The Fiat Stilo GP Schumacher was the UK version of Fiat’s commemorative Stilo Schumacher edition with an extra handling package developed with Prodrive. “GP” did not mean a Ferrari or a car personally engineered by Michael Schumacher: Fiat used the name to mark the model’s tribute to his Formula One success, while the GP designation identified specific suspension, wheel, tyre and exhaust changes.
What was the Fiat Stilo Schumacher?
Fiat Auto UK announced the Schumacher edition on 3 May 2005, describing it as a three-door, five-cylinder hatchback with 170 bhp. The tribute was to Michael Schumacher’s fifth consecutive Formula One drivers’ title with Ferrari. Fiat said 200 right-hand-drive Schumacher cars would be allocated to the UK, all painted Ferrari red; that figure is for the UK Schumacher allocation, not a stated count of GP cars. The UK release offered the model in standard and GP configurations. The distinction matters: Schumacher identified the commemorative edition, while GP referred to the additional UK-fit Prodrive-developed handling package.
What did the GP package add?
Fiat called it “an aftermarket handling package known as the Stilo GP kit.” The listed components were:

Fiat said the kit lowered the car by approximately 25 mm at the front and 17 mm at the rear. These are period manufacturer specifications. The specified tyre size is not, by itself, proof that a replacement tyre or wheel will suit a particular surviving car; check its actual wheel and fitment before buying replacements.
How was the GP meant to change the drive?
Fiat said Prodrive developed the package using private-facility and public-road work. The stated engineering approach paired higher spring rates with bespoke gas-filled monotube dampers, aiming to reduce body roll and pitch while retaining compliance over bumps. Fiat described the target as better steering response and body control “without compromising its comfortable ride.”

Fiat also presented the larger wheels and lower-profile tyres as a way to improve grip and steering feedback. Those are the manufacturer’s design claims, not independent instrumented findings or a firsthand road-test verdict. The available specifications explain what the kit was intended to do, but do not establish how every car performs today.
Which engine and performance figures apply?
For the UK Schumacher, Fiat specified a 170 bhp five-cylinder petrol engine. The international MY2004 specification for the Stilo 2.4 20v lists 125 kW (170 bhp) at 6,000 rpm and 221 Nm at 3,500 rpm, with MacPherson struts at the front and a semi-independent torsion-beam rear suspension. These are manufacturer figures for the period model, not results from a modern test. Fiat’s MY2004 Stilo specifications

Do not fold figures from another market into the UK GP specification. Fiat’s German-market release of 2 February 2005 lists the broader Michael Schumacher special edition with a choice of 2.4-litre petrol at 170 PS or 1.9-litre Multijet diesel at 140 PS. It gives 0–100 km/h times of 8.5 and 9.7 seconds, and maximum speeds of 215 and 203 km/h, respectively. Those are period manufacturer figures for the German edition and its two engines; the release does not establish that the diesel was offered as a UK GP. Fiat’s German-market announcement
How does the standard Schumacher compare with the GP?
| Feature | Standard UK Schumacher | UK Schumacher GP |
|---|---|---|
| Engine and body | 170 bhp five-cylinder, three-door hatchback (Fiat UK, 2005) | Same UK Schumacher model; the GP package added handling hardware |
| Suspension | Standard Schumacher suspension; the launch announcement does not list a separate specification | Eibach springs and Bilstein front struts and rear dampers |
| Wheels and tyres | Standard Schumacher equipment; the launch announcement does not list a separate specification | 7 x 18-inch OZ Superturismo wheels with 215/40 ZR18 Continental ContiSport Contact 2 tyres |
| Exhaust | Standard Schumacher equipment; the launch announcement does not list a separate specification | Stainless rear silencer with twin outlets |
| Ride height | No change stated for the standard car | Approximately 25 mm lower at the front and 17 mm at the rear, according to Fiat |
The broader Schumacher edition varied by market. Fiat’s German release documents petrol and diesel versions; Fiat UK’s announcement describes the UK car as the 170 bhp petrol. That is a market distinction, not evidence that every Schumacher badge denotes the same engine or GP equipment.

What should you check on a car advertised as a GP?
For a prospective buyer, treat the name and badges as a starting point rather than proof of specification. Fiat’s UK material describes a numbered plaque and identifies the GP components, but does not provide a current authentication registry or formal inspection procedure.
- Look for the numbered plaque and compare the car’s details with available ownership and service records.
- Inspect for the named GP hardware: Eibach springs, Bilstein dampers and struts, the OZ wheels, the specified tyre size, and the twin-outlet stainless silencer.
- Record any substitutions or modifications. A car may have been repaired or altered since new, so present hardware and historic originality are separate questions.
- Have the vehicle and its wheel-and-tyre fitment assessed on their actual condition before purchase or replacement parts are chosen.
The period releases establish the original specification and Fiat’s intended handling changes. They do not establish today’s market value, surviving-car numbers, reliability record, condition trends or current availability of original parts.
