Tesla’s original early-2025 estimate became a first-half-2025 target, but the company’s reported milestone by June was only the first builds of a more affordable model; volume production was planned for the second half. Tesla later launched U.S. Standard trims of the Model 3 and Model Y, but its public updates do not establish that either was the exact unnamed vehicle promised in 2024.
How Tesla’s launch timeline changed
| Date | What Tesla said or reported | What the milestone means |
|---|---|---|
| April 23, 2024 | On its Q1 earnings call, CEO Elon Musk said, “So, we expect it to be more like the early 2025, if not late this year.” Tesla’s Q1 2024 shareholder update said the vehicles would combine aspects of its next-generation and current platforms and could be built on existing production lines. | An estimate that accelerated an earlier second-half-2025 production target—not a confirmed customer-delivery date. |
| January 29, 2025 | In its Q4 2024 earnings-call prepared remarks, Tesla management said it was “still on track to launch a more affordable model in the first half of 2025.” | A later, more specific target, still without a model name, price or specifications. |
| Q1 2025 | Tesla’s SEC filing identified the New Model Y as a Q1 launch and also discussed broader plans for new and more affordable products. | The filing does not explicitly identify the New Model Y as the unnamed affordable model. |
| June 2025 | Tesla’s Q2 update reported first builds of a more affordable model in June and planned volume production for the second half of 2025. | First builds were a production milestone, not evidence of volume output or customer deliveries by the end of the first half. |
| October 2025 | Tesla’s Q3 update reported U.S. launches of Model 3 Standard and Model Y Standard. | Named, lower-priced trims arrived later in the year, but Tesla did not explicitly connect them to the earlier unnamed promise. |
| By Q2 2026 | Tesla’s SEC filing described continued global rollout of more affordable Model 3 and Model Y trims. | The affordability effort continued beyond the initial 2025 milestones. |
Did Tesla launch the promised cheaper car in early 2025?
The public milestones do not show a broad customer launch of the unnamed affordable model in early 2025. Tesla’s April 2024 comment was a forward-looking estimate; by January 2025, management had framed the goal as launching a more affordable model in the first half. In its Q2 2025 update, Tesla reported first builds in June, while placing volume production in the second half.
That distinction matters: a first build shows that a vehicle has entered an initial build stage, but it does not establish that production has reached volume or that customers can take delivery. Tesla’s statements described plans and targets, not guaranteed dates.
Was the New Model Y the affordable model?
Tesla documented the New Model Y’s Q1 2025 launch, but the cited company materials do not explicitly equate it with the unnamed “more affordable model” from the earlier commitment. Treating the two as the same vehicle would go beyond what those updates establish.

What were the later Model 3 Standard and Model Y Standard prices?
In its Q3 2025 investor update, Tesla reported October U.S. starting prices of $36,990 for Model 3 Standard and $39,990 for Model Y Standard, with more than 300 miles of range for each. These are company-reported figures for those U.S. launches at that time; they are not current quotes or worldwide prices, and Tesla’s update does not establish that either trim was the exact model described in the 2024 promise.

The statements trace an evolving product plan rather than one fully specified car with a publicly confirmed name, price and delivery date. In 2024, Tesla described vehicles using elements of both its current and next-generation platforms and said they could be made on existing lines. Later updates reported first builds of an unnamed affordable model, then named lower-priced Standard versions of two existing model lines, followed by continued global rollout of more affordable Model 3 and Model Y trims.
