The safe maintenance schedule for a used compressed-natural-gas (CNG) car starts with the exact owner’s manual, the CNG-system supplement, the cylinder label, service records and the rules where the car is registered. Routine engine work still applies, but a CNG system adds high-pressure tank inspections, filter service, leak checks and a fixed cylinder end-of-life date.
For U.S. light-duty vehicles, Department of Energy guidance describes cylinder inspection every three years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first, plus an inspection after a fire, crash or other potentially damaging event. That interval does not extend an expired tank. Filters, spark plugs, ignition components and oil remain vehicle-specific items, so do not turn one model’s schedule into a universal rule.

What schedule applies to a used CNG car?
There are two overlapping schedules:
- The base vehicle schedule: oil, coolant, belts, brakes, tires, plugs and other engine or chassis items listed in the main owner’s manual.
- The CNG-system schedule: cylinder inspection, expiration control, fuel-filter replacement, leak checks and inspection of valves, regulators, vents, fittings and mounting hardware.
The U.S. Department of Energy Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC) states that “CNG fuel systems require different maintenance than conventional fuel systems.” Its guidance is not a substitute for the manual supplied with your exact factory-built vehicle or conversion. A converted gasoline car should generally retain the original manufacturer’s service intervals, particularly while any warranty applies.
Before booking work, identify the vehicle’s country, gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), factory-built or converted status, cylinder type and the dates stamped on the tank. A light-duty U.S. interval, a heavy commercial vehicle interval, a Brazilian legal inspection and a model-specific manufacturer schedule are not interchangeable.

Maintenance intervals at a glance
| Item | Published guidance or example | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| CNG cylinder inspection | U.S. light-duty guidance: every 3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first; inspect again after a fire, collision or other event that could damage the cylinder. Vehicles above 10,000 lb GVWR are given an annual interval. | Confirm the vehicle class, country, tank label, manufacturer instructions and local law. These are U.S. guidance values, not a global rule. |
| Tank end of life | Cylinders are generally designed for 15–20 years, depending on construction and certification. | Use the marked manufacture or expiration date for the particular cylinder. An inspection cannot extend that date; an expired cylinder must be replaced by a qualified facility. |
| CNG fuel filter | AFDC says a filter generally needs annual replacement by a qualified service facility. | Check the exact manual and installed system before ordering a part. Treat the annual figure as general guidance, not a guaranteed interval or a DIY instruction. |
| Spark plugs and ignition | Natural gas is more sensitive than gasoline to spark quality and voltage. | Maintain plugs, wires, coils and heat protection at the intervals and specifications in the manual. No universal CNG plug-mileage interval is established. |
| Engine oil | Natural gas can produce less carbon and may allow useful oil life to last longer. | Follow the vehicle manual rather than extending intervals on your own. Converted vehicles should normally follow the original gasoline schedule. |
| Gas joints and leaks | A manufacturer example calls for gas-joint inspection at every listed service checkpoint. | Have leak checks and pressurized-component work performed by qualified CNG technicians. |
| Filler-receptacle seal | The Tour S CNG supplement specifies an O-ring change every 4 years or 300,000 km, whichever comes first. | This is a single model’s instruction, not a universal CNG interval. |
Tank inspection and expiration are separate checks
Periodic inspection
For U.S. light-duty vehicles, AFDC describes inspection at three-year or 36,000-mile intervals, whichever arrives first. A vehicle above 10,000 lb GVWR is given a 12-month interval instead. The same guidance calls for an additional inspection after a crash, fire or other incident that could have harmed the cylinder. Road debris, salt and other chemicals can damage a tank even when the car appears to run normally.
Inspection is a condition assessment. It does not reset the calendar or mileage clock and it does not authorize use beyond the cylinder’s marked end-of-life date.
Finding the cylinder’s date
Locate the identification and expiration markings on the cylinder or on labels near the fueling connector or under the hood. Record the cylinder serial or identification information, manufacture date and end-of-life date; a registration year is not a reliable substitute. Cars can receive replacement tanks, and a conversion may have a different cylinder from the one installed at first sale.

What happens at expiration
AFDC says CNG tanks cannot be safely requalified to extend their service life. An expired tank must be removed and replaced by a qualified facility, with the fuel handled and purged using proper equipment. Do not sand, repaint, drill, weld, pressure-test or attempt to “recertify” a cylinder yourself.

How to verify a tank on a used-car purchase
- Request records. Ask for the latest cylinder-inspection report, the date and mileage of that inspection, and the next due date.
- Read the label in person. Photograph the cylinder identification and expiration marking and match it with the service paperwork.
- Check incident history. Look for collision, fire, flood, underbody impact or chemical exposure. Any event that could have damaged the cylinder warrants an inspection even if no warning light is on.
- Arrange an independent qualified inspection. Use a facility trained for the vehicle’s CNG system, especially when the tank is mounted beneath the body or records are incomplete.
- Make the sale conditional on the result. An inspection that finds damage, missing labels or an expired tank can change the vehicle’s safe, legal and financial value.
Do not accept a seller’s statement that a recent inspection makes an old cylinder good indefinitely. The inspection date and the marked expiration date answer different questions.
CNG filters: annual guidance, exact fitment
The CNG fuel filter protects regulators and injectors from contaminants and, in some systems, separates oil or other material carried in the high-pressure gas stream. AFDC’s general guidance is replacement about once a year by a qualified service facility, but the exact requirement varies by vehicle and installed equipment.
Why the part cannot be guessed
Factory CNG cars and converted cars may use different filter locations, cartridges, seals and service procedures. A model-specific supplement can call for a cartridge with an O-ring, while another system may use a different assembly. Verify the vehicle identification number, engine, conversion kit and filter specification before purchasing anything.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSymptoms that deserve diagnosis
- Hard starting or stalling when changing from gasoline to CNG.
- Loss of power under load or an engine fault related to fuel pressure.
- Regulator icing, pressure instability or repeated injector contamination.
- A service record showing the filter is overdue or the wrong cartridge was installed.
These symptoms can also indicate regulator, injector, electrical or software faults. Replacing a filter without a pressure and leak diagnosis can conceal the real problem. High-pressure lines must not be opened by an untrained owner.

Spark plugs, coils and oil on natural gas
Ignition maintenance
AFDC notes that natural gas is more sensitive than gasoline to spark quality and voltage. A marginal plug, worn wire, weak coil or heat-damaged connector can therefore cause a misfire that is less obvious on gasoline and severe on CNG. Inspect and replace plugs, wires and coils according to the main manual and any CNG supplement. Use the specified heat range, gap and component type; there is no single “CNG plug” interval that fits every engine or conversion.
When a CNG engine misfires, check ignition condition before assuming the tank or injectors are at fault. Persistent misfire can overheat emissions components and should not be ignored.
Oil changes
Natural gas combustion tends to produce less carbon, so oil may remain cleaner for longer. AFDC nevertheless directs owners to the vehicle’s maintenance manual for oil grade and change intervals. Do not lengthen the interval solely because the car uses CNG. A converted gasoline vehicle should normally keep the original schedule, especially if the conversion was installed under a warranty or certification program.
Leak checks and what to do when you smell gas
Routine leak prevention
Gas joints should be checked at the service milestones specified by the vehicle maker. A professional CNG inspection also examines valves, pressure-relief devices, vent lines, regulators, shutoff solenoids, gauges, high-pressure filters and connections. Do not use improvised sealants, tighten a pressurized fitting by feel or substitute a gasoline-system hose.

Immediate response
- If you smell gas, hear hissing or see visible damage, stop using the vehicle and move people away from ignition sources.
- Do not start the engine, operate electrical switches unnecessarily or smoke near the car.
- If it can be done without approaching a damaged area, follow the vehicle manual’s emergency shutoff and parking instructions. Do not touch valves or fittings you are not trained to handle.
- Call a qualified CNG service facility or emergency service and describe any crash, fire, impact or tank damage.
- Do not drive the car to a shop when a leak or cylinder damage is suspected; arrange professional recovery according to the vehicle and tank-maker instructions.
A leak that disappears after the car cools is still a leak. Pressurized-gas faults require a trained diagnosis, not a driveway test with a flame or an unapproved spray.
What a qualified professional inspection covers
The Natural Gas Vehicle Institute’s visual-inspection guide calls for checks of:
- the cylinder label, identity and marked service life;
- cuts, abrasion, corrosion, bulging, heat exposure and impact damage;
- mounting brackets, restraints and surrounding bodywork;
- pressure-relief devices, vent lines and valves;
- the high-pressure coalescing filter and shutoff solenoid;
- the pressure gauge, regulator and all accessible connections; and
- leak evidence and system integrity.
The guide warns: “Do not attempt this procedure unless you have been fully trained by an accredited training organization.” Its disposition rules can require removal from service; severe cylinder damage may require defueling, cylinder removal and condemnation under the cylinder maker’s criteria. A buyer should rely on that qualified determination rather than trying to grade damage from photographs.
Example: the Tour S CNG manufacturer schedule
The Maruti Suzuki Tour S CNG supplementary owner’s manual illustrates why model-specific instructions matter. Its service table runs from 1,000 to 100,000 km and directs technicians to inspect gas joints at every listed service point. The low-pressure filter cartridge and O-ring are marked for replacement at the 20,000-km intervals shown in that table. Cylinder leak testing and certification are specified every three years from the initial test by a government-approved testing agency. The CNG filler-receptacle O-ring is specified for replacement every four years or 300,000 km, whichever comes first.

The supplement says to continue the same services at the same intervals after 100,000 km and refers owners to the main manual for other maintenance. Those instructions apply to that named model and market; they do not establish a schedule for another factory CNG car or a converted vehicle.
Country and vehicle-class rules can change the interval
| Situation | Requirement described by the source | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. light-duty CNG vehicle | Tank inspection every 3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first; additional inspection after a damaging incident. | AFDC guidance; verify the tank label, manufacturer instructions and applicable state or local rules. |
| U.S. vehicle above 10,000 lb GVWR | Annual tank-inspection interval in the AFDC guidance. | Vehicle-class rule; do not apply it to every passenger car. |
| Brazilian vehicle with a CNG kit | Inmetro’s FAQ, updated March 31, 2025, states that periodic safety inspection is required every 12 months from installation by an accredited inspection body or designated public or para-public technical entity. | This is a Brazilian legal kit-inspection requirement, not a U.S. cylinder interval. |
| Tour S CNG example | Three-year cylinder leak testing and certification, plus model-specific filter, gas-joint and filler-seal intervals. | Manufacturer instructions for one model and market. |
When comparing two used CNG cars, compare GVWR, factory-built versus converted system, cylinder type and label, mileage and calendar limits, required inspection body and jurisdiction. Mixing values from different rows can produce an unsafe schedule.
Common maintenance mistakes and corrections
- Using registration age as tank age: read the cylinder’s own manufacture and expiration markings.
- Assuming inspection equals recertification: inspection checks condition; it does not extend the marked service life.
- Installing a generic filter: match the exact vehicle, CNG system, cartridge and seal.
- Inventing a spark-plug mileage interval: use the manual’s plug type, gap and replacement interval.
- Applying a foreign legal interval at home: identify the country and inspection authority before scheduling work.
- Opening high-pressure components at home: use a qualified CNG facility for filters, leak checks, tank work and purging.
- Ignoring a post-crash inspection: arrange one after any event that could have struck, heated or chemically damaged the cylinder.
Records to keep throughout ownership
Keep the owner’s manual and CNG supplement with a maintenance log. For every service, record the date, odometer, fuel system worked on, cylinder identification, inspection result, filter and O-ring part numbers, technician or facility qualification, and the next calendar or mileage deadline. Retain inspection certificates and invoices, not just dashboard reminders. A complete file makes the next tank inspection and a future sale easier to verify.
