No confirmed Toyota FJ Cruiser EV is on sale or officially priced as of August 10, 2026. Toyota has not published a battery size, motor output, EPA range, charging specification, trim lineup, U.S. release date, or MSRP for a production vehicle using that name. The electric Toyota most often mistaken for an FJ Cruiser EV is the Compact Cruiser EV, a 2021 design concept. Its published material contains no production specifications.
Toyota has introduced a real vehicle called the Land Cruiser FJ in Japan, but it is a gasoline-powered five-seat SUV with a 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine, part-time four-wheel drive, and a six-speed automatic transmission. It is not an electric FJ Cruiser and is not officially called the FJ Cruiser. Toyota’s U.S. website lists the old FJ Cruiser only as a discontinued vehicle; the 2014 model year was the last U.S. model year. Toyota has not announced U.S. availability or an order path for the Japanese Land Cruiser FJ.
That makes online claims about a 400-horsepower, 300-mile, $55,000-to-$75,000 FJ Cruiser EV unsupported rather than confirmed specifications. Here is what the photos, names, prices, and official Toyota information actually show.
Why the FJ Cruiser EV name keeps appearing
Three separate Toyota vehicles and design references are being blended together online:
- Toyota FJ Cruiser: the distinctive SUV sold in the United States through the 2014 model year.
- Toyota Compact Cruiser EV: a rugged, all-wheel-drive electric concept unveiled as part of Toyota’s 2021 battery-electric strategy.
- Toyota Land Cruiser FJ: a production five-seat gasoline SUV launched in Japan on May 14, 2026.
The word FJ also has a long Land Cruiser history. The classic FJ40 is one of the early Land Cruiser models that shaped the visual language associated with the name. Toyota later used that heritage for the FJ Cruiser, which arrived as a modern, retro-styled SUV for the 2007 model year.
The original U.S.-market FJ Cruiser ended after 2014. Its final U.S. version used a 4.0-liter V6 producing 260 horsepower and 271 lb-ft of torque, with rear-wheel-drive-based 4×2 and four-wheel-drive configurations. Toyota said production would end after the 2014 model year and that more than 200,000 examples had been sold since 2006. See Toyota’s 2014 specifications and final-model-year announcement.
That history explains why an electric compact SUV with Land Cruiser-inspired styling is often described as an FJ Cruiser successor. It does not establish that Toyota approved the name FJ Cruiser EV, however. Toyota’s own explanation of the new Land Cruiser FJ says its development concept is significantly different from that of the older FJ Cruiser. The new model was developed around a Freedom & Joy concept, not announced as an electric second-generation FJ Cruiser. Toyota’s naming explanation is available in its official fact-and-data document.
The Compact Cruiser EV: the real source of many EV images
Toyota revealed the Compact Cruiser EV in 2021. Toyota described it as a compact, rugged, all-wheel-drive electric concept influenced by Land Cruiser heritage. Toyota Europe positioned the design toward younger urban customers with active outdoor lifestyles. The concept received considerable attention because its upright proportions, exposed-looking protective elements, contrasting roof, and short overhangs recalled the character of the FJ Cruiser and older Land Cruisers.

Toyota’s official material did not announce a production battery, motor configuration, horsepower, torque, EPA range, charging rate, towing rating, ground clearance, curb weight, MSRP, trim structure, warranty, or U.S. release date. Toyota also has not published a confirmed production program that permits those figures to be treated as specifications.

What about the $35,000–$45,000 estimate?
Car and Driver has published an estimated $35,000-to-$45,000 MSRP for a future Compact Cruiser EV-style model. That is a media estimate for an expected vehicle whose mechanical details remain unclear, not a Toyota-announced price. It should not be presented as the price of an FJ Cruiser EV.
Photos: how to identify what you are looking at
A photograph is not proof that Toyota has released a production EV. The safest approach is to identify the vehicle and follow the image back to an official archive or newsroom post.

1. Compact Cruiser EV concept photos
Use the official concept label in any published caption. Do not crop away the motor-show or concept context and then describe the image as production photography.
2. Production 2026 Land Cruiser FJ photos
The Land Cruiser FJ may resemble the Compact Cruiser concept enough to create confusion, but it is not an EV. Do not use its images to illustrate an alleged FJ Cruiser EV without clearly identifying the gasoline production model.
3. Discontinued FJ Cruiser photos
These are the discontinued FJ Cruiser, not an electric successor. If an image comes from a fan site, social-media post, or AI image generator, label it clearly as an unofficial rendering or illustrative image. A genuine Toyota source should normally provide model identification, Toyota branding, and enough context to establish whether the vehicle is a concept, prototype, or production model.
Photo-authentication checklist
- Check whether the source is Toyota’s global newsroom, Toyota Japan, or Toyota USA.
- Look for a concept, prototype, motor-show, or production designation in the caption.
- Check for Toyota branding, a real vehicle plate, consistent reflections, and a physical display environment.
- Be cautious of digitally generated backgrounds, impossible panel gaps, inconsistent badges, or images that appear only on SEO pages.
- Never treat an AI-generated image or fan render as evidence of a production vehicle.
The real 2026 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ
Toyota launched the Land Cruiser FJ in Japan on May 14, 2026. This is the vehicle responsible for many current headlines about a new Toyota with FJ in its name. It is a gasoline-powered, five-seat, ladder-frame SUV—not an FJ Cruiser EV and not a U.S.-market revival of the discontinued FJ Cruiser.
| Specification | Japan-market Land Cruiser FJ VX |
|---|---|
| Market | Japan |
| Launch date | May 14, 2026 |
| Price | ¥4,500,100 including Japanese consumption tax |
| Seating | Five |

| Output | 120 kW / 163 PS |
| Torque | 246 N·m |

| Length × width × height | 4,575 × 1,855 × 1,960 mm |
| Wheelbase | 2,580 mm |
| Turning radius | 5.5 m |
| Cargo volume | 795 liters with rear seats in use; 1,607 liters with them folded |

The Land Cruiser FJ uses a ladder frame, double-wishbone independent front suspension, and a four-link rigid rear suspension. Its part-time four-wheel-drive system provides H4 and L4 modes. Standard or listed equipment includes Toyota Safety Sense, a Panoramic View Monitor, Blind-Spot Monitor, a 12.3-inch display-audio system, roof rails, a front skid plate, and a rear-mounted spare tire. Toyota also highlights removable and replaceable corner-bumper sections intended to improve repairability. Details are available on Toyota Japan’s performance page, safety page, and official specification brochure.
The Japanese WLTC fuel-economy figure is not an EPA range rating and cannot be compared directly with U.S. electric-vehicle range figures. More importantly, none of these Land Cruiser FJ specifications should be transferred to a hypothetical EV.
Fact-checking the alleged FJ Cruiser EV specifications
Several SEO-style pages have presented a supposed 2026 FJ Cruiser EV as if Toyota had already released it. For example, one page and another page claim a dual-motor powertrain, roughly 400 horsepower, about 450 lb-ft of torque, a 90- or 100-kWh battery, about 300 miles of range, 30-minute DC charging to 80 percent, Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, 20-inch wheels, and pricing from $55,000 to $75,000.
| Online claim | Evidence status as of August 10, 2026 |
|---|---|
| Dual motors | Unverified. No Toyota production specification confirms the layout. |
| About 400 horsepower and 450 lb-ft | Unverified. No Toyota output figures exist for an FJ Cruiser EV. |
| 90- or 100-kWh battery | Unverified. Toyota has not published a battery capacity for the concept or an FJ Cruiser EV. |
| About 300 miles of range | Unverified. There is no EPA listing or Toyota range rating for the alleged vehicle. |
| 80-percent DC charging in about 30 minutes | Unverified. No official charge-rate or charge-time specification has been published. |
| Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 | Unverified for an FJ Cruiser EV. |
| 20-inch wheels | Unverified as a production specification. |
| $55,000–$75,000 pricing | Unverified. Toyota has announced no price. |
| Geneva Motor Show debut | Not corroborated by the official Toyota record reviewed for this article. |
| Late-2025 or fall-2025 deliveries | An expired or false prediction as of August 10, 2026. No corresponding production launch occurred. |
The issue is not that every number is technically impossible. The issue is that the numbers are presented without a Toyota press release, homologation filing, official brochure, EPA listing, or dealer ordering record. Toyota’s actual 2026 Land Cruiser FJ announcement identifies a gasoline engine, while Toyota’s current U.S. model listings do not include an FJ Cruiser EV.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhy this cannot be a conventional FJ Cruiser EV review
There is no production FJ Cruiser EV available for independent road testing as of the stated date. It would therefore be misleading to write that the vehicle drives, has a particular ride quality, delivers a specific range, charges at a particular speed, or performs on a trail. Concept photos cannot establish handling, cabin quality, thermal performance, low-range capability, or durability.
The responsible assessment is an evidence review:
| Review question | What is known | What remains unknown |
|---|---|---|
| What does it look like? | The Compact Cruiser EV concept has compact, rugged, Land Cruiser-inspired styling. | Whether a production vehicle would retain the same body, dimensions, doors, bumpers, or interior. |
| How powerful is it? | No production output has been announced. | Motor count, horsepower, torque, software calibration, and sustained output. |
| How far will it travel? | No EPA or other production range rating exists. | Battery size, usable capacity, efficiency, wheel-and-tire effects, and real-world range. |
| How quickly will it charge? | No production charging specification exists. | Port standard, peak DC rate, charging curve, preconditioning, and cold-weather performance. |
| Can it be a serious off-roader? | The concept was described as all-wheel drive and rugged. | Ground clearance, approach and departure angles, underbody protection, recovery points, traction control, towing rating, and low-speed control. |
| What will it cost? | No official MSRP exists. | Trim structure, destination charge, options, incentives, and market availability. |
| When can customers buy it? | No confirmed production launch or U.S. order program. | Production approval, factory, market timing, dealer allocation, and warranty coverage. |
Those unanswered questions are exactly why an alleged specification sheet should not be treated as a review. If Toyota announces a production model later, its official battery, range, charging, dimensions, and pricing should replace today’s speculation.
Pricing: what each number actually means
| Vehicle or claim | Price status |
|---|---|
| FJ Cruiser EV | No official Toyota price. |
| Compact Cruiser EV | No official Toyota price. The $35,000–$45,000 figure from Car and Driver is a historical media estimate, not MSRP. |
| Land Cruiser FJ | ¥4,500,100 including Japanese consumption tax for the VX grade in Japan. |
| 2026 Toyota bZ Woodland | U.S. starting MSRP of $45,300. |
| 2026 Toyota C-HR | U.S. starting MSRP of $37,000 for the SE. |
| 2026 Toyota 4Runner | U.S. starting MSRP of $41,570, excluding Toyota’s delivery-processing-and-handling charge. |
The Japanese Land Cruiser FJ price is not a U.S. price and should not be converted into dollars without stating the exchange-rate date. Even a simple currency conversion would omit shipping, import costs, certification, taxes, dealer margins, registration, and possible compliance work.

2026 Toyota bZ Woodland: closest current Toyota EV for an adventure-oriented buyer
The 2026 Toyota bZ Woodland is the most relevant current Toyota EV for someone attracted to the idea of a rugged, higher-clearance electric SUV. It starts at $45,300, uses standard dual-motor all-wheel drive, produces 375 net combined horsepower, and has 8.4 inches of ground clearance. Toyota lists up to 3,500 pounds of towing capacity and includes X-MODE and Grip Control.

Those figures are real vehicle ratings, unlike the frequently repeated 300-mile claim for an FJ Cruiser EV. The bZ Woodland is still a midsize electric SUV, not a body-on-frame, low-range replacement for the old FJ Cruiser. See Toyota’s official launch and specifications.
2026 Toyota C-HR: distinctive styling and road-focused EV performance
The 2026 Toyota C-HR starts at $37,000 for the SE. Every version has dual-motor all-wheel drive, with 338 net combined horsepower. Toyota lists EPA-estimated range of 287 miles for the SE and 273 miles for the XSE, a 74.7-kWh battery, a NACS charging port, and approximately 30-minute 10-to-80-percent DC fast charging under stated conditions. Toyota gives the C-HR a manufacturer-estimated 0-to-60-mph time of 4.9 seconds.
The C-HR makes sense for a buyer who wants a distinctive Toyota EV, quick acceleration, and AWD. Its more road-oriented crossover mission makes it a poor substitute for someone specifically seeking the boxy proportions and trail hardware associated with the FJ Cruiser.
2026 Toyota 4Runner: choose it for Toyota off-road capability
If the priority is a current Toyota adventure SUV rather than zero-emissions driving, the 2026 Toyota 4Runner is the relevant U.S. alternative. Its starting MSRP is $41,570 before Toyota’s delivery-processing-and-handling charge. It is not an EV, but it is the more appropriate comparison for buyers who want a truck-based Toyota SUV and are unwilling to trade traditional off-road capability for a crossover electric platform.

2026 Jeep Wrangler: a non-Toyota option for compact trail hardware
The 2026 four-door Jeep Wrangler specifications page lists a starting MSRP from $36,035. It is not an electric FJ Cruiser alternative, but it is relevant for shoppers who want a compact, highly configurable off-road vehicle and are willing to consider another brand. Verify the exact trim, drivetrain, powertrain, equipment, and final transaction price before making a direct comparison.
Which direction makes sense?
- Choose a current Toyota EV if you need zero tailpipe emissions, home charging, quiet acceleration, a verifiable price, and a published range rating. Toyota notes that EV range varies with speed, weather, accessory use, terrain, charging habits, and battery age; see its all-electric vehicle information.
- Choose the Land Cruiser FJ if you are shopping in Japan for a compact Toyota with a ladder frame, part-time 4WD, L4 low range, five seats, and a square cargo area. Do not describe it as an EV, hybrid, U.S.-market FJ Cruiser revival, or confirmed U.S. product.
- Choose the 4Runner or Wrangler if immediate trail capability matters more than an electric powertrain.
- Wait for a future Toyota EV only if you can accept that there is currently no confirmed production name, battery, range, price, warranty, or launch date. Reassess Toyota’s official announcements rather than relying on recycled release-date articles.
Can a U.S. buyer import the Japanese Land Cruiser FJ?
A U.S. buyer should not assume that a Japanese Toyota dealer can simply sell and ship a Land Cruiser FJ for normal American registration. Importing a market-specific vehicle can involve federal and state certification, emissions and safety compliance, import eligibility, customs requirements, parts and service documentation, insurance, and warranty limitations. The vehicle’s right-hand-drive or left-hand-drive configuration, depending on the version, must also be confirmed.
Before spending money, verify the current requirements with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Customs, the relevant state authorities, and an experienced importer. This article does not establish a legal import path, and Toyota has not announced U.S. dealer sales for the Land Cruiser FJ.
How to fact-check a website claiming a 2026 FJ Cruiser EV exists
If a page lists a price, range, or delivery date, check the claim against Toyota’s primary sources:
- Look for a matching announcement in the Toyota global newsroom, Toyota Japan’s official catalog, or the Toyota USA newsroom.
- Check Toyota USA’s current model sitemap and all-electric vehicle page.
- Look for an official brochure, price announcement, order guide, VIN or homologation record, EPA listing, or Toyota dealer ordering system.
- Determine whether the image is labeled concept, prototype, rendering, or production vehicle.
- Check the date. A prediction of late-2025 or fall-2025 deliveries is not evidence of a vehicle in August 2026; it is a prediction that passed without the claimed launch.
- Separate editorial estimates from manufacturer pricing. A publication may estimate an MSRP, but only Toyota can announce Toyota’s MSRP.
Did the Compact Cruiser EV become the Land Cruiser FJ?
Toyota has not described the production Land Cruiser FJ as an electric version of the Compact Cruiser EV. The two vehicles share a compact, rugged Toyota/Land Cruiser design direction, but that is not confirmation that one became the other. Toyota’s own materials distinguish the new Land Cruiser FJ from the older FJ Cruiser, and the production vehicle launched in Japan with a gasoline powertrain.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Toyota making an FJ Cruiser EV?
Toyota has not confirmed a production vehicle officially named FJ Cruiser EV as of August 10, 2026. The Compact Cruiser EV is a concept, and Toyota has not published production specifications or a launch date for it or an FJ Cruiser EV.
Is the 2026 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ electric?
No. The Japan-market Land Cruiser FJ uses a 2.7-liter 2TR-FE gasoline four-cylinder engine, a six-speed automatic transmission, and part-time four-wheel drive.
How much does the Toyota FJ Cruiser EV cost?
There is no official FJ Cruiser EV MSRP. The Japanese Land Cruiser FJ VX is priced at ¥4,500,100 including Japanese consumption tax, while third-party estimates for a possible Compact Cruiser EV are not Toyota pricing.
Can I buy the new Land Cruiser FJ in the United States?
Toyota has not announced U.S. availability, a U.S. price, or a Toyota USA order page for the Land Cruiser FJ. Importing one independently requires separate verification of federal, state, customs, emissions, safety, registration, insurance, and warranty requirements.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Toyota has shown the design idea for a compact electric Cruiser, but it has not put a production FJ Cruiser EV on sale or published the specifications required for a conventional review. The real 2026 FJ-badged Toyota is the gasoline Land Cruiser FJ sold in Japan. For a U.S. buyer who wants a current Toyota EV, the bZ Woodland is the closest practical match; for traditional Toyota off-road hardware, look at the 4Runner or verify the difficult import requirements for the Japan-market Land Cruiser FJ.
