TOP TIER™ gasoline is a fuel-cleanliness standard created by automakers. It requires participating retailers to use an approved detergent package at a specified concentration and restricts certain organometallic additives that can damage emissions equipment.
It is not a gasoline brand, octane rating, or government certification. A station can sell TOP TIER regular, midgrade, and premium fuel. You still need to use the octane grade specified in your owner’s manual.
What does TOP TIER gas mean?
Every gasoline sold in the United States must meet the EPA’s minimum deposit-control requirements. That minimum is often called LAC, or Lowest Allowable Concentration.
TOP TIER raises the detergent and deposit-control requirements above the EPA minimum. The goal is to reduce deposits on fuel injectors, intake valves, and other parts of the fuel and combustion system. The standard also prohibits certain metal-containing additives associated with emissions-system damage.

The program is voluntary. Retailers pay to license the standard and must apply it to all gasoline octane grades sold at their enrolled retail outlets.
TOP TIER versus ordinary EPA-compliant gasoline
Non-TOP-TIER fuel is not automatically unsafe or illegal. It meets the applicable federal requirements. The difference is that TOP TIER fuel has to meet a more demanding detergent and deposit-control specification.
AAA tested the effect in a simulated 4,000-mile driving cycle. Its testing found an average of 660 milligrams of deposits per intake valve with non-TOP-TIER gasoline, compared with 34 milligrams with TOP TIER fuel. That is approximately 19 times more deposits in the non-TOP-TIER test fuel.
AAA also found that TOP TIER gasoline cost about three cents more per gallon on average in its 12-month price analysis. Actual prices vary by location, retailer, fuel grade, and market conditions.

Does TOP TIER gas give you more power?
Not by definition. TOP TIER describes detergency and deposit control, not energy content, octane, or horsepower. A clean fuel system may help an engine continue operating as designed, but filling up with TOP TIER fuel does not turn regular gasoline into premium or create a guaranteed power increase.
Octane and TOP TIER status are separate choices:
- Octane indicates resistance to engine knock.
- TOP TIER indicates compliance with a higher fuel-performance and deposit-control standard.
Use the octane grade printed on the fuel door or specified in the owner’s manual. Choosing premium when the engine only requires regular does not make the gasoline more TOP TIER, and choosing the wrong octane can cause problems regardless of the detergent package.
Which gasoline brands are TOP TIER approved?
The official brand list changes, and approval can vary by country. As of August 9, 2026, the U.S. list includes the following brands and retailers:

That list includes national chains, warehouse-club fuel, convenience-store brands, regional retailers, independent locations, and tribal retailers. Costco is approved, but it is not the only TOP TIER retailer.

Because brands can enter or leave the program, use the official TOP TIER gasoline brand list before treating a retailer as approved. The page separates U.S. entries from brands in Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and other countries. Approval in one country does not automatically establish approval at every station carrying the same brand worldwide.
How to check whether a station sells TOP TIER gasoline
- Look at the pump. Search for the official TOP TIER gasoline seal on or around the pump. Newer locations may display the TOP TIER+ seal instead.
- Check the official brand list. Confirm that the retailer is listed for the country where you are buying fuel.
- Search the Station Finder. Use the official TOP TIER Station Finder to search by location. The mobile app adds location-based searches and filters for brand and fuel type.
- Verify the fuel type. A TOP TIER Diesel decal does not prove that the station’s gasoline is TOP TIER. Gasoline and diesel participation are separate.
There is one useful detail when the physical decal is missing: the official brand page says the standard applies to all gasoline octane grades at licensed retail outlets. If the brand and location are listed but the pump has no decal, do not immediately assume the fuel is unapproved. TOP TIER advises contacting the program for clarification.
What is TOP TIER+ gasoline?
In 2026, TOP TIER began rolling out TOP TIER+ gasoline, an evolution of the base standard aimed particularly at newer, high-efficiency gasoline direct-injection engines.
TOP TIER+ retains the base standard’s deposit-control requirements and adds three engine tests covering:
- Fuel-injector cleanliness
- Emissions performance
- Combustion behavior
TOP TIER+ is not a new octane grade. It is a newer performance standard, identified by a different seal.

On May 26, 2026, TOP TIER announced that bp, Amoco, and Costco had announced TOP TIER+ status among national brands. Other retailers were still converting, and TOP TIER expected most or all approved gasoline brands to transition by January 2027. Check the seal or the current program information rather than assuming that every TOP TIER brand has already upgraded to Plus.

It does not mean premium
Premium refers to octane. TOP TIER refers to detergent and fuel-performance requirements. A station can sell TOP TIER regular fuel, and premium fuel is not automatically TOP TIER.
It does not mean every station from the same brand is identical
Confirm the applicable location and country. Fuel distribution can involve different formulations, suppliers, and additive packages. A delivery truck serving several stations does not prove that every compartment contains identical fuel.
It does not make aftermarket additives unnecessary—or turn other fuel into TOP TIER
Pouring a bottle of fuel-system cleaner into ordinary gasoline does not make that gasoline TOP TIER. The program requires a specified approved additive package and testing; simply using a large amount of detergent is not enough. Most automakers also do not generally recommend fuel additives unless the owner’s manual calls for them.

It does not cure contaminated fuel
TOP TIER addresses deposit control and specified fuel-performance requirements. It does not prevent every fuel problem. Water in the tank, contamination, poor storage, incorrect octane, a failing fuel pump, bad injectors, ignition faults, and other mechanical problems require separate diagnosis.
Should you buy TOP TIER gasoline?
For most gasoline vehicles, TOP TIER is a sensible preference when the price difference is small and an approved station is convenient. The standard is designed to limit deposits over time, and AAA’s testing found a substantial deposit difference after its simulated driving cycle.
It is not necessary to pay for premium just to get TOP TIER fuel. Choose an approved retailer’s regular grade if regular is what your vehicle requires. If you already have drivability symptoms, switching fuel may be a reasonable maintenance step, but persistent symptoms should be investigated rather than blamed on gasoline alone.

Is TOP TIER gas worth the extra money?
It can be a reasonable choice, particularly when the price difference is only a few cents per gallon. TOP TIER uses a higher deposit-control standard than the EPA minimum, and AAA testing found substantially fewer intake-valve deposits with TOP TIER fuel. It is not a guarantee against every fuel or mechanical problem.

No. Premium describes octane, while TOP TIER describes detergent and deposit-control performance. Premium fuel can be non-TOP-TIER, and TOP TIER fuel can be regular, midgrade, or premium.
Is Costco the only TOP TIER gas station?
No. Costco is on the official list, along with national brands such as Chevron, Shell, Exxon, Mobil, BP, Amoco, Sunoco, and many regional, independent, convenience-store, warehouse-club, and tribal retailers. Check the live official brand list or Station Finder because approval lists can change.
Does TOP TIER gasoline clean a dirty engine or fix bad fuel?
Not necessarily. TOP TIER fuel is intended to help control deposits over time; it is not a guaranteed cleaning treatment for an already-damaged fuel system. It also does not fix water contamination, bad fuel, incorrect octane, failed injectors, or other mechanical faults.
The Bottom Line
TOP TIER gasoline is a higher deposit-control standard, not a fuel brand or premium-octane label. Look for the official seal, confirm the retailer in the current brand list or Station Finder, and then select the octane your vehicle requires. TOP TIER+ is the newer 2026 standard, but its availability is still changing.
