A compact hybrid may be the smarter choice for a two-child household, while a full-size SUV makes sense when you regularly carry seven or eight people, tow, or need substantial cargo space behind the third row.
This list combines current recommendations from Kelley Blue Book, Car and Driver, MotorTrend, Edmunds, and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). It covers SUVs only; Kelley Blue Book’s broader 2026 family-vehicle list also includes minivans. Rankings below are organized by the job each SUV does best, rather than presented as one universal score.

Best two-row family SUVs
1. 2026 Honda CR-V Hybrid: best all-around compact family SUV
The CR-V Hybrid is the easiest recommendation for a family that does not need a third row. It combines a roomy cabin, straightforward controls, useful cargo capacity, and the fuel savings expected from a hybrid powertrain without requiring the owner to change charging habits.
Car and Driver ranks the 2026 CR-V Hybrid second among its family SUVs, gives it a 10/10 rating, and lists EPA fuel economy of 35–40 mpg combined. Kelley Blue Book also includes the 2026 CR-V among its best two-row family vehicles. It is a particularly strong fit for school runs, commuting, road trips, and families that want a comfortable daily driver rather than a truck-based SUV.

2. 2026 Toyota RAV4: best practical hybrid compact SUV
The RAV4 remains one of the most practical compact SUV formats: easy to park, large enough for family gear, and available with an efficiency-focused powertrain. Kelley Blue Book names the 2026 RAV4 one of its three best two-row family SUVs.
The important detail is that the 2026 RAV4 is a current-generation redesign. Buyers and writers should not assume that 2025 pricing, cargo measurements, powertrain availability, or crash-test results apply unchanged. Confirm those details for the specific 2026 vehicle before comparing it with the CR-V.
3. 2026 Kia Sportage Hybrid: best value-oriented hybrid compact SUV
The Sportage Hybrid makes a strong case when interior space, equipment, and fuel economy matter more than badge prestige. MotorTrend ranks it first in its Best Compact Hybrid SUVs category and gives it a 9.5/10 rating. Its listed maximum EPA estimates are 41 mpg city and 44 mpg highway.
There is a build-date condition attached to its safety accolade: IIHS lists the 2026 Sportage as a Top Safety Pick+ only for vehicles built after May 2025. A buyer should check the vehicle identification number, build date, and applicable IIHS listing rather than relying on a general advertisement for the model.

4. 2026 Honda Passport: best two-row SUV for active families
The Passport is the choice for families that want more space and capability than a compact crossover but do not need occasional third-row seats. Its revised all-wheel-drive system and adventure-oriented design suit camping equipment, bikes, winter travel, and rougher access roads better than a typical small hybrid SUV.
Car and Driver ranks the 2026 Passport third among family SUVs and gives it a 10/10 rating. It lists a $46,445 starting price and 20–21 mpg combined. That fuel economy is considerably lower than the hybrid compact SUVs above, but the tradeoff is a larger, more rugged two-row package. The 2026 Passport is also an IIHS Top Safety Pick+.

5. 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 5: best affordable electric family SUV
The Ioniq 5 is a useful family EV because its roomy interior and quick-charging capability address two common objections to electric vehicles: limited cabin space and slow road-trip charging. Kelley Blue Book includes it among its best two-row family vehicles, while Car and Driver gives it a 9.5/10 rating.
Car and Driver lists an EPA-estimated range of 245–318 miles, depending on configuration. Actual range varies with weather, speed, wheel choice, and heating or air-conditioning use. It is best suited to households with convenient home or workplace charging, although its fast-charging capability makes longer trips more manageable.
6. 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 9: best electric three-row SUV
Families that want three rows without switching to gasoline can look at the Ioniq 9. MotorTrend ranks it first in its Best Electric 3-Row SUVs category and gives it a 9.5/10 rating. The listed starting price is $60,605.
The Ioniq 9 is an IIHS Top Safety Pick+. Its appeal is strongest for buyers who can charge at home and need a genuinely family-sized EV rather than a compact electric crossover. Before buying, check the usable cargo area with all three rows occupied and test the third row with the child seats or boosters your family actually uses.
Best three-row family SUVs
7. 2026 Hyundai Palisade Hybrid: best hybrid three-row SUV
The redesigned Palisade gains a hybrid option for 2026, making it one of the most interesting choices for families that need three rows but want better fuel economy than a conventional large SUV. Car and Driver ranks the Palisade Hybrid first among its family SUVs, gives it a 10/10 rating, and lists a $45,760 starting price with EPA fuel economy of 29–31 mpg combined.
Safety reporting needs special care here. Edmunds reported in May 2026 that the recently updated Palisade did not yet have complete NHTSA and IIHS ratings. Do not describe the 2026 Palisade Hybrid as an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ unless a later, model-specific IIHS result confirms it. The 2025 Palisade and 2026 Palisade are not interchangeable for crash-test claims.
Rank #3
8. 2026 Kia Telluride: best established three-row value
The Telluride remains a strong value choice for families that want a polished three-row interior, comfortable road manners, and a long list of practical features without moving to a full-size Tahoe or Expedition. Edmunds identifies it as its top-value safe family SUV.
Edmunds says the 2025 Telluride earned a five-star overall NHTSA rating and an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award. It also notes that the 2025 Telluride performed slightly better than the recently updated Palisade in IIHS’s updated rear-passenger safety evaluation. Those are 2025 claims, however; do not automatically apply them to an untested or differently rated 2026 model.
9. 2026 Toyota Grand Highlander: best for usable third-row space
The Grand Highlander addresses a common three-row SUV problem: having a third row that exists on paper but leaves little room for people or luggage. Kelley Blue Book includes it among its best three-row family vehicles, and its larger body provides a more useful rear seat and cargo area than the regular Highlander.
That distinction matters if older children or adults will regularly use row three. Edmunds describes the regular Highlander’s third row as small and its cargo space as limited. The Grand Highlander is therefore the better Toyota choice for families who will use all three rows often, even if the regular Highlander is easier to fit into a garage.
10. 2026 Honda Pilot: best balanced mainstream three-row SUV
The Pilot is a sensible middle ground: larger and more flexible than a two-row crossover, but less imposing than a full-size SUV. Kelley Blue Book names the 2026 Pilot one of its best three-row family vehicles. Its appeal comes from an easy-to-live-with size, family-friendly seating layout, and broad everyday usability.
Its safety distinction should be stated accurately. The 2025–2026 Pilot has an IIHS Top Safety Pick designation under the current criteria, not Top Safety Pick+. That is still a strong award, but the two IIHS designations are not interchangeable.

- REALISTIC DETAILS : Features authentic chrome trim accents, detailed interior, and period-correct wheel designs true to the original 1953 Cadillac.
11. 2026 Chevrolet Tahoe: best large SUV for towing and passenger capacity
The Tahoe is appropriate when “family SUV” also means towing a substantial trailer, carrying lots of passengers, or fitting bulky cargo behind the third row. Car and Driver gives it a 10/10 rating, lists a $63,495 starting price, and highlights its passenger capacity, towing ability, and available off-road capability.
The costs of that capability include a much larger exterior, higher purchase price, and typically higher running costs than the compact and midsize SUVs above. The Tahoe is not listed among the 2025 IIHS Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ winners. Its size and available driver-assistance technology should not be presented as a substitute for an IIHS award.

The Expedition is the other logical choice for families that routinely need maximum interior volume, towing capacity, and three-row flexibility. Kelley Blue Book includes the 2026 Expedition in its best three-row family-vehicle list.
Model-year precision matters because the 2025 Expedition was all-new. Specifications, features, pricing, and safety information for that generation should be labeled by model year rather than generalized across older Expeditions. Compare the exact trim and configuration you intend to buy, especially if towing equipment or extended-length cargo space is important.
How to choose among these family SUVs
- Decide whether you truly need three rows. If the third row will be used only twice a year, a CR-V, RAV4, Sportage, Passport, or Ioniq 5 usually offers a simpler daily-driving experience and better efficiency.
- Test your child seats in the second row. Check access to buckles, front-seat legroom, the ability to reach the third-row release, and whether rear-facing seats interfere with the front seats.
- Measure cargo space with every seat occupied. A three-row SUV can have plenty of room with row three folded and very little behind it when all seats are up.
- Match the powertrain to your routine. Hybrids such as the CR-V, Sportage, and Palisade Hybrid avoid charging stops. EVs such as the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 9 work best when home charging is available. Tahoe and Expedition buyers are prioritizing towing and capacity over fuel economy.
- Verify safety results by model year and build date. Look up the exact vehicle on both NHTSA and IIHS. A five-star NHTSA rating is a separate achievement from an IIHS Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ award.
- Price the whole ownership package. Compare insurance, tires, fuel or electricity, charging installation, maintenance, and the cost of the options required for your family. A low starting price can disappear if the necessary trim is substantially more expensive.
Safety details that should not be overlooked
IIHS awards can depend on model year, configuration, and even build date. For example, the 2026 Sportage’s Top Safety Pick+ designation applies to vehicles built after May 2025. Similar build-date restrictions apply to certain Santa Fe and Sorento awards. Always read the conditions on the current IIHS vehicle page.
Do not combine safety claims from different organizations into one vague statement. “Five-star NHTSA rating,” “IIHS Top Safety Pick,” and “IIHS Top Safety Pick+” come from different testing and evaluation systems. A vehicle should be described as having both only when both organizations list the specific model year and configuration.

Finally, do not assume that a new model retains the safety record of the model it replaces. The 2026 Palisade is a clear example: Edmunds reported incomplete crash-test coverage for the updated model in its May 2026 roundup, even though earlier Palisade results were available.
Our verdict
For most two-row households, the 2026 Honda CR-V Hybrid is the safest all-around recommendation because it balances space, efficiency, comfort, and price. The 2026 Kia Sportage Hybrid is an excellent value alternative, while the 2026 Honda Passport is better for families that spend weekends outdoors.
Among three-row SUVs, the 2026 Toyota Grand Highlander is the practical pick when the third row and cargo area will see regular use. Choose the 2026 Hyundai Palisade Hybrid if hybrid efficiency is the priority, but verify its current crash-test coverage. For maximum towing and passenger capacity, step up to the Chevrolet Tahoe or Ford Expedition. Families ready for an EV should consider the Ioniq 5 for two rows or the Ioniq 9 for three.

The Bottom Line
The right family SUV depends on how many people you carry, how often you use the third row, and whether efficiency, electric driving, towing, or cargo capacity matters most. The Honda CR-V Hybrid is the best broad two-row recommendation; the Toyota Grand Highlander is the more practical three-row choice; and the Tahoe or Expedition make sense only when full-size capability is genuinely needed. Check the exact model year, trim, build date, and safety listing before signing a purchase contract.
