Track Mode is a vehicle-specific drive setting that adjusts selected powertrain, handling and control systems for closed-course performance driving. It is not a universal package: what changes—and which driver aids remain available—depends on the car’s make, model, year, trim and equipment.
What Track Mode changes
Depending on the vehicle, Track Mode can alter accelerator response, transmission behavior, steering, suspension, traction and stability intervention, braking, cooling, exhaust settings or engine sound. It coordinates calibrations rather than simply making the engine more powerful or switching every electronic aid off.
Manufacturers use the name differently. Chevrolet’s driver-mode guide says Track Mode adjusts accelerator response to help provide control and handling on closed tracks; it also notes that available modes and how to activate them vary by vehicle.
How it differs by car
Tesla Model 3 Performance
Tesla’s Model 3 Owner’s Manual says Track Mode is available only on Performance Model 3 vehicles. It modifies stability control, traction control, regenerative braking and cooling for closed-circuit performance. Tesla describes using the motors, regenerative braking and conventional brakes to improve cornering, and increasing cooling for aggressive sessions.

Drivers can adjust handling balance, stability assist, powertrain endurance and regenerative braking. Tesla says the mode is calibrated for a Performance Model 3 with performance brakes and tires; a car without those components may have comparatively lower performance and endurance. Those details apply to this Tesla configuration, not every car with a Track Mode.
2024 Ford Mustang
In the 2024 Mustang Owner’s Manual for the U.S. market, Track Mode increases throttle response, keeps the transmission in lower gears longer, reduces traction and stability-control intervention, and moves steering, suspension and exhaust to sport settings. In that Mustang, Automatic Emergency Braking and Brake Over Accelerator are disabled in Track Mode.

2021 Chevrolet Corvette
The 2021 Chevrolet Corvette Owner’s Manual describes a broader set of model-specific changes: transmission and steering settings, accelerator response, real-time damping, exhaust-valve tuning, engine sound, brake-pedal feel, and electronic stability control (ESC) and traction-control performance. These are Corvette details, not a promise about other Chevrolet models.
Where to use it—and what to check first
Track Mode is intended for a closed course, not as a public-road performance shortcut. Tesla’s Model 3 manual says, “Track Mode is designed for use on closed circuit driving courses only. It is the driver’s responsibility to drive safely and ensure others are not endangered,” and separately warns, “Do not use on public roads.” Ford’s 2024 Mustang manual similarly says, “This mode is for track use only and is not intended for public roads.” Follow the instructions for your exact vehicle.

Tesla says its mode is designed for experienced track drivers familiar with the course. Driver-assistance features are unavailable while it is on, and traction and stability behavior differs. Tesla provides adjustable stability-assist levels; less intervention can mean the car may not stabilize itself. Ford’s description is of reduced intervention, not necessarily a complete shutdown. Never assume that Track Mode disables all aids—or that any particular aid remains active—without checking your manual.
- Read the owner’s manual for your model year, trim and equipment, including which safety features change or become unavailable.
- Understand the track layout and the mode’s settings before driving; use instruction if you are unfamiliar with track driving.
- Set the car up for the intended session and conditions. For the Model 3 Performance, Tesla specifically identifies performance brakes and tires as part of the calibration context.
Does Track Mode require a USB drive?
No. A USB drive is optional for one Tesla Model 3 recording workflow, not a general requirement for Track Mode. With “Save Dashcam for Laps” enabled and a properly formatted drive inserted, the car can save session video and an associated CSV file containing vehicle-position, speed, acceleration and accelerator-use telemetry.

Tesla also notes that some vehicles built after approximately November 1, 2021 may have center-console USB ports that support charging only; for other functions, the manual directs owners to the glove-box USB port. Check the manual for your specific car’s port location, compatibility and formatting requirements.
