Tesla reveals 20 Cybercabs at We, Robot event, says you’ll be able to buy one for less than $30,000

Tesla showed 20 additional Cybercabs at its We, Robot event and said the two-seat autonomous car could cost less than $30,000. That was a target, not a confirmed price, and the demonstrations took place on private property.

Tesla used its “We, Robot” event at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, California, to show a production-intent autonomous vehicle it calls the Cybercab. Elon Musk arrived in one of the cars and said Tesla expected the two-seat robotaxi to sell for less than $30,000.

That figure was an announced target, not a confirmed MSRP. Tesla did not open orders or publish final specifications at the October 10, 2024 reveal. The event also showed that “20 Cybercabs” needs careful wording: Tesla displayed 20 additional vehicles for demonstrations, rather than selling 20 finished production cars.

What Tesla showed at the We, Robot event

The Cybercab is a compact, two-seat electric vehicle designed specifically for autonomous transportation. The most obvious difference from every current Tesla passenger car is inside the cabin: the displayed Cybercab had no steering wheel and no pedals.

Rather than adapting a Model 3 or Model Y for taxi use, Tesla presented the Cybercab as a purpose-built robotaxi. Its small cabin and lack of conventional driver controls are intended to reduce unnecessary hardware and make the vehicle suitable for a future ride-hailing fleet.

  • Companion to Decoration and Cake Decorations: It plays a great decorative role on display cabinets at home and is a great decoration for boys' birthday cake parties.
  • Gift selection for toy cars for boys aged 3-12: This gift is suitable for children aged 3 and above and is a collectible for car enthusiasts.

Musk arrived onstage in a Cybercab and said there were 20 additional Cybercabs at the event. Tesla also provided demonstration rides in a wider group of roughly 50 autonomous vehicles, including Cybercabs and Model Ys.

Those rides took place on the Warner Bros. studio property. They were not demonstrations on Los Angeles public roads, so the event did not establish that the Cybercab was ready to operate without supervision in unrestricted traffic or in every weather and road condition.

What does “less than $30,000” mean?

Musk said Tesla expected the Cybercab to be available for purchase for less than $30,000. Tesla did not announce a final retail price, order fee, delivery charge, trim level or equipment list.

It is therefore inaccurate to describe the car as a confirmed $29,999 Tesla. The event established an intended price target, not a binding consumer offer. The final price could also depend on production scale, battery size, local taxes, incentives and whether Tesla sells the vehicle to private buyers, fleet operators, or both.

Claim What the event actually established
“Tesla sold 20 Cybercabs” Tesla displayed 20 additional Cybercabs and offered controlled-site demonstration rides.
“The Cybercab costs $29,999” Musk gave an expectation of less than $30,000; Tesla did not publish a final MSRP.
“The demonstrations proved full self-driving” The rides occurred on a private studio lot under event conditions.
“Tesla showed a 20-seat Cybercab” The two-seat car was the Cybercab. The larger vehicle was the Robovan.

When was Tesla planning to build it?

At the reveal, Musk said production was expected to begin in 2026, while acknowledging that Tesla’s projected timelines can be optimistic. Reports at the time commonly described the target as production before 2027.

Subsequent company and industry updates have made the original target less straightforward. Tesla’s first-quarter 2026 filing said the company had begun pilot production of the Cybercab. Later reporting on Tesla’s July 22, 2026 second-quarter shareholder update said the company was no longer expecting to reach volume production in 2026 for the Cybercab, Semi and Megapack 3.

That distinction matters. Pilot production involves building and validating early vehicles; it is not the same as high-volume manufacturing or broad consumer availability. The Cybercab should not be described as a car buyers can already order for under $30,000.

Cybercab and Robovan are different vehicles

Tesla also unexpectedly revealed the Robovan at the event. It is a much larger autonomous vehicle intended to carry up to 20 people or transport goods.

The two “20” figures refer to separate things:

  1. Tesla said there were 20 additional Cybercabs at the event.
  2. The Robovan was presented as capable of carrying up to 20 people or goods.

The Robovan was not a 20-seat version of the Cybercab, and the Cybercab was not the name of Tesla’s larger people carrier.

What remains unknown

Tesla’s presentation left several practical questions unanswered. The company did not provide a final range figure, battery capacity, charging specification, dimensions, cargo capacity or detailed sensor configuration for the Cybercab.

It also did not explain how customers would take responsibility for the vehicle if the car has no manual controls. A privately owned Cybercab could potentially operate as part of Tesla’s robotaxi network when its owner does not need it, but the event did not provide a complete commercial or regulatory plan for that arrangement.

The central technical question is not whether a Cybercab can drive around a mapped studio route. It is whether Tesla can make an unsteered, unpedaled vehicle reliable and legally deployable across public roads, changing traffic conditions and unusual situations. The controlled demonstrations were a preview of Tesla’s intended system, not a certification of that capability.

What the reveal means for buyers

For shoppers, the announcement is best understood as a long-term product promise. Tesla showed the shape and intended purpose of a small autonomous taxi, and Musk attached a sub-$30,000 target to it. But there was no configurator, reservation process, final price or confirmed retail delivery schedule.

Until Tesla publishes those details, the safest summary is:

  • The Cybercab is a two-seat electric robotaxi concept or development vehicle.
  • The displayed version had no steering wheel or pedals.
  • Tesla showed 20 additional Cybercabs at the Burbank event.
  • Musk said the eventual purchase price should be below $30,000.
  • That price was not a confirmed MSRP.
  • Demonstration rides took place on private Warner Bros. property.
  • Pilot production has begun, but volume production was later reported as no longer expected in 2026.

FAQ

Did Tesla sell 20 Cybercabs at the We, Robot event?

No. Tesla displayed 20 additional Cybercabs and offered demonstration rides at Warner Bros. Studios. The event was not a sales launch.

Will the Tesla Cybercab really cost less than $30,000?

Less than $30,000 was Elon Musk’s announced target. Tesla did not confirm a final MSRP, so it should not be treated as a guaranteed $29,999 price.

How many people can the Cybercab carry?

The Cybercab shown at the event was a two-seat vehicle. Tesla’s larger Robovan, not the Cybercab, was described as capable of carrying up to 20 people or goods.

Can I order a Tesla Cybercab now?

No consumer order process, final configuration or confirmed delivery schedule was announced at the reveal. Pilot production has since started, but the vehicle should not be described as broadly available for purchase.

The Bottom Line

Tesla revealed the Cybercab as a two-seat, control-free electric robotaxi and said it could eventually cost less than $30,000. The company showed 20 additional vehicles and provided rides on a private studio lot, but it did not announce a final price or open orders. With volume production later reported as delayed beyond the original 2026 expectation, the Cybercab remains a developing product rather than an affordable autonomous Tesla buyers can purchase today.
