iOS 26 makes CarPlay more useful without requiring CarPlay Ultra. The biggest everyday improvements are widgets, Live Activities, better Messages controls, a compact incoming-call view, Smart Display Zoom, and multitouch map gestures on supported vehicles. The Liquid Glass redesign is the most visible change, while CarPlay Ultra vehicle controls and AirPlay video remain dependent on automaker support.
As of August 10, 2026, the current public release is iOS 26.6, released July 27, 2026. The main CarPlay changes arrived with iOS 26; iOS 26.4 later added an Ambient Music widget and platform support for voice-based conversational CarPlay apps. You can confirm the current release in Apple’s security releases list.
This guide separates features available on ordinary CarPlay from those that require a particular screen, app, vehicle, or CarPlay Ultra integration.

- Install any available infotainment or head-unit firmware update from the vehicle manufacturer.
- For wired CarPlay, use the vehicle’s supported USB port and a suitable cable. Some cars have multiple USB ports, but only one may support CarPlay.
- For wireless CarPlay, make sure both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are enabled on the iPhone. Apple also recommends checking that the vehicle is in wireless or Bluetooth pairing mode.
- Confirm that the exact vehicle, trim, country, and infotainment system support CarPlay. Compatibility with one model year or trim does not guarantee compatibility with every version of the same car. Check Apple’s CarPlay vehicle list, then verify firmware support with the automaker.
Do not assume that every iPhone capable of running iOS 26 will receive every CarPlay function. Apple notes that features can vary by iPhone model, region, language, carrier, app, vehicle, and display configuration.

1. Liquid Glass gives CarPlay a new look
What it does
iOS 26 extends Apple’s Liquid Glass design language to CarPlay. The Home screen, Dashboard, icons, and other interface elements use a more translucent, layered appearance intended to make the iPhone and in-car interface feel more consistent.
CarPlay also supports different icon appearances, including light, dark, and clear styles. The exact choices and visual result can vary with the vehicle display and automaker implementation. Apple’s iOS 26 feature summary documents the new CarPlay design and icon appearance options.
How to try it
- Connect the iPhone to CarPlay.
- Compare the Home screen, Dashboard, and app icons with the previous CarPlay interface.
- Open the available CarPlay appearance or icon controls and try the light, dark, or clear style if your system exposes them.
What to expect
This is primarily a visual refresh rather than a major functional upgrade. It does not make an older vehicle’s screen larger, add vehicle controls, or turn standard CarPlay into CarPlay Ultra. CarPlay Ultra can add automaker-specific themes, gauges, and layouts that ordinary CarPlay does not have.

What they do
Widgets are now available in regular CarPlay, not only CarPlay Ultra. They appear beside or to the left of the CarPlay Dashboard and can show information from compatible iPhone apps without opening the full app. On touchscreen vehicles, some widgets can also be interactive.
An app does not necessarily need a dedicated CarPlay app to provide a widget. Developers can mark suitable widgets for in-car use, while widgets that are inappropriate for driving can be excluded or limited. That means widget availability is controlled by the individual app as well as by iOS and CarPlay.
How to add and arrange widgets
Make these changes while parked:
- Open Settings on the iPhone.
- Tap General.
- Tap CarPlay.
- Select your vehicle.
- Tap Widgets.
- Tap Add Widgets and follow the onscreen instructions.
To reorder or remove them, return to Settings > General > CarPlay > [your vehicle] > Widgets. Drag the reorder control or tap the remove button. The same area may include Smart Rotate and Widget Suggestions.
The number of visible widgets or widget stacks depends on the size and shape of the CarPlay display. Useful examples can include Calendar appointments, weather, Home controls, battery or charging information, media shortcuts, and app-specific information. These are examples, not guaranteed built-in choices for every car or iPhone.
If Widgets is missing
Confirm that the iPhone has connected to the vehicle at least once after the update, then check the vehicle-specific CarPlay settings again. Update the app that should provide the widget and verify that the developer supports a CarPlay-compatible widget. Reconnect CarPlay after changing the list. If the Widgets menu itself is absent, check iOS, vehicle firmware, and screen compatibility before assuming the system is defective. Apple’s widget instructions provide the current configuration path.

3. Live Activities put changing information on the Dashboard
What they do
Widgets are persistent panels that you choose. Live Activities are different: they are temporary, event-driven updates from an app that has an active status to report.
In CarPlay, compatible Live Activities can show on the Dashboard or appear as a notification when the Dashboard is not visible. Examples include navigation progress, live sports scores, food-delivery estimates, and other time-sensitive updates.
How to enable them
For an individual app, open Settings > Apps > [app] > Live Activities and enable or adjust the available setting. The app must implement Live Activities and have an active event. Turning on the system setting does not create a Live Activity for an app that does not support the feature.
Recommended Free Tools
A practical test is to start a route in Maps, follow a compatible sports event, or place a supported food-delivery order. The activity may not appear if there is no active event, if the app has not implemented CarPlay support, or if Live Activities have been disabled or restricted through iPhone settings or a Focus mode.
Why it is useful
Live Activities can reduce the need to switch between navigation, media, and other screens. They should remain glanceable status information—not an invitation to browse a full app interface while driving. Apple’s Live Activities guide explains the behavior and settings.
4. Tapbacks let you react to Messages without dictating a reply
What they do
CarPlay can now apply a Tapback to an incoming message. That makes it possible to acknowledge a message without dictating a complete response.
How to use them
When a message arrives through the CarPlay Messages experience, you can say “Like that message” to apply a thumbs-up. You can also select the Tapback control on the CarPlay screen and choose another available emoji.
Tapbacks are most useful for short acknowledgments such as “Got it,” “Thanks,” “I’m on my way,” or “Sounds good.” They are not a replacement for hands-free dictation when a substantive response is necessary. If Siri does not understand the command, check the iPhone’s Siri language and recognition settings, and use the car’s physical controls where available rather than searching through emojis while moving.
The available reactions and exact controls can vary with the message type, Siri language, vehicle input system, and CarPlay implementation. Apple’s Messages and CarPlay guide documents Tapbacks and pinned conversations.

5. Pinned conversations make important contacts easier to reach
What they do
Conversations pinned in Messages on the iPhone now appear in the Messages app in CarPlay. This can make a short list of important contacts easier to find than scrolling through every recent conversation.
How to prepare them
- Before driving, open Messages on the iPhone.
- Pin the conversations you want to keep readily available.
- Reconnect CarPlay if necessary. The pinned conversations should then appear in CarPlay’s Messages interface.
Good candidates might include a spouse or family member, work dispatcher, childcare contact, travel companion, or frequent rideshare and delivery contact. Apple documents the behavior as synchronization of the iPhone’s pinned conversations; there is no need to invent a separate CarPlay pinning workflow.
Privacy and later-release settings
Keep the list short if the vehicle is shared. A pinned conversation can expose a person’s name or recent contact on the car’s display. Secondary reporting described an iOS 26.2 option to disable pinned conversations in CarPlay. If your current 26.x build exposes that control, use it when you prefer not to show pinned threads; the exact label and location can vary by release and configuration. See the reported iOS 26.2 refinement alongside Apple’s primary Messages documentation.
6. Incoming calls use a more compact CarPlay view
What it does
In iOS 26, an incoming call no longer has to take over the entire CarPlay screen. The compact call interface leaves more of the navigation view visible, including upcoming directions.
How to test it
- Start a navigation route while parked.
- Have someone call the connected iPhone.
- Check whether the incoming-call interface appears as a compact banner or panel rather than replacing the route view.
- Answer or end the call using the car’s controls or the displayed controls.
The exact placement depends on screen size, orientation, controls, and vehicle implementation. This is a presentation improvement, not call screening, Hold Assist, or a new phone service. Its practical benefit is preserving navigation context during a call.
7. Smart Display Zoom makes better use of certain screens
What it does
Smart Display Zoom adjusts the scale of the CarPlay interface on supported vehicle screen configurations. On some wide, ultrawide, or unusually shaped displays, a smaller interface can fit more app icons or information into the available space.
How to find it
- Park the vehicle.
- Open the CarPlay Settings app on the vehicle display.
- Open Display.
- Look for Smart Display Zoom.
- Toggle it and compare the number of icons, interface size, and legibility.
The control may not exist on your vehicle. Apple describes Smart Display Zoom as dependent on the screen configuration, so its absence is not necessarily a fault. Apple’s WWDC25 CarPlay session shows the display setting and the supported design approach.
The trade-off
- Potential benefit: more icons and a more efficient layout on a wide display.
- Potential drawback: smaller text and buttons can be harder to read or select.
- Important limitation: the setting is not universal, and a denser interface is not automatically safer.
Choose the setting that lets you identify information quickly. Do not change it while moving. If the option disappears after an update, first check the vehicle’s screen configuration and firmware; reports from testing on some systems should not be generalized to every model.
8. Multitouch controls improve map manipulation in supported vehicles
What they do
iOS 26 allows supported vehicles to expose more multitouch interactions to CarPlay navigation apps. Depending on the vehicle and app, gestures can include:

- Pinching to zoom.
- Double-tapping to zoom in.
- Double-tapping with two fingers to zoom out.
- Moving two fingers vertically to adjust map pitch.
- Rotating with two fingers.
How to test them
- Park before experimenting.
- Open Apple Maps or another navigation app that supports the relevant CarPlay capability.
- Display the map and try pinch-to-zoom first.
- Try the two-finger gestures only if the vehicle recognizes them.
- Return to the normal route-following view before driving.
Do not assume that every touchscreen CarPlay vehicle supports multitouch. Some vehicles expose only basic touch input; others rely on a rotary controller, touchpad, directional controls, or physical buttons. Both the vehicle and the navigation app must support the capability. Apple’s developer session describes the gestures, while the CarPlay developer documentation explains that CarPlay supports several types of vehicle input.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUpdated for iOS 26.4 and later
Ambient Music widget
iOS 26.4 added an Ambient Music widget to CarPlay. It provides access to curated categories such as Sleep, Chill, Productivity, and Wellbeing.
To look for it, use Settings > General > CarPlay > [your vehicle] > Widgets > Add Widget > Ambient Music > Add Widget. Availability can still depend on the iPhone’s software, vehicle display, and the current Apple Music experience. Secondary reporting says the feature does not require an Apple Music subscription, but catalog and playback behavior can change, so do not treat that as a guarantee for every region or account.
Voice-based conversational CarPlay apps
iOS 26.4 added platform support for voice-based conversational apps as a CarPlay category. This means developers can build apps designed for voice conversation in the car; it does not automatically make every chatbot available in CarPlay.
Do not assume that ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, or another named service works in CarPlay unless that specific app has shipped CarPlay support and is available in your region. Apple’s CarPlay platform documentation describes the category, and secondary reporting on iOS 26.4 covers the Ambient Music and voice-app additions.

CarPlay Ultra vehicle controls
CarPlay Ultra is not a setting that appears on every CarPlay-equipped iPhone. It requires a deeper automaker implementation and can extend beyond the center display into the instrument cluster and other vehicle screens.
With a compatible implementation, CarPlay Ultra can provide interfaces for:
- Climate control.
- Radio and audio.
- Instrument-cluster layouts and gauges.
- Vehicle information such as tire pressure.
- Vehicle-specific settings.
- Automaker-branded themes and layouts.
These controls are not included merely because a car supports standard CarPlay. Apple’s launch announcement began CarPlay Ultra availability with Aston Martin vehicles in the United States and Canada and identified Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis as automakers working toward support at that time. Availability can depend on the exact model, trim, infotainment hardware, market, and software update. Check the automaker rather than relying on a generic “CarPlay supported” listing. Read Apple’s CarPlay Ultra announcement for the distinction.
AirPlay video while parked
Apple’s CarPlay developer documentation describes AirPlay video in supported cars when the vehicle is not being driven. Automaker integration is required, so this is a vehicle-dependent capability—not universal wireless screen mirroring for every iOS 26 CarPlay system.
Best Value
- Wireless CarPlay Adapter: The carplay adapter converts your wired CarPlay to a wireless connection, making it easy to use navigation, music streaming, hands-free calling and voice control functions (compatible with CarPlay only, not compatible with other systems.)
- Easy to use: Simply plug the adapter into your car's USB port and pair, no apps or updates required. After the initial pairing, your phone will automatically connect to the CarPlay adapter every time you start your vehicle(Does not work with Android phones)
- Multiple control methods: After connection, this Wireless Carplay Adapter uk also supports voice control, steering wheel, touch screen and knob operation. Make you safer while driving
- Compatible with a variety of wireless car players: CarPlay Wireless is also equipped with USB-C and USB-A ports. Whether your car interface is USB or USB-C, you can use our CarPlay Wireless Adapter. This wireless adapter is only suitable for vehicles equipped with original wired CarPlay. Only suitable for vehicles manufactured in 2016 and later
- Compact design: The wireless carplay adapter will not block any interface, and its small size ensures that it will not interfere with other devices and save space
Even when available, it is restricted to the parked-vehicle context. Do not expect an existing CarPlay receiver to gain the feature automatically through an iOS update, and do not use video playback while the vehicle is moving. Treat AirPlay video as a bonus feature to verify with the vehicle manufacturer, not as one of the guaranteed iOS 26 upgrades.
Which changes are most useful?
This is an editorial ranking, not an Apple ranking, and your priorities may differ:
- Compact call interface: keeps navigation visible during an incoming call.
- Widgets: provide persistent, glanceable information without opening an app.
- Live Activities: show changing route, delivery, sports, or other status information.
- Tapbacks: make simple message acknowledgments quicker.
- Pinned conversations: improve access to important contacts.
- Smart Display Zoom: can improve use of wide screens, though it may reduce legibility.
- Multitouch maps: useful if both the vehicle and navigation app support the gestures.
- Liquid Glass: makes the interface look newer but changes little functionally.
For most drivers, start with widgets, Live Activities, Tapbacks, and the compact call view. Test display zoom and map gestures while parked. Treat CarPlay Ultra and AirPlay video as separate, vehicle-specific capabilities.
CarPlay troubleshooting checklist
If a feature does not appear, work through these steps:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Confirm the iPhone is running iOS 26.6 or later, or at least the latest version available to it.
- Confirm that CarPlay is connected to the intended vehicle rather than another saved car.
- Install the latest available vehicle infotainment firmware.
- Restart both the iPhone and the vehicle’s infotainment system.
- For wireless CarPlay, confirm that Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are enabled.
- On the iPhone, open Settings > General > CarPlay > [vehicle] and inspect the available controls.
- For Widgets, confirm that the app is updated and actually provides a widget approved for CarPlay.
- For Live Activities, confirm that the app supports them, an event is active, and Live Activities have not been disabled by settings or Focus.
- For Smart Display Zoom or multitouch, verify that the vehicle’s screen and input hardware support the feature.
- If the connection remains unreliable, use the vehicle-specific CarPlay settings to forget the car, then pair or connect it again.
For connection problems, Apple’s CarPlay troubleshooting guidance recommends checking iOS, vehicle compatibility, the USB cable and port, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi before reconnecting.
Use the features without adding distraction
- Configure widgets and pinned conversations before setting off.
- Use widgets and Live Activities as glanceable information, not as replacements for full app browsing.
- Use Tapbacks for simple reactions. Dictate a longer message through Siri or wait until stopped.
- Try Smart Display Zoom and multitouch map gestures only while parked.
- Use AirPlay video only when the vehicle is parked and the car explicitly supports the feature.
- Remember that a more compact or information-dense display is not necessarily easier to read. Favor legibility over fitting more content.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need CarPlay Ultra to get the new iOS 26 CarPlay features?
No. Widgets, Live Activities, Tapbacks, pinned conversations, the compact incoming-call view, the Liquid Glass redesign, and some display and map improvements can work with ordinary CarPlay. CarPlay Ultra vehicle controls require a separate automaker implementation.
Why don’t I see Widgets in CarPlay?
Check that the iPhone is running iOS 26 or later and has connected to the vehicle after updating. Then open Settings > General > CarPlay > [your vehicle] > Widgets. If the menu or a particular widget is missing, the vehicle display, app, or developer may not support it.
Does every CarPlay touchscreen support pinch-to-zoom and map rotation?
No. Multitouch map gestures require compatible vehicle input hardware and a navigation app that supports the relevant CarPlay capability. Some systems support only basic touch, while others use a rotary controller, touchpad, or buttons.
Can I watch iPhone video through CarPlay with iOS 26?
Not universally. AirPlay video requires automaker support and is intended for use when the vehicle is parked. It is not a guaranteed feature of every CarPlay receiver or ordinary wireless CarPlay connection.
Do ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude automatically work in CarPlay?
No. iOS 26.4 added a platform category for voice-based conversational CarPlay apps, but each developer must ship support and the app must be available in the relevant region. Check the specific app’s current release information.
The Bottom Line
iOS 26’s best CarPlay upgrades are the practical ones: add widgets, enable useful Live Activities, use Tapbacks for quick acknowledgments, pin only the conversations you actually need, and take advantage of the compact call view. Smart Display Zoom and multitouch maps are worth testing if your screen supports them. CarPlay Ultra controls and AirPlay video should be treated as automaker- and model-dependent extras, not guaranteed features of every iOS 26 CarPlay vehicle.
