Waymo is already taking public riders in Nashville. It began inviting riders on April 7, 2026, then opened service to anyone within its operating area on June 25. The service initially covers about 60 square miles, including areas such as downtown, 12 South, Midtown and East Nashville. To request a ride, use the Waymo app and check that both your pickup and destination are inside the live service area.

From announcement to public rides: the timeline

The original claim that Waymo was headed to Nashville was confirmed when Waymo and Lyft announced their partnership on September 17, 2025. The plan was for Waymo to provide autonomous vehicles and operate the ride service, with Lyft’s Flexdrive subsidiary supporting fleet management. Waymo’s announcement said rides were planned for 2026.

  • September 17, 2025: Waymo and Lyft announced the Nashville partnership.
  • April 7, 2026: Waymo began inviting the first public riders on a rolling basis. Waymo’s launch update described the initial service area and neighborhoods.
  • June 25, 2026: Service opened to anyone in the operating area through the Waymo app, with no invite code required, according to Waymo’s update.
  • Later in 2026: Waymo said Lyft-app booking was planned. The reviewed official announcements do not confirm that Nashville Lyft booking has launched.

So the useful question now is not whether Waymo is coming, but whether it can serve your particular trip.

Where Waymo operates in Nashville

Waymo described its initial Nashville coverage as approximately 60 square miles, including Broadway and downtown entertainment districts, 12 South, Midtown and East Nashville. This is a geofenced service area, not all of Nashville, Davidson County or the wider metro area. The boundary can change, so check the current service information or enter both trip points in the Waymo app before making plans. Seeing a Waymo vehicle elsewhere does not mean a ride can be requested there.

If the app says a trip is unavailable: try a legal pickup point and destination inside the coverage boundary. At crowded venues, the app may direct you to a designated pickup spot rather than the exact curb you entered. Follow its pickup instructions and wait somewhere that does not obstruct traffic.

How to book a Nashville Waymo ride

  1. Download the Waymo app and create an account or sign in.
  2. Enter your pickup location and destination. Both must be within the currently available service area.
  3. Review the pickup details and the fare shown in the app before requesting the trip.
  4. Request the ride and follow the app’s instructions to meet the vehicle.
  5. For help during the trip, use the app or the in-car controls.

Waymo describes its rides as fully autonomous: there is no human driver in the front seat. That does not establish that there is no human support behind the scenes; autonomous driving and remote assistance are different things. For current ride basics, see Waymo’s FAQ.

Waymo, Lyft and Uber are not interchangeable booking options

In the Nashville partnership, Waymo supplies the autonomous-driving service and vehicles, while Lyft’s Flexdrive supports fleet management. At public launch, riders booked through the Waymo app. Waymo said access through the Lyft app was expected later in 2026, but that plan is not proof that the integration is live. Check Lyft’s app for current availability rather than assuming a Lyft request will match you with a Waymo.

Nor should Nashville riders assume they can book a Waymo through Uber. Waymo’s Uber integration page identifies Austin and Atlanta, not Nashville, for that arrangement.

How much does a ride cost?

There is no fixed Nashville fare table in the reviewed official sources. Waymo says the app shows the trip cost before you book; the quoted fare can vary with the route, time, demand and ride conditions. Compare the actual quote for your trip with Lyft, Uber, a taxi or transit if price matters. A fair comparison uses the same origin, destination, time and applicable fees. There is no basis here to say Waymo is generally cheaper or more expensive than conventional rideshare.

Is Waymo available at Nashville International Airport?

Airport status: Waymo has said it is testing at Nashville International Airport (BNA), but its launch announcements described passenger airport service as a future goal, not a confirmed general service. Do not count on Waymo for a flight unless the app accepts your specific BNA pickup or drop-off. Testing at the airport is not the same as passenger rides being available.

What Waymo says about safety

Waymo says its Driver was involved in 94% fewer crashes causing serious or fatal injuries than human drivers in the same conditions. The company also says its latest safety analysis covered more than 220 million fully autonomous miles through the end of March 2026. These are Waymo-reported figures, not a guarantee that a ride is risk-free or an independent finding about Nashville trips. See Waymo’s Nashville update for its claims and context.

As with any ride service, conditions can disrupt a trip. Bad weather, road closures, major events and unusual traffic may delay, reroute or make service unavailable. For concerts or busy downtown pickup areas, allow extra time and follow the app’s directions.

Is Waymo a practical choice for your trip?

Waymo may suit riders who want a driverless ride, are comfortable using app-based support and have both trip points inside the service area. It may also appeal to people who prefer not to interact with a driver. Its limits matter: the geofence is narrower than ordinary rideshare coverage, airport trips are not confirmed by the launch announcements, and fares need to be compared in real time.

Before relying on it, check the pickup and destination, the suggested pickup point, the quoted fare, passenger and luggage needs, and whether the trip involves BNA or a crowded event venue. If you need a child seat, wheelchair accommodation, assistance-animal arrangements or a specific boarding feature, verify the current details with Waymo before booking; the reviewed launch materials do not establish Nashville-specific policies for those needs. They likewise do not establish rules for unaccompanied minors or a complete local lost-item and emergency procedure, so use current in-app help rather than assuming standard rideshare rules apply.

What could change next

Waymo has described Lyft-app booking and airport service as future possibilities, but neither should be treated as available until confirmed in the relevant app or by a later official announcement. Coverage may also expand. For now, the live Waymo app is the practical check for whether a particular Nashville trip can be booked and at what price.
