates the first race win to May 3, 1969, in the TS-b class at the JAF Grand Prix at Fuji Speedway. That early result established the car’s competition credibility soon after the GT-R’s 1969 introduction.
The 50-win milestone: March 20, 1972
Nissan’s Heritage Collection records the 50th victory on March 20, 1972, at the Fuji 300 km Speed Race. This is a specific milestone, not the final tally. When discussing that event, the accurate figure is 50 wins by that date.
The later total: 52 victories by October 1972
Nissan’s PGC10 history page says the car kept winning until it reached 52 victories before the Nissan works team withdrew in October 1972. Thus, “50 wins” describes the March milestone, while “52 victories” describes the later total reported before withdrawal. They are sequential figures, not competing claims that should be averaged or merged.

Nissan summarizes the reputation created by that run with the phrase, “Skyline’s only rival is Skyline.” The Heritage Collection presents this as a saying that arose around the car’s success, not as a quotation attributed to a named driver or engineer. It captures how repeated wins turned the GT-R from a new competition model into a reference point for the Skyline name.
The 52-victory figure is Nissan’s own historical account. It is strong primary-source evidence for how the manufacturer records the program, but it is not described as an independently audited race database. That distinction matters when using the number: it supports the GT-R’s documented place in Nissan’s history without claiming that every detail of the period’s results has been independently rechecked here.
Production PGC10 specifications
The following figures are Nissan Heritage Collection specifications for the 1969 PGC10 production entry. They describe the documented road car, not every racing variant or modified survivor.
| Specification | PGC10 production figure |
|---|---|
| Engine | S20 inline-six; four-valve DOHC |
| Displacement | 1,989 cc |
| Maximum power | 118 kW (160 PS) at 7,000 rpm |
| Maximum torque | 177 Nm (18.0 kgm) at 5,600 rpm |
| Curb weight | 1,120 kg |
| Front suspension | Independent strut |
| Rear suspension | Independent semi-trailing arm |
| Front brakes | Disc |
| Rear brakes | Drum |
The specification is historically interesting because it combines a relatively light 1,120 kg curb weight with a sophisticated-for-its-era four-valve DOHC inline-six and independent suspension at both ends. The braking arrangement—discs at the front and drums at the rear—also places the car firmly in its period. Reading the figures in their 1969 context is more meaningful than judging them by current sports-car standards.
Four-door sedan or two-door hardtop?
The PGC10 sedan
The four-door PGC10 is the first-generation GT-R in its original 1969 form. It established the model’s visual understatement and provided the production basis for Nissan’s touring-car project. When people use “original GT-R” to mean the earliest car, this is the body style they are often describing.

The hardtop introduced in autumn 1970
Nissan added a two-door hardtop in autumn 1970. The change did not create a separate generation; it was a body-style development within the first-generation 1969–1972 program. Nissan’s historical account associates the hardtop with intensified racing momentum, but the available material does not establish that one body style is universally more valuable, rarer or more desirable than the other.
The useful distinction is therefore chronological and structural: the sedan came first, and the hardtop followed. Both are part of the original Skyline GT-R story, and both should be identified by body style when discussing a specific car.

1. A clear historical identity
The GT-R was created with a defined touring-car mission. That gives the model a coherent identity that extends from its engine and chassis to its competition use. It is easier to understand why the car matters when every major element points toward the same purpose.
2. A rare production-to-prototype connection
The S20’s documented relationship to the R380 prototype engine gives the road car technical substance. The GT-R was not famous only because it looked aggressive or because later generations became icons. Its first-generation engine carried engineering ideas from a Nissan racing prototype into a production Skyline.

3. Results that are unusually easy to connect to the product
The race record is not an isolated sponsorship story. Nissan’s own timeline links the production model to a first win in May 1969, a 50th victory in March 1972 and 52 victories before the works team withdrew in October 1972. That sequence makes the car’s reputation understandable: the competition purpose was followed by sustained, documented success.

4. The tension between ordinary appearance and serious capability
The Skyline body kept the car recognizable as a road-going sedan or hardtop, while the S20 and racing program gave it an unusually focused mechanical identity. That tension is a durable source of appeal. The GT-R does not need modern acceleration figures or contemporary electronics to make its point; its significance is rooted in what Nissan attempted and achieved in its own period.
What the available evidence does not establish
Nissan’s Heritage Collection is a primary source for the company’s specifications and historical account, but it does not by itself establish current collector values, total production numbers, restoration costs, present-day parts availability or the market ranking of sedan versus hardtop examples. Those subjects require separate, current evidence and should not be inferred from the race record.
Nor should the listed 160 PS, 177 Nm and 1,120 kg be treated as a guarantee for every surviving car. A restored, altered or race-prepared GT-R may not match the original production specification. The figures are most useful when identified explicitly as Nissan’s 1969 PGC10 road-car data.

The verdict
The original Nissan Skyline GT-R is a classic because three elements reinforce one another: a production Skyline body built for touring-car competition, an S20 engine re-engineered from R380 prototype technology, and a competition record Nissan says reached 52 victories before the works team withdrew in 1972. The sedan’s understated form, the later hardtop and the precisely documented milestones give the car a distinct historical character. Its classic status rests on that combination of purpose, engineering and results—not on an unverified claim about today’s price or rarity.
