The source describes the scores as reflecting expected longevity, including the likelihood of reaching 200,000 miles.

A leading model-level score does not automatically identify the best buy at every price. iSeeCars’ separate 2026 used-car rankings by budget name different reliability leaders in different price brackets:

Reliability rankings versus “best used” rankings
iSeeCars also publishes a “best used” ranking that combines reliability with resale value and safety. For example, its 2026 list names the 2020 Toyota Highlander as the best used midsize SUV below $30,000. That is a composite result, not the same thing as a pure reliability ranking. The iSeeCars methodology says the overall score incorporates all three dimensions and uses vehicle data alongside NHTSA and IIHS safety ratings.
When comparing a pair of listings, first decide which question you are answering: which model scores highest for expected longevity, which fits a budget, or which earns the strongest combined reliability, resale, and safety result. Those measures answer different questions.

What a model score cannot tell you
A broad model score is not a condition report for an individual SUV. It does not establish that a specific model year, powertrain, or used example is trouble-free. A vehicle’s maintenance, mileage, accident history, title status, and present mechanical condition still matter.
For historical context, an Edmunds recommendation republished by the Associated Press identified 2014–2019 Toyota Highlanders as used midsize SUV options and highlighted improvements in 2017–2019 models, including power, fuel efficiency, and added driver-assistance features. Checks to make before buying a specific SUV
- Check for open recalls. Search the vehicle identification number (VIN) or license plate with NHTSA’s recall lookup. NHTSA’s SaferCar app can also provide recall alerts. A model-level rating cannot show whether an individual vehicle has an unrepaired recall.
- Verify the mileage. Compare the odometer with title, service, and inspection records, and request a vehicle history report to look for discrepancies. NHTSA explains these steps in its odometer-fraud guidance.
- Review history and service documentation. Check the title and available maintenance records, and ask about gaps or inconsistencies before proceeding.
- Arrange an independent condition inspection. Have a qualified professional examine the actual vehicle. NHTSA’s CPO inspection checklist illustrates checks such as vehicle identity, recalls, tires, and equipment; it is not a universal standard for independent pre-purchase inspections.
- Confirm it suits your needs. Verify seating, cargo space, fuel use, and equipment for the exact model year and configuration you are considering rather than inferring those details from a reliability rank.
