That is the maximum for a suitably equipped configuration—not the rating of every 2018 F-150. Your truck’s engine, axle ratio, cab, wheelbase, drivetrain and tow equipment determine its specific rating.
What does the 13,200-pound maximum mean?
Ford announced 13,200 pounds as the 2018 F-150 lineup’s maximum conventional towing figure for trucks equipped with the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6. Ford’s model-year guide identifies its conventional ratings as maximum loaded trailer weight and says a weight-distributing hitch is required for those maximum ratings. The figure is not a blanket capacity for all trucks bearing the 2018 F-150 name.
Ford also said the 2018 F-150 could reach a maximum payload of 3,270 pounds with the 5.0-liter V8. Payload and towing are different limits, and the two lineup maximums do not describe one truck configuration. Ford’s 2018 F-150 announcement presents them as separate maxima.
Why does the rating vary by truck?
Ford’s guide organizes towing ratings by engine, axle ratio, cab style, wheelbase and 4×2 or 4×4 drivetrain. A rating only applies when the truck’s configuration matches the relevant guide entry. The headline maximum cannot identify the capacity of a particular used truck without those details.

The guide also separates conventional towing from fifth-wheel towing. It specifies that the conventional maximum loaded trailer-weight ratings require a weight-distributing hitch. For fifth-wheel towing, it requires Trailer Tow Package 53A or Max Trailer Tow Package 53C. The guide says not to exceed 5,100 pounds when towing with the bumper only.
How to find your 2018 F-150’s specific capacity
- Identify the truck’s configuration. Confirm its engine, axle ratio, cab, wheelbase, drivetrain and installed tow package. Use the vehicle identification number (VIN) to distinguish your truck from a similar-looking F-150.
- Check Ford’s VIN-based Towing Calculator or the applicable RV & Trailer Towing Guide. Ford directs owners to these resources for towing-capacity information. Ford towing guides and calculator
- Verify the truck’s vehicle limits. Check the Safety Compliance Certification Label and owner’s manual for the ratings that apply to your truck, including GVWR and rear GAWR. Ford’s guidance explains that guide figures do not account for added accessories, premium trim packages, aftermarket equipment, passengers or payload. Ford towing and trailer guidance
Ford’s 2018 guide contains configuration-specific conventional and fifth-wheel tables, but its individual table values are not reproduced here. Use the actual guide or VIN-specific lookup rather than estimating a rating from the 13,200-pound maximum.

Check payload and weight limits before towing
A trailer’s weight is only one part of a safe, within-rating combination. Payload is the allowable combined load of passengers and cargo in the truck. Trailer tongue weight for conventional towing—or king-pin load for fifth-wheel towing—also uses payload. Ford’s guide says fifth-wheel king-pin load should be 15% of the total loaded trailer weight, and warns that this load, passengers and cargo must fit within the truck’s payload and remain within GVWR and rear GAWR.
Ford distinguishes trailer towing capacity from GVWR, the maximum permitted weight of the loaded truck, and GCWR, the maximum combined weight of the loaded truck and loaded trailer. Meeting the trailer-weight figure alone does not prove that the truck is within its payload, axle or combined-weight limits. Weigh the loaded setup and compare each relevant weight with the ratings for your vehicle and trailer.

What hitch do you need?
For a conventional trailer, Ford requires a weight-distributing hitch to reach the maximum loaded trailer-weight ratings in its guide. The hitch must be compatible with the truck and trailer and rated for the loads involved; an aftermarket hitch does not raise the F-150’s certified capacity. Ford’s guide sets a separate 5,100-pound limit for bumper-only towing.
For a fifth-wheel trailer, Ford specifies Trailer Tow Package 53A or Max Trailer Tow Package 53C. Confirm that the specific truck has the required package and that its payload, GVWR and rear GAWR can accommodate the trailer’s king-pin load along with occupants and cargo.

What the maximum does—and does not—tell you
The 13,200-pound figure answers how much Ford said a properly configured 2018 F-150 could tow at the top of the range. It does not tell you the rating of an individual truck, whether its payload can handle a particular hitch load, or whether the entire combination stays within GVWR, rear GAWR and GCWR. For those answers, use the matching configuration data and verify the loaded vehicle against its labels and Ford’s VIN-specific information.
