Its appeal rests on the engine’s distinctive firing order, a rear torque splitter designed to vary power between the rear wheels, and the choice between road-oriented tires and a track-focused factory option.
What makes the Audi RS 3 five-cylinder special?
The engine is the RS 3’s defining feature. Audi’s international update release describes a 2.5-liter TFSI inline-five producing 294 kW (400 PS) and 500 Nm. Audi gives its firing order as 1-2-4-5-3, an unusual sequence that helps distinguish the engine’s character from the four-cylinder engines common in compact performance cars. Audi New Zealand’s 2026 RS 3 Sedan specification sheet also lists a 2,480 cc inline-five and quotes the same power and torque figures for that market.
Audi quotes 0–100 km/h in 3.8 seconds for the updated RS 3 in its 2024 international release. The New Zealand sheet lists that acceleration figure for its 2026 Sedan. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results, and should not be assumed to describe every regional configuration.
How does the RS 3 torque splitter work?
Audi says the rear torque splitter can vary torque distribution between the rear wheels. Rather than treating it as a standalone handling trick, Audi describes it as part of a broader system that also involves brake torque vectoring, stability control, adaptive dampers and the driving dynamics controller. The intended effect, according to Audi, is to help the car turn with greater agility while maintaining stability.

In its June 6, 2025 RS 3 release, Audi wrote: “The fully variable torque distribution on the rear axle enables not only increased agility but also more stability – an advantage in everyday driving as well as on the racetrack.” This is Audi’s description of the system’s benefits, not an independent assessment.
How fast is the 2026 Audi RS 3?
Audi’s international 2024 update release quotes 3.8 seconds for 0–100 km/h. Separately, Audi reported that driver Frank Stippler completed the Nürburgring Nordschleife in the updated RS 3 in 7:33.123 in August 2024. That is a manufacturer-reported lap time; it is not an independent comparison with other cars, and it does not establish how the RS 3 will perform on a different circuit or in different conditions.

Which tires does the RS 3 use?
Audi’s June 2025 description of the updated RS 3 identifies the Pirelli P Zero R as the standard tire and gives sizes of 265/30 at the front and 245/35 at the rear. Because those details refer to the RS 3 described in that release, they should not be treated as a universal fitment for every 2026 car or market. Check the vehicle’s tire placard and the correct specification for its wheels before buying replacements.

Is the 2026 RS 3 a Sedan or Sportback?

Audi’s international material covers both Sedan and Sportback forms, while the 2026 specification sheet cited here is specifically for the New Zealand RS 3 Sedan. Check the local Audi market’s listing for the body style, equipment and specifications actually offered where you intend to buy.

Audi announced the RS 3 competition limited in 2026 as a separate special edition marking 50 years of the five-cylinder engine. Audi says production is limited to 750 cars.
