Verizon shut down Hum on December 31, 2025: What happened to its Google Assistant car accessory

Verizon Hum is no longer shutting down—it already shut down. Verizon ended Hum service on December 31, 2025. The shutdown covered both Hum+ and Humx, including the Hum app and website, vehicle diagnostics, location services, driving history, Crash Response, Roadside Assistance, speed and boundary alerts, and Hum-specific Google Assistant commands. Humx features such as the in-car Wi-Fi hotspot and NumberShare also ended.

Verizon said customers did not need to return their physical Hum hardware, but the devices are not useful as supported connected-car products now. Verizon’s current Hum website says the products and services are unavailable, and its unsupported-device list includes first- and second-generation Hum+ and Humx devices.

What happened to Verizon Hum?

Verizon discontinued Hum at the end of 2025. The original public announcement appeared on October 1, 2025, and service continued only through December 31, 2025. Verizon’s customer notice, reproduced by 9to5Google, said customers would be billed through that date and could download their driving history and other Hum data until then.

That deadline has passed. As of August 10, 2026, there is no public Verizon activation or migration path for an existing Hum device, including a used one. The service was cloud- and cellular-dependent, so the OBD reader cannot simply be moved to another carrier and made operational by changing a SIM.

Hum was more than a Google Assistant accessory

Hum was an aftermarket connected-car system designed to add telematics to older vehicles that did not have factory-connected services. A typical setup used an OBD-II reader plugged into the vehicle, a smartphone app, and, depending on the model and purchase date, a speaker mounted near the driver.

Its functions included:

  • Vehicle diagnostics and maintenance information.
  • Vehicle location, trip information, and driving history.
  • Speed and boundary alerts.
  • Crash Response and emergency assistance.
  • Roadside Assistance and a mechanics hotline.
  • Stolen-vehicle assistance.
  • Safety scoring.
  • An in-car Wi-Fi hotspot on Humx.
  • NumberShare and hands-free calling on eligible Humx configurations.
  • Google Assistant access and Hum-specific voice commands.

Verizon introduced the product as Verizon Vehicle in January 2015 and announced commercial availability of Hum on August 26, 2015. That distinction matters: Hum itself did not launch in 2019. The 2019 event was the addition of Google Assistant-connected features. Verizon’s original product announcement is available through PR Newswire.

Hum+ versus Humx

Hum+ was the standard service tier, generally built around the OBD reader and mobile app. After account linking, Hum+ customers could use Hum Actions through Google Assistant.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Humx was the higher-end tier. Depending on the generation and purchase date, it added a wireless speaker, crash-response features, in-car Wi-Fi, and NumberShare. The hardware was not uniform across all Humx devices. Hum’s FAQ said Humx units purchased on or after June 20, 2021 no longer had built-in speaker functionality, although account linking and Hum Actions remained available while the service was active. Hum’s terms of service also said some Hum+ systems purchased before June 30, 2018 could have included a Hum+ speaker.

Why Hum was described as a Google Assistant car accessory

Verizon announced the Hum-and-Google Assistant integration on January 7, 2019. It had two separate parts:

  1. A built-in Assistant experience on eligible Humx speakers. A driver could press the speaker’s button and speak to Google Assistant from the vehicle.
  2. Hum Actions through other Assistant devices. After linking Hum and Google accounts, a customer could use a phone, tablet, Google Home device, or another Google Assistant device to ask Hum-specific questions.

Historical examples included asking Hum to locate the car, set a 45-mph speed alert, report how much fuel remained, or provide service reminders and trip history. Verizon’s launch announcement lists examples of the integration in its 2019 PR Newswire release.

The old Humx setup process required opening the Hum app, choosing Google Assistant from the side menu, selecting Begin Set Up, and following the instructions for a supported speaker. Users then returned to the Google Assistant section, selected Hum Actions Setup, signed in to Google, chose Link, signed in to Hum, and tested a command such as asking how much gas was left. The Humx quick-start guide documents that historical process, but it is no longer an activation solution because the Hum app and backend service are gone.

What stopped working after December 31, 2025?

The shutdown affected the connected service rather than merely disabling one speaker feature. The practical status of the main functions is:

Hum billing Verizon said billing would end after December 31, 2025

The physical device may still power on or show lights, but that should not be confused with a working Hum subscription. Verizon lists Hum+ and Humx first- and second-generation hardware as unsupported. There is no official post-shutdown path to activate the device, transfer it to another owner, or use it with another carrier.

What happened to Hum customer data?

Hum collected considerably more than a simple GPS location. Verizon’s Hum privacy policy described information from the OBD reader such as the vehicle’s make, model, color, year, vehicle identification number, performance and maintenance characteristics, trip distances, acceleration, deceleration, turning, speed, revolutions per minute, and vehicle location and use information. The mobile app could also collect the phone’s location when the user granted permission.

When a customer linked Hum with Google Assistant, Verizon said Hum device information—including vehicle performance, maintenance, and location information—could be shared with Google under Google’s terms and privacy policy. While Hum was active, users could stop that sharing through Hum settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can former users download their driving history?

Publicly, no. Verizon’s shutdown notice set December 31, 2025 as the final date to download driving history and other Hum data. Verizon said the data would be securely and permanently deleted after that date. That is Verizon’s stated policy; the available public sources do not provide an independent audit confirming that deletion.

No public recovery procedure has been identified for former users who missed the deadline. Verizon’s older privacy materials described privacy inquiries and a Privacy Dashboard, but those mechanisms should not be treated as a guaranteed way to recover Hum history after service termination. Deleting the Hum app also should not be assumed to have deleted Verizon’s stored data.

What if Verizon charged me after the cutoff?

Compare the charge with the December 31, 2025 service end date, your final bill, and any equipment-payment arrangement. The reproduced customer notice says billing would stop after December 31, but it does not establish a universal refund policy for every prepaid subscription, equipment payment, early-termination fee, or billing error. If a Hum charge appeared after the cutoff, contact Verizon and keep the bill, account number, and date of the charge.

Did Google Assistant or Gemini cause the shutdown?

There is no public evidence that Verizon ended Hum specifically because Google Assistant was being replaced by Gemini. Verizon’s public notice gave the shutdown date and listed the affected services, but did not provide a detailed strategic explanation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google’s transition from Assistant toward Gemini is relevant industry context, not a confirmed explanation for Hum’s closure. Google’s current Android Auto documentation describes Gemini and Google Assistant being available for compatible in-car tasks, while Google has also described its broader Gemini direction for Android Auto and cars with Google built-in.

In other words, Hum’s December 2025 shutdown and Google’s Assistant-to-Gemini transition are separate documented events. It would be inaccurate to say that Google Assistant killed Hum or that Android Auto made Hum obsolete unless Verizon provides a direct statement establishing that cause.

Verizon’s suggested replacement: Verizon Family

Verizon’s current Hum page directs former customers toward Verizon Family, especially Verizon Family Plus, and separately toward Verizon Roadside Assistance. Family can replace some of Hum’s family-safety functions, but it is not a one-for-one Hum replacement.

What Verizon Family can do

  • Share and monitor family-member locations.
  • Provide Driving Insights.
  • Send potential-crash notifications.
  • Set family location alerts.
  • Provide Roadside Assistance through Family Plus.
  • Offer 24/7 Assist professional monitoring on eligible Plus subscriptions.
  • Provide Family Line and parental-control features.

Verizon Family is phone-based. Its driving features use the participating phone’s location, motion sensors, phone-use information, GPS, and an internet connection. It does not read vehicle data through the OBD-II port, provide Hum’s vehicle diagnostics, create a dedicated vehicle-installed cellular connection, reproduce the Humx speaker, or provide a dedicated in-car Wi-Fi hotspot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That means Verizon Family may not track a vehicle accurately if the participating phone is left at home, left in another vehicle, turned off, out of battery, missing permissions, unable to obtain GPS, or without an internet connection.

Verizon Family crash detection does not automatically call 911

This is an important safety distinction. Verizon says Family crash detection sends a notification to the app, but does not automatically contact or dispatch 911 or another emergency service. A potential-crash notification is therefore not equivalent to Hum Crash Response or to a monitored emergency-response service.

Verizon Family pricing and eligibility

Verizon’s U.S. support pages listed the following as of August 2026:

  • Verizon Family: included with a standard Verizon monthly mobile account or Gizmo Watch service.
  • Verizon Family Plus: $14.99 per month with legacy mobile plans.
  • Verizon Family Plus Perk: $10 per month with eligible myPlan accounts.
  • Verizon Family Plus: included with the new Unlimited Ultimate plan under the conditions Verizon lists.

Compatible Android or iOS devices are required. Plan names, prices, and eligibility can change, so check Verizon’s Family FAQ and Family Plus Perk FAQ before subscribing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Roadside coverage is limited

Verizon Family Plus roadside coverage includes up to four service claims per membership year. Listed services include battery jump-starts, fuel delivery, flat-tire assistance, lockout assistance, and towing up to 10 miles. Fuel delivery is limited to two gallons, and the customer pays for the fuel.

The service is supplied by third-party providers and has exclusions. It does not restore Hum’s diagnostics, vehicle location, Wi-Fi, Google Assistant functions, or vehicle-installed cellular connection. The detailed limitations are in Verizon’s roadside-assistance terms.

  • Vehicle location tracking.
  • In-car Wi-Fi.
  • Vehicle-health information.
  • Location history.
  • Roadside assistance through AAA.
  • Integration with the T-Life app.

T-Mobile is moving SyncUP DRIVE functionality from its dedicated app into T-Life. Some older SyncUP DRIVE devices are not compatible with T-Life and must be replaced at a T-Mobile store; T-Mobile says those replacement devices are free.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

The trade-offs are substantial: SyncUP DRIVE requires T-Mobile’s ecosystem and a compatible device and vehicle, and the device is locked to the T-Mobile network. It does not restore Hum Actions or turn into a Google Assistant Hum replacement. Pricing and account requirements should be checked directly with T-Mobile because the product’s pages and offers have changed.

Bouncie: straightforward OBD tracking and diagnostics

Bouncie is a current U.S. OBD2 vehicle tracker aimed at location, trips, driving events, vehicle diagnostics, geofences, speed monitoring, accident detection, and notifications.

Bouncie’s listed pricing as of August 2026 was:

  • $89.99 one-time device charge.
  • $9.65 per month for one device.
  • $8.35 per device per month with three or more devices.

Bouncie says there are no contracts or activation fees, but each active device requires a subscription. Prices can change, so verify the current offer before buying.

Bouncie is not a complete Hum substitute. Its FAQ says it does not provide a Wi-Fi connection, and it does not remotely start, stop, unlock, or otherwise control the vehicle or record audio. Its terms also say roadside assistance is no longer provided for new accounts or new vehicles enrolled from January 1, 2024. Read the current Bouncie FAQ and terms of service before treating it as a roadside replacement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and factory-connected systems

If the main reason you used Hum was hands-free voice control, the practical replacement may already be in your vehicle. Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, or the automaker’s factory-connected system can handle calls, messages, navigation, and media without a Hum-specific accessory.

Google says compatible cars can use Gemini or Google Assistant through Android Auto for calls, messages, directions, and media. This replaces the voice-interface part of Hum, not vehicle tracking, OBD diagnostics, crash response, roadside assistance, or a dedicated hotspot.

For newer vehicles, the automaker’s own connected-car service may be the better choice for remote access, vehicle health, location, and emergency services. Check whether the service is included with the vehicle, requires a trial or subscription, supports the vehicle’s model year, and can be transferred when the car is sold.

What to check before buying a replacement

  • Vehicle compatibility: Confirm the model year, OBD-II compatibility, and the location of the diagnostic port.
  • Network support: Check 4G/LTE support, coverage where the vehicle is driven, and whether the device is locked to a carrier.
  • Battery behavior: Ask whether the device draws power while the vehicle is parked and whether it can contribute to battery drain.
  • Account requirements: Determine whether a Verizon, T-Mobile, or other carrier account is mandatory.
  • Transferability: Check whether the device can be transferred to another vehicle or owner.
  • Total cost: Include the device, monthly or annual subscription, activation fee, equipment payments, and cancellation terms.
  • Emergency response: Find out whether a crash event sends an app notification, reaches a call center, calls a contact, or actually contacts emergency services.
  • Data control: Look for data-export options, retention periods, sharing with third parties, and account-deletion procedures.
  • Feature boundaries: Verify whether the product includes diagnostics, location, hotspot service, voice calling, crash alerts, and roadside assistance—or only one or two of those functions.

Common Hum shutdown questions

Can I use Hum with another carrier?

Do not assume so. Hum depended on Verizon’s cellular service, app, backend systems, and account infrastructure. No official instructions describe converting a post-shutdown Hum device into a carrier-independent tracker.

Can the old Hum speaker still work as a normal Bluetooth speaker?

The public shutdown materials do not establish that. Do not assume the speaker is either fully useless or still functional as a standalone Bluetooth product without testing the exact model. Its connected Hum functions are unavailable.

Will Verizon Family track a car when the phone is not inside it?

Not in the same way Hum did. Verizon Family’s driving features depend on the participating phone’s location, sensors, permissions, battery, GPS, and internet connection. A phone left at home or in another vehicle will not provide reliable tracking of the Hum-equipped car.

Does Verizon Family call 911 after a crash?

No. Verizon says Family crash detection sends an app notification and does not automatically contact or dispatch 911 or another emergency service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will Verizon automatically refund Hum payments?

Do not assume that it will. Verizon said billing would end after December 31, 2025, but the public notice does not establish a universal refund rule for every account situation. Contact Verizon if you were billed for Hum after the cutoff or if your final bill does not match your account terms.

Practical checklist for former Hum customers

  1. Review Verizon bills and account records for Hum charges dated after December 31, 2025.
  2. Do not pay for or buy used Hum hardware expecting activation.
  3. Recycle the device through an electronics-recycling program rather than putting it in household trash. Verizon said no return was required.
  4. Choose a replacement based on the specific function you lost: tracking, diagnostics, crash alerts, roadside assistance, Wi-Fi, voice control, or family monitoring.
  5. Before subscribing, verify compatibility, network requirements, battery impact, pricing, cancellation terms, emergency-response behavior, and data-export and retention policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

When did Verizon Hum officially shut down?

Verizon ended Hum service on December 31, 2025. The Hum app and website are no longer active, and both Hum+ and Humx devices are listed as unsupported.

What is the closest replacement for Hum?

There is no single one-for-one replacement. T-Mobile SyncUP DRIVE is closest to Hum’s OBD-connected hardware model, Bouncie focuses on OBD tracking and diagnostics, Verizon Family Plus covers some phone-based family-safety and roadside needs, and Android Auto or Apple CarPlay replaces the hands-free voice and media role.

Can I still download my Hum driving history?

Publicly, no. Verizon’s notice set December 31, 2025 as the final download date and said the data would be securely and permanently deleted afterward. No public recovery procedure has been identified.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Was Hum shut down because Google Assistant is becoming Gemini?

That has not been established. Google’s Gemini transition is relevant industry context, but Verizon’s shutdown notice did not say it was the reason Hum ended.

The Bottom Line

Verizon Hum is finished as a connected-car service. The December 31, 2025 cutoff ended Hum+ and Humx tracking, diagnostics, safety, roadside, app, Wi-Fi, NumberShare, and Hum-specific Google Assistant functions. The hardware does not need to be returned, but it is not a supported bargain for used-car buyers. Replace the individual feature you need rather than assuming Verizon Family, Bouncie, SyncUP DRIVE, or Android Auto reproduces the entire Hum package.
