The 2.0-liter, rear-wheel-drive, six-speed-manual model was listed at ¥7,612,000 including Japanese tax; Mazda’s current model page says its lottery application period has ended.
What is the Mazda Spirit Racing Roadster 12R?
The 12R is a hand-built special based on Mazda’s Roadster, the name used for the MX-5 in Japan. It was developed under MAZDA SPIRIT RACING, Mazda’s motorsport sub-brand. At Tokyo Auto Salon in January 2025, Mazda described a model with a dedicated engine specification and distinctive chassis, seating, aerodynamic and visual details. Mazda’s Tokyo Auto Salon announcement introduced the project; its later October 2025 sales announcement provided the Japan-market price and technical specifications.
What Mazda changed
The 2.0-liter SKYACTIV-G gasoline engine uses a dedicated camshaft, cylinder head, pistons and exhaust manifold. Mazda also lists an aluminum tower bar, dedicated wheels, full bucket seats, new aero parts, dedicated body decals and Aero Gray paint among the 12R’s features. These changes distinguish it from a standard Roadster, though Mazda’s published specifications do not provide an acceleration time or independent performance test.
How much horsepower does the Mazda Miata 12R have?
Mazda lists the 12R at 200 PS (147 kW) at 7,200 rpm and 215 N·m of torque at 4,700 rpm. PS is a metric horsepower unit; it should not be rewritten as 200 mechanical horsepower. In its October 2025 announcement, Mazda called 200 PS the development target as of September 2025. The current Japanese model page lists that output as the model specification. Mazda’s technical release and current Japanese 12R page provide those figures.

The phrase “first time ever” needs a narrower scope than the headline suggests. Mazda’s sources establish 200 PS as the stated output for this 12R iteration, but they do not establish that no Miata in any market, past factory variant or modified build has ever reached 200 horsepower.
How many Mazda Spirit Racing Roadster 12R cars will be built?
Mazda’s October 2025 sales announcement offered 200 new-car allocations through a lottery. That is the reliable figure behind the 12R’s limited availability—not the 100 sometimes reported in early coverage. Mazda’s official January speech also said 200, and the October sales release repeated the 200-allocation figure. The reason some reports gave 100 is not established by Mazda’s sources. Mazda further notes that promotional and other vehicles may be produced in addition to the 200 cars offered by lottery, so 200 is best described as the number of new-car lottery allocations, not a guaranteed cap on every 12R built for any purpose.

12R specifications and comparison with the regular Spirit Racing Roadster
Mazda announced a regular MAZDA SPIRIT RACING ROADSTER alongside the more focused 12R. The two Japan-market cars share the Roadster name but differ in output, weight, equipment and allocation scale.

The 12R is the higher-output, lighter and more limited of the two. Mazda’s October 2025 comparison and figures are for Japan-market models; they should not be treated as U.S. MX-5 specifications.

Can you buy the 200 PS Miata in the United States?
Mazda’s 12R is a Japan-market model, and the cited Mazda materials do not announce U.S. sales. Its lottery was conducted through Mazda’s official app from October 5 to October 20, 2025, and the current Japanese model page says applications have closed. Mazda expected deliveries to begin in early January 2026, according to its October 2025 announcement; that stated expectation does not establish current U.S. availability.
For context, Mazda North American Operations listed the standard 2024 U.S. MX-5 at 181 hp and 151 lb-ft. That is a different market and model specification, and its SAE horsepower and pound-feet figures are not a direct unit-for-unit comparison with the 12R’s PS and N·m ratings. Mazda USA’s 2024 MX-5 announcement gives the U.S. figures.

What the 12R costs—and what is known about buying one
Mazda listed the 12R at ¥7,612,000 including tax in Japan. The announced lottery was the route for the 200 new-car allocations, with applications accepted through Mazda’s official app during the October 5–20, 2025 window. That window is over; Mazda’s current Japanese page marks the 12R lottery application as closed. The published price is a Japan-market manufacturer suggested price and does not establish a U.S. retail price, import cost or current resale value.
Is there an official 12R model car?
Mazda announced an officially supervised 1:18-scale model of the Roadster 12R for sale through its Mazda Official Goods Shop starting January 9, 2026. That announcement confirms the model product, but not its current inventory or availability through other retailers. Mazda’s merchandise announcement has the product details.
