The Volvo 850 T-5R and 850 R are closely related turbocharged five-cylinder performance cars, but they are not the same edition. The R followed as a continuing model
Volvo’s overview says the 850 R followed the T-5R in 1995. In the October 1995 UK press information, Volvo explicitly says, “The 850R becomes a permanent feature in the 850 line-up.” That change in status is as important as the extra horsepower: the T-5R was framed as a special allocation, whereas the R was integrated into the continuing 850 range.
Engine and power: what changed mechanically?
Both use the 2.3-litre turbocharged five-cylinder concept
The UK T-5R release identifies a 2.3-litre, five-cylinder turbocharged engine. The R press information also describes a 2.3-litre five-cylinder engine. The 10-unit difference between the 240-hp T-5R figure and the 250-bhp R figure is a source-level comparison, not a reason to assume that every dynamometer, market conversion or later modification will show exactly the same gap. The overview uses “hp,” while the UK release uses “bhp,” so retain the original units when quoting the figures.
Performance figures: what can and cannot be compared

What is known about the R’s production status
The October 1995 UK material says the R became a permanent feature in the 850 line-up, but it does not provide an equivalent worldwide production total. The retrieved T-5R and R releases do not establish a complete body-style matrix for every country, nor do they document every difference in suspension, differential, transmission or interior equipment. Do not turn an unverified body-style or option assumption into an identification rule.
Volvo’s general 850 press material explains that it describes the international range, that features might be optional and that specifications can vary by country. A viewing should begin with provenance rather than visual drama. Ask for the original registration history, invoices, import paperwork and any period brochure or order sheet. How to read the horsepower figures
The figures are not written in identical form. Volvo’s overview uses “hp” for the T-5R, while Volvo Car UK’s October 1995 material uses “bhp” and adds the engine speed of 5,400 rpm for the R. Preserve that wording when making a careful comparison. The safe conclusion is that Volvo published 240 hp for the T-5R and 250 bhp at 5,400 rpm for the R in the cited documents.
It is also unwise to convert the figures into a promised real-world gap. A modern dyno reading, an engine modified during its life or a test conducted under different conditions will not reproduce a period press number exactly. The useful historical point is the direction of change and the hardware Volvo named, not a claim that every surviving R will make exactly ten more units than every surviving T-5R.
What the documents do not establish

Buying and collecting implications
For a collector, the T-5R’s appeal is its first-edition status and limited-allocation story. The R offers the later, more developed specification and the historical significance of becoming a continuing model. Those are different kinds of desirability, so a buyer should decide whether originality, documented provenance, the factory color and wheels, or the revised engine hardware matters most before comparing prices.
Price cannot be inferred from the 2,500 figure alone. The available documents do not supply market values, auction results or a verified production census for either version.
