For a used Volkswagen Atlas shortlist, start with 2023, then consider 2020 or 2022—but treat those model-year signals as screening tools, not guarantees. Consumer Reports describes the 2023 Atlas as more reliable than other vehicles from its model year, while 2020 and 2022 are about average. The available evidence is less favorable for 2018–2019 and 2024. The exact vehicle’s VIN recall status, maintenance records, mileage, accident history and condition matter more than a year designation alone.
What the available reliability ratings say
Consumer Reports’ reliability descriptions are relative comparisons with other vehicles from the same model year. They do not establish a failure rate for every Atlas, and a favorable description cannot prove that a particular used vehicle is sound.

Which Atlas years deserve priority when shopping?
2023: the strongest surfaced signal
Among the compared years, 2023 is the most encouraging because Consumer Reports describes it as more reliable than other vehicles from the same model year. That wording is a relative assessment, so it should not be read as proof that 2023 is mechanically superior to every 2020 or 2022 Atlas. Check the VIN for open campaigns and confirm that scheduled maintenance was performed.
2020 and 2022: sensible middle-ground candidates
Both years are described as about average for their respective model years. They are reasonable places to begin a search when price, mileage and condition are competitive. “Average” is not the same as trouble-free; service documentation and an independent inspection remain essential.

2018–2019: the years requiring the most skepticism
The available survey summary places 2018–2019 in a much-worse-than-average reliability group, and the 2019 page describes that year as less reliable than same-year peers. A well-maintained example can still be worth evaluating, but the purchase case should depend on documented repairs, a clean history and a favorable inspection—not on a low asking price alone.

Consumer Reports characterizes the 2024 Atlas as less reliable than its same-year peers. That does not predict the condition of an individual vehicle, but it does remove the assumption that a newer model year automatically lowers risk.

Recall 23V-215: a required check on certain 2018–2020 Atlases
NHTSA recall 23V-215 covers certain 2018–2020 Atlas vehicles with a passenger occupant detection system wiring problem. If a cable contact fault is detected, the system can register a malfunction and deactivate the front passenger airbag. Volkswagen’s filing says dealers will replace the PODS sensor mat and wiring harness free of charge for affected vehicles. Until repair, the filing advises avoiding the front passenger seat where possible.
The recall population combines specified Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport vehicles; the figure of 143,053 potentially involved vehicles is not an Atlas failure rate. Read the NHTSA recall report for the campaign details.

How to verify a vehicle before paying
- Record the vehicle identification number (VIN) from the dashboard and title or registration.
- Run that VIN through NHTSA’s current recall lookup; model-year coverage alone does not establish that this vehicle is included.
- Ask the seller for repair orders or a dealer printout showing whether recall 23V-215, if applicable, was completed.
- Have an independent technician confirm the repair and inspect the airbag system before closing the deal.
Recall totals shown on Consumer Reports pages are snapshots from when those pages were captured. They can change and are not a substitute for a current VIN-level search. NHTSA’s 2023 annual recall report also directs owners and buyers to the agency’s VIN lookup.
Evaluate the individual Atlas, not just the badge
Maintenance and mileage
Request receipts or service-history records, confirm that scheduled services match the vehicle’s mileage, and be cautious when a seller cannot document basic maintenance. Mileage is useful context, but a higher-mileage Atlas with consistent records can be a safer purchase than a neglected low-mileage example.
Accident, title and ownership history
Check for branded titles, flood or rental history, repeated ownership changes and collision repairs. Inspect panel alignment, paint consistency, warning lights and evidence of water intrusion. A pre-purchase inspection should include a scan for stored diagnostic trouble codes and a road test from a cold start.
Price and condition
Compare similarly equipped vehicles rather than relying on model-year averages. A substantial discount is not compensation for unresolved safety recalls, missing maintenance records or major accident history.
