What Is Slate Auto’s “Transformer” EV? The Bezos-Backed Truck That Converts Into an SUV

Slate Auto’s Bezos-backed Slate Truck is a preproduction electric pickup that physically converts into a five-seat SUV. Here are its current price, specs, range, safety status and delivery plans.

The vehicle is Slate Auto’s Slate Truck, also called the Blank Slate in its basic form. It is a real preproduction electric pickup backed by Jeff Bezos’ family office—but it does not literally transform while driving. Instead, owners can physically remove and install modular body, seating and safety components to convert the two-seat pickup into a five-seat SUV or another configuration.

As of August 10, 2026, Slate lists the base truck at $24,950 before destination, taxes, fees and options. The company plans to begin first deliveries in the fourth quarter of 2026, so the vehicle remains a future production model rather than an EV buyers can take home today.

The short answer: a modular EV, not a robotic Transformer

Slate Auto is a Michigan-centered electric-vehicle startup founded in 2022 that emerged from stealth in April 2025. Its first product is a small, rear-wheel-drive electric pickup designed around removable modules and a large accessory catalog.

The basic Blank Slate Truck has two doors, two seats and an open pickup bed. With the appropriate kit, Slate says it can become a five-seat Squareback SUV, a five-seat Fastback SUV, an Open Air vehicle or a two-seat truck with enclosed rear cargo storage.

KiNSMART - 2019 Dodge Ram 1500 Pickup 1:46 O Scale 5" Die Cast Metal Model Toy Truck (White)
  • SCALE DETAILS: Precisely crafted 1:46 O scale die-cast metal model of the 2019 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck, measuring approximately 5 inches in length
  • AUTHENTIC DESIGN: Features detailed black exterior finish, realistic wheels, and accurate body styling matching the full-size 2019 Ram 1500 truck
  • CONSTRUCTION: Built with durable die-cast metal construction and high-quality plastic components for long-lasting play value
  • DISPLAY QUALITY: Perfect for collectors and enthusiasts, with authentic detailing including grille, headlights, and body contours
  • RECOMMENDED AGE: Suitable for ages 3 years and up, makes an ideal gift for truck enthusiasts and young collectors

That conversion is physical. It involves removing parts, installing a rear seating structure, attaching a roof or body shell and fitting safety equipment such as a roll cage and airbags. There are no powered hinges, robotic panels or push-button shape changes. The concept is closer to a modular vehicle upfit than to a science-fiction vehicle that changes form on its own.

Slate says the truck can be ordered in different configurations or converted after purchase. Owners may be able to do some work themselves through Slate’s Slate U instructional system, while service partners can handle installations for buyers who do not want to perform the work.

How the Slate Truck becomes an SUV

The conversion process is not a simple change of trim. The truck and SUV use the same underlying vehicle, but the body, seating and safety hardware change.

  1. The partition between the cab and pickup bed is removed.
  2. The open-bed configuration is changed to accommodate the rear passenger area.
  3. A rear bench seat for three passengers is installed.
  4. The roof and rear body shell are attached. Buyers can choose an upright Squareback or a sloped Fastback design.
  5. A roll cage and integrated airbags are added for the SUV configuration.
  6. The completed vehicle is configured as a five-seat SUV rather than a two-seat pickup.

InsideEVs reported that a demonstrated SUV kit included the rear bench, roof and body components, along with a roll cage incorporating airbags. Slate employees converted a prototype in roughly an hour during one demonstration, while the company has described owner installation as a job that could take a few hours. Those are demonstrations and company estimates—not independently verified installation times for final customer vehicles.

In practice, an owner may need tools, clear working space and help lifting large panels. More importantly, the SUV kit includes structural and restraint-system components. Cosmetic accessories may be reasonable DIY projects, but airbags, roll-cage components, wiring and high-voltage systems deserve professional handling unless the owner is fully qualified and follows Slate’s final instructions.

The configurations Slate has announced

Configuration What it is
Blank Slate Truck Two seats and an open pickup bed.
Squareback SUV Five seats, an upright enclosed rear body, roll cage and additional airbags.
Fastback SUV Five seats with a more steeply sloped rear body.
Open Air Five seats with an open rear area rather than a conventional hardtop.
Cargo Kit Two seats with enclosed rear cargo storage in place of the open bed.

Slate presents these as configurations of one vehicle, not necessarily separate models. The company has not fully explained how often a typical owner is expected to switch between them, where removed panels and seats should be stored, or whether repeated conversions could affect seals, trim, fasteners or wiring.

Current price: it is no longer a “$20,000 EV”

Slate’s current listed prices, as of August 10, 2026, are:

Configuration Starting price
Blank Slate Truck $24,950
Squareback SUV $29,950
Fastback SUV $31,950
Destination charge $1,450

The base truck therefore starts at $26,400 before taxes, title, registration, government fees, documentation charges and options once Slate’s destination charge is added. The Squareback is $5,000 above the base truck, and the Fastback is $7,000 above it before destination and other costs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These are factory-configuration prices. Slate’s public materials do not clearly establish whether every after-delivery conversion kit will cost exactly the same as ordering that configuration from the factory. A buyer should separately confirm the cost of the kit, installation, shipping and any service-partner charge.

Why early articles quoted a price below $20,000

When Slate first revealed the truck in 2025, coverage centered on a roughly $25,000 vehicle and the possibility of a price below $20,000 after a federal EV tax credit. That calculation is no longer a current buying-price description.

The IRS says the federal New Clean Vehicle Credit is unavailable for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025, subject to transitional rules for vehicles acquired by that date. Since Slate’s first deliveries are planned for late 2026, ordinary future buyers should not assume they can subtract the former $7,500 consumer credit from the truck’s price. See the IRS clean-vehicle-credit guidance before relying on any incentive claim.

State and local incentives may still exist, but they vary by location, income, vehicle and program date. They can also change. The relevant comparison is the actual out-the-door price when the vehicle is ready for delivery—not the original launch headline.

  • 📦 📬 MOVING FEATURES: Both vehicles feature rolling wheels and opening doors for interactive play experience

Current specifications: what Slate says the truck will deliver

The figures below come primarily from Slate’s dated June 24, 2026 specification sheet. Because the truck remains in preproduction, these are manufacturer estimates and may change before production or after official certification.

Specification Slate’s current estimate
Battery 65 kWh, with 63 kWh usable
Chemistry Lithium iron phosphate (LFP)
Drive Rear-wheel drive
Motor Single rear-mounted motor
Output 135 kW, approximately 181 horsepower
Torque 264 Nm / 195 lb-ft
Projected pickup range 205 miles
Estimated 0–60 mph 8.0 seconds
Estimated top speed 90 mph
Charging connector NACS
Level 1 charging 20–80% in approximately 17 hours at 1.9 kW
Level 2 charging 20–100% in approximately four hours at 11 kW
DC fast charging 20–80% in approximately 30 minutes at up to 120 kW
Pickup payload 1,550 pounds
Pickup towing 2,000 pounds
SUV payload 1,263 pounds
SUV towing 1,824 pounds
Length 174.6 inches
Width without mirrors 70.6 inches
Wheelbase 108.9 inches
Ground clearance 7.8 inches pickup; 7.6 inches SUV
Curb weight 4,048 pounds pickup; 4,335 pounds SUV
Pickup-bed length 60.5 inches
Frunk volume 7.0 cubic feet

The 205-mile figure is a projected estimate based on an approximation of the EPA test cycle, not an official EPA-rated range. Real-world range will vary with speed, temperature, tires, payload, driving conditions and the installed body configuration. Slate’s detailed sheet gives the range for the pickup; range for the Squareback, Fastback and other configurations may differ.

A specification conflict buyers should know about

Some current Slate store pages list a 150-kW motor, while the June 24 specification sheet lists 135 kW and approximately 181 horsepower. Earlier coverage also referred to about 201 horsepower. The newer 135-kW figure is the more appropriate number to use with the current 65-kWh battery and 205-mile projected range, but Slate’s online pages have not been completely harmonized.

That means buyers should confirm the final motor output, range, charging rate and performance figures before signing purchase documents. It would be misleading to combine the older 150-kW/201-horsepower figures with the newer range and battery figures without explaining the change.

Why the Slate is so basic inside

The low starting price is partly a result of what Slate leaves out. The base vehicle is intentionally stripped down compared with most modern cars:

  • No central touchscreen.
  • Manual crank windows.
  • Physical, analog HVAC controls.
  • A phone or tablet mount instead of built-in infotainment.
  • USB power for the owner’s device.
  • Optional audio equipment, including speaker and soundbar-style accessories.
  • Gray composite body panels rather than conventional painted bodywork.
  • Optional wraps and cosmetic accessories.

Slate’s argument is that customers should not have to pay for equipment they do not want. A phone can supply navigation and entertainment, while buyers can add audio, lighting, storage, roof racks and other features later.

That approach may reduce parts count and make the vehicle feel simpler to repair, but it is not free convenience. The buyer must provide a phone or tablet, live without standard power windows and accept that a usable, personalized vehicle may cost considerably more than the headline price once accessories are added.

The accessory marketplace is central to Slate’s business model

Slate is selling more than a basic electric pickup. Its intended business model includes a marketplace of add-ons that lets owners personalize the vehicle at purchase or later.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The company currently advertises more than 200 accessories, with more than 80% priced below $500. It also says more than 100 wrap colors will be available at launch, with the wrap itself priced below $500 and professional installation targeted at less than $500. Planned accessories include roof racks, lighting, wheel treatments, storage systems, audio equipment, interior items and the body-style conversion kits.

The catalog is changing, and Slate’s website has not been perfectly consistent: one general FAQ section has referred to “nearly four dozen” accessories, while current marketplace and press materials cite more than 200. The larger, newer figure is the one to treat as current, but buyers should verify availability and pricing for a specific accessory.

The marketplace creates an appealing ownership idea: buy a simple truck now, then add equipment as needs change. It also creates unanswered questions about long-term parts availability, warranty coverage, storage of removed components and resale value. A buyer considering the SUV conversion should ask whether the kit can be installed repeatedly, what tools are required and whether owner installation affects warranty coverage.

Safety: targets are not test results

Slate says the vehicle is designed to achieve a five-star U.S. NCAP rating. That is a company objective, not evidence that the vehicle has already earned a five-star NHTSA rating. No official crash-test result should be implied unless NHTSA publishes one.

Slate lists safety equipment including:

  • Automatic emergency braking.
  • Forward-collision warning.
  • Backup camera.
  • Traction control.
  • Electronic stability control.
  • Driver and passenger airbags.
  • Side-curtain airbags.
  • Additional airbags for the SUV configuration.
  • Pedestrian identification.
  • Automatic high beams.

The SUV conversion deserves particular scrutiny because it adds structural and restraint-system components. The roll cage and integrated airbags are not ordinary cosmetic accessories. Installation quality, sensor connections, diagnostic systems and final certification all matter.

Before buying, a customer should confirm whether the pickup and each SUV configuration have completed required certification and crash testing, how airbag diagnostics work after conversion, who is authorized to install safety-critical parts and whether every configuration is legal and insurable in the buyer’s state. Slate has not publicly resolved all of those questions.

Who Jeff Bezos is—and is not—in the company

Calling Slate “Bezos-backed” is accurate when it refers to an investment by Bezos’ family office. It is not accurate to call the vehicle an Amazon truck or describe Slate as Bezos’ car company without evidence of ownership or control.

  • Bezos’ family office invested in Slate’s initial funding round.
  • The amount of Bezos’ investment has not been publicly disclosed.
  • Slate’s first reported funding round in 2023 totaled approximately $120 million.
  • Industry reporting put total funding at about $700 million before a $650 million Series C.
  • The Series C was led by TWG Global, associated with Mark Walter and Thomas Tull.
  • Reported total funding reached approximately $1.4 billion after the Series C.

Slate originated as a project associated with Re:Build Manufacturing, whose leadership included former Amazon executive Jeff Wilke and manufacturing executive Miles Arnone. The company’s current CEO is Peter Faricy, a former Amazon Marketplace executive. Former CEO Chris Barman moved into a vehicle-focused leadership role in March 2026.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bezos’ involvement also should not be overstated. Former Slate CEO Chris Barman characterized him as relatively hands-off, and Bezos’ family-office representative Melinda Lewison left Slate’s board in 2026, according to state filings reviewed by TechCrunch. The safest description is that Slate is a privately held EV startup backed by Bezos’ family office and other investors.

Ordering and availability

Slate is not yet delivering production vehicles. Its current process is:

  1. The former $50 reservation program, which was refundable, is closed.
  2. Preorders opened June 24, 2026.
  3. The preorder deposit is $300, or $250 for existing reservation holders.
  4. The new preorder deposit is nonrefundable but counts toward the vehicle purchase.
  5. Customers are expected to finalize accessories, financing and purchase documents closer to their assigned delivery window.
  6. Slate plans to begin first deliveries in the fourth quarter of 2026.

Slate said it had more than 180,000 reservation holders as of June 24, 2026. That is a measure of interest, not a count of orders, sales or delivered vehicles. Reservation holders should not automatically be described as customers.

The company plans to sell directly to consumers rather than through a traditional dealership network. Direct sales can simplify the buying process, but it also places more responsibility on Slate to provide delivery centers, service partners, parts support, warranty administration and recall assistance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manufacturing is the biggest execution test

Slate plans to assemble the vehicle in Warsaw, Indiana, at a reindustrialized former printing facility. The company says it will invest nearly $400 million, create more than 2,000 jobs and design and engineer the vehicle in the United States.

Slate’s manufacturing materials describe a program designed in California and Michigan, engineered in Michigan and assembled in Indiana. NHTSA’s manufacturer database lists Slate Auto LLC as a completed-vehicle manufacturer, but that registration does not mean mass production has begun.

A prepared factory is not the same as a functioning high-volume vehicle plant. Slate still has to complete final validation, certification, supplier ramp-up, manufacturing quality control, service training and delivery logistics. The first vehicles journalists have ridden in are preproduction examples, not proof of a fully homologated, crash-tested and customer-supported production fleet.

What changed since the 2025 reveal?

The Slate described in early coverage is not identical to the current specification.

Item Early 2025 plan or coverage June 2026 update
Headline price About $25,000, with a possible under-$20,000 price after the federal credit $24,950 before destination, fees and options
Battery 52.7 kWh, with a possible 84.3-kWh option 65 kWh, 63 kWh usable
Range target About 150 miles, or 240 miles with the larger battery 205 miles projected for the pickup
Motor 150 kW, about 201 horsepower 135 kW, about 181 horsepower on the detailed sheet
Delivery timing Earlier production plans First deliveries planned for Q4 2026

The federal-credit-dependent under-$20,000 figure is especially important to retire from current coverage. It described an earlier incentive environment and should not be presented as the price available to an ordinary late-2026 buyer.

What kind of buyer could make sense for the Slate?

It could suit buyers who:

  • Want a small electric pickup rather than a conventional crossover.
  • Drive relatively short daily distances.
  • Can charge at home.
  • Prefer physical controls and a simple interior.
  • Value a low base price over luxury equipment.
  • Enjoy DIY projects and vehicle personalization.
  • Need occasional pickup-bed utility but may later need rear seats.
  • Are comfortable buying from a new automaker.

It deserves caution from buyers who:

  • Regularly make long highway trips.
  • Need all-wheel drive.
  • Tow heavy trailers.
  • Need four doors or easy rear-seat access.
  • Expect built-in infotainment, power windows and a conventional audio system.
  • Do not have reliable home charging.
  • Need a vehicle immediately.
  • Want proven reliability, resale data and an established service network.
  • Do not want to install, remove or maintain accessories.

The central trade-offs

Low price versus standard equipment

The $24,950 starting price is attractive, but it buys a deliberately sparse truck. Manual windows, no central display, optional audio, composite body panels and separately priced accessories are part of the reason the starting figure is low.

Range versus affordability

A projected 205 miles is a significant improvement over Slate’s original 150-mile target, but it is not class-leading. Nissan lists the 2026 Leaf S+ at $29,990 and up to 303 miles of range in its U.S. comparison tool. The Leaf is a more conventional passenger EV and may be a better choice for shoppers who prioritize range over pickup utility and modular customization.

Pickup utility versus SUV utility

The SUV configuration adds seating and enclosed cargo space, but it is heavier and carries lower rated payload and towing limits. Slate’s estimates give the pickup a 1,550-pound payload and 2,000-pound towing capacity, compared with 1,263 pounds of payload and 1,824 pounds of towing for the SUV.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Modularity versus convenience

The ability to change the vehicle is useful only if owners are willing to do the work. Panels and seats need storage. Large parts may need two people to move. Safety-critical components may require a service partner. Slate also has not fully specified after-delivery kit pricing, installation requirements, warranty treatment or long-term replacement-part availability.

Innovation versus startup risk

Slate has raised substantial capital and has a defined manufacturing plan, but it has not yet delivered vehicles to consumers. Potential risks include delays, changing specifications, supplier problems, safety or homologation issues, limited accessory availability, weak early service coverage and the long-term parts and warranty risk that comes with any new automaker.

How it compares with likely alternatives

2026 Ford Maverick Hybrid

Ford lists the 2026 Maverick from $27,145 and offers a hybrid powertrain, four doors and established dealer support. It is not a fully electric vehicle, but it is arguably the most direct alternative for someone who primarily wants an affordable compact pickup.

The Maverick’s advantages are conventional convenience features, easier long-distance use, a dealer network and a more established product. The Slate counters with fully electric operation, modular SUV conversion and the possibility of lower home-charging energy costs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

See Ford’s Maverick configurator for current pricing and equipment.

2026 Nissan Leaf

The 2026 Leaf S+ is listed by Nissan at $29,990 with up to 303 miles of range. It is a better fit for buyers who want a conventional EV, greater range and mainstream passenger-car usability. It does not offer the Slate’s pickup bed or physically interchangeable body styles.

Compare current figures through Nissan’s U.S. comparison tool.

2027 Chevrolet Bolt

Chevrolet has announced the returning 2027 Bolt as another affordable, conventional EV. GM has published different price presentations—one announcement cited a $29,990 launch MSRP including destination, while a later article cited a $28,995 starting MSRP—so buyers should verify the exact trim and destination treatment.

The Bolt’s established-brand backing and conventional layout may appeal to shoppers who do not need a pickup. The Slate is more unusual and potentially more useful for buyers who value cargo flexibility and customization.

Chevrolet’s announcement is available from GM News.

Future electric pickups

Ford’s forthcoming Fathom may become another affordable electric-pickup competitor. Axios reported in August 2026 that Ford planned a starting price around $28,000, but the Fathom is a future product, not an available alternative or a vehicle with an established delivery record.

Questions Slate still needs to answer

  • Will first deliveries actually begin in the fourth quarter of 2026?
  • Will the final motor rating be 135 kW or 150 kW?
  • Will the 205-mile projection become the official EPA result?
  • How much range will the Squareback, Fastback and Open Air configurations lose or gain?
  • Will the 120-kW fast-charging specification survive final validation?
  • Will an all-wheel-drive version eventually be offered?
  • What tools and number of people will the conversion require?
  • Where will owners store removed body panels, seats and hardware?
  • What is the final price of an after-delivery SUV conversion?
  • Does owner installation affect warranty coverage?
  • Who will service airbag, structural and high-voltage components?
  • How many of the advertised 3,000 RepairPal locations will handle Slate vehicles on day one?
  • How quickly will replacement parts and conversion components be available?
  • Will insurers treat the pickup and all SUV configurations identically?

Bottom line

Slate Auto’s vehicle is real, ambitious and unusual—but the “Transformer” description needs translation. The Slate Truck does not autonomously change shape. It is a preproduction two-seat electric pickup designed so owners can physically install modular components and turn it into a five-seat SUV or another body style.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The concept is compelling for a buyer who wants a customizable, potentially inexpensive electric utility vehicle and is comfortable with a sparse interior, rear-wheel drive, a projected 205-mile range and the risks of a new automaker. It is less compelling for anyone who needs long-range travel, four-door convenience, all-wheel drive, proven crash-test results or a mature service network.

The most accurate current description is therefore: a $24,950-before-fees modular electric pickup, backed in part by Jeff Bezos’ family office, with SUV conversion planned and first deliveries targeted for late 2026—not a $20,000 shape-shifting Amazon car.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Slate Truck literally transform like a Transformer?

No. The comparison is marketing shorthand. Owners must physically remove and install body, seating, roll-cage, airbag and other components. It cannot change configuration while moving or by pressing a button.

Is Jeff Bezos the owner of Slate Auto?

Bezos’ family office invested in Slate, but the investment amount has not been disclosed. He should not be described as Slate’s founder, CEO, owner or Amazon’s representative without new corporate evidence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can the Slate still qualify for the $7,500 federal EV tax credit?

The IRS says the New Clean Vehicle Credit is unavailable for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025, subject to transitional rules. Because Slate’s first deliveries are planned for late 2026, buyers should not assume the former credit will apply.

Can I buy a Slate Truck now?

Not as a delivered production vehicle. Slate opened a preorder program on June 24, 2026, with a $300 nonrefundable deposit, or $250 for existing reservation holders. First deliveries are planned for the fourth quarter of 2026.

The Bottom Line

Slate Auto’s “Transformer” EV is a modular electric pickup, not a robotically shape-shifting car. Its $24,950 starting price is before destination, taxes, fees and options; its 205-mile range is still a manufacturer projection; and its late-2026 deliveries remain a plan rather than a completed production milestone. The idea could work for practical, customization-minded buyers—but the cost of accessories, physical conversion work, unverified final safety results and new-automaker service risk should be part of the decision.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
