This is a component warranty, not a promise that every repair bill during the first five years will be paid. Routine service, normal deterioration and conditions caused by use, damage or an excluded event must be evaluated under the applicable handbook section. The service department must connect the symptom to a covered component and a qualifying defect.
Powertrain Limited Warranty
Hyundai’s U.S. materials describe 10 years/100,000 miles of powertrain coverage for eligible original owners of model-year 2004 and newer vehicles. This is not a promise to cover every component under the hood. The written warranty identifies the covered engine, transmission/transaxle and related powertrain parts, along with conditions and exclusions.
For a subsequent owner, powertrain components generally fall under the 5-year/60,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty rather than the original owner’s longer powertrain term. Commercial use is excluded from the powertrain limited warranty. Fleet, business, rental and other non-private uses should therefore be checked against the vehicle-specific handbook before relying on the consumer term.
The 10-year/100,000-mile figure also does not eliminate the need to prove that the failed part is one of the listed powertrain components and that the failure occurred under the warranty’s use and maintenance conditions. A dealer may need to test or disassemble the assembly before making that classification.
Ownership, leases and transfers
Keep the purchase, lease or transfer documents that establish who first owned the vehicle and when it entered service. A later private owner should not assume that the seller’s remaining 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain period follows the vehicle. Hyundai’s stated transfer distinction makes the first-owner status material, and the applicable handbook governs any exception or additional condition.
When buying a used Hyundai, ask for the original delivery date, the vehicle’s model year, the current odometer reading and any warranty repair history. How Hyundai decides whether a defect is covered
Coverage turns on four practical questions:
- What part failed? The component must be manufactured or originally installed by Hyundai and fall within the relevant category.
- What caused the condition? A defect in material or factory workmanship is the core trigger. The warranty does not convert every breakdown, noise or cosmetic change into a warrantable defect.
- How was the vehicle used and maintained? Normal use and maintenance are part of the coverage language. The handbook sets maintenance, operating and exclusion rules.
- Was the applicable limit still open? Compare both the qualified start date and odometer reading with the component-specific term; the first limit reached generally ends that coverage.
A dealer’s diagnosis is the initial practical determination. A dealer may need to inspect, test, scan or disassemble a component before it can classify the condition under the written warranty. Do not assume that a dashboard warning, a failed part or a repair estimate by itself establishes coverage.
An aftermarket part or modification is not automatically a cancellation of the entire vehicle warranty. The relevant question is whether it caused or contributed to the particular failure being presented. Ask the dealer to identify that connection, if one is claimed, rather than accepting a broad statement that all coverage has disappeared.
How to make a Hyundai warranty claim
1. Confirm the vehicle and timing
Locate the vehicle identification number, model year, delivery or in-service date and current mileage. Check the 2026 handbook for a new vehicle covered by that edition, or the handbook supplied with an earlier model year. Note whether the vehicle has changed owners, is leased, or has been used commercially, because those facts can alter eligibility.

2. Describe the symptom and identify the suspected system
Write down when the problem occurs, warning lights or messages, outside conditions, recent repairs and whether the vehicle is safe to drive. Distinguish a component failure from routine maintenance. The more precise the symptom history, the easier it is for the service department to reproduce the condition and select the correct warranty section.
For an intermittent problem, record dates, temperatures, speeds, charging conditions or other repeatable details and photograph warning messages when safe. Do not continue driving an unsafe or inoperable vehicle merely to reach an appointment; ask whether it should be transported.
3. Start with an authorized Hyundai dealer
Hyundai identifies authorized dealerships as the warranty-service channel. Call the service department, explain that you are requesting a warranty assessment, and provide the VIN and mileage. Ask what diagnostic appointment is required and whether the vehicle should be driven or transported.
At check-in, state the complaint in your own words and ask that it be written on the repair order. Request an explanation of which warranty category the dealer is evaluating. The dealer may need additional testing before it can approve or decline a repair.

4. Bring maintenance and ownership records
Bring invoices, work orders and parts receipts showing the date, mileage, service performed and vehicle identification where possible. Hyundai says accurate records can demonstrate that required maintenance was performed, including maintenance completed outside its dealer network. Independent servicing does not automatically void the warranty; however, a dealer may need evidence that required maintenance was done and may examine whether an outside repair caused or contributed to the failure.
5. Ask about transportation before authorizing work
Hyundai’s owner guidance says a service rental car may be available for warranty-covered repairs at participating dealers. Availability is dealer-dependent, so confirm eligibility, duration and any deposit or usage conditions before leaving the vehicle. A rental arrangement is a service convenience, not proof that Hyundai has accepted the claim.
6. Keep the repair order
Request a copy of the repair order showing the complaint, diagnostic findings, warranty decision, replaced parts and any reason for denial. Record the date and mileage at drop-off and pickup. If the symptom remains, return with the prior order so the dealer can evaluate whether the original condition was corrected.

Maintenance outside the dealer network
Hyundai’s FAQ guidance recognizes that owners may service vehicles somewhere other than an authorized dealer. The important protection is documentation: retain dated invoices, mileage, the work performed, fluids or parts used when listed, and any inspection results. Follow the maintenance schedule and retain evidence for as long as you own the vehicle.
A dealer can deny a particular repair if the evidence shows that an improper service, incorrect part, missed required maintenance or unrelated damage caused the failure. That is different from saying that every non-dealer service visit cancels the entire warranty. Ask the dealer to identify the component-specific term and the factual reason for any denial.
Roadside assistance is not the same as warranty coverage
Hyundai lists 5 years of roadside assistance with unlimited mileage. Roadside help can address events such as an inoperable vehicle or the need for towing, but the assistance program has its own eligibility and exclusions. Calling roadside assistance does not, by itself, establish that the underlying mechanical problem is warrantable.
The 2025 U.S. handbook separately states that towing to the nearest Hyundai dealership or authorized service location is covered under the powertrain warranty when an inoperable vehicle has a warrantable defect during the initial 5-year/60,000-mile period. Because towing language can vary by handbook and vehicle, confirm the applicable provision when arranging transport rather than assuming every tow is reimbursable.

Hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric Hyundai vehicles
The 2026 summary lists hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric direct-energy components at 10 years/100,000 miles. “Direct-energy components” is a defined warranty category, not a shorthand for every electrical part in the vehicle. A claim involving a traction battery, inverter, motor or charging-related component must be matched to the handbook’s exact definitions, conditions and exclusions.

Other systems in an electrified vehicle can have different terms. Paint, the 12-volt battery, air-conditioning refrigerant, emissions equipment and ordinary vehicle components remain governed by their own categories where applicable. Use the VIN-specific or model-year handbook rather than applying the electric-system term to unrelated repairs.
Corrosion, paint and appearance claims
Anti-perforation coverage is summarized as 7 years with unlimited mileage. That term concerns the corrosion-through condition defined by Hyundai. Surface rust, stone chips, environmental damage and cosmetic defects may be treated differently under the handbook’s definitions and exclusions.
Paint has a separate 3-year/36,000-mile summary term. Photograph the affected area, note when it appeared and avoid attempting a repair before inspection if you want the dealer to evaluate the original condition.

Emissions and federal coverage
The 2026 summary lists 8 years/80,000 miles for specified federal-emissions components. The word “specific” matters: the term applies to the parts enumerated in the emissions section, not automatically to every sensor, hose, catalyst-related item or drivability complaint. An emissions warning should be diagnosed promptly, and the repair order should identify the failed component and the warranty category used.

- Commercial use: The powertrain limited warranty excludes commercial use under Hyundai’s stated terms.
- Expired category: A vehicle can be within the general new-vehicle period while a shorter paint, battery, adjustment or refrigerant term has already ended.

If the dealer says a repair is not covered
Ask for the decision in writing or on the repair order. Request the precise handbook section, the diagnosed failed component, the evidence supporting the exclusion or expiration, and whether a customer-pay estimate is available. If you believe the diagnosis is incomplete, obtain a second inspection from another authorized Hyundai dealer and provide both repair orders and your maintenance records.
Warranty disputes can depend on the facts, the vehicle’s model year, the wording of the applicable handbook and state law. Keep communications, invoices, photographs and tow records.
