Flex fuel is a capability built into certain gasoline vehicles—not a fuel that every gasoline car can use. A flexible-fuel vehicle, or FFV, has a fuel system and engine calibration designed to run on gasoline and approved gasoline-ethanol blends up to E85. E85, commonly called flex fuel at the pump, is the high-ethanol fuel that an FFV can use.

The main advantage is choice: you can use regular gasoline when E85 is unavailable and choose E85 when its local price makes sense. The main disadvantages are lower fuel economy, shorter driving range, and limited station availability. Whether E85 saves money depends on cost per mile, not simply the price printed on the pump.

What does flex fuel mean?

In the United States, “flex fuel” usually refers to either a flexible-fuel vehicle or the E85 fuel it can use. Those are not the same thing:

Term Meaning
FFV A factory-designed gasoline vehicle that can operate on gasoline and approved gasoline-ethanol blends up to E85.
E85 A high-ethanol gasoline blend intended for FFVs. In the United States, it contains approximately 51% to 83% ethanol, depending on location and season.
E10 Gasoline containing up to 10% ethanol. It is common at U.S. gas stations, but it is not the same as E85 or flex fuel.
E15 A gasoline blend containing up to 15% ethanol. It has different vehicle and equipment-use rules from E85.

The “85” in E85 is therefore not a promise that every gallon contains exactly 85% ethanol. Seasonal changes help maintain starting and drivability in different temperatures. The U.S. Department of Energy’s ethanol basics guidance explains the fuel’s composition and use.

How does a flex-fuel vehicle work?

An FFV still uses a conventional gasoline internal-combustion engine. It is not an electric vehicle or a hybrid simply because it can use ethanol.

The important differences are in the fuel-system materials, sensors, engine-control software, and powertrain calibration. These components allow the vehicle to recognize and operate with different gasoline-ethanol mixtures. In normal use, the driver does not need to manually adjust the engine: the vehicle is designed to run on gasoline, E85, or mixtures within its approved fuel range.

Ethanol has different chemical and energy characteristics from gasoline. An FFV is engineered to accommodate those differences. A gasoline-only vehicle is not automatically protected against the fuel-system, drivability, emissions, or mechanical problems that can result from using a high-ethanol blend.

Can any gasoline car use E85?

No. E85 should be used only in a vehicle specifically designed and approved as an FFV. The pump should be clearly marked, and the vehicle’s owner’s manual, fuel-door label, or manufacturer documentation should confirm compatibility.

Do not rely on a yellow fuel cap, a badge, a model name, an internet forum, or the fact that a similar vehicle was sold as an FFV. Check the exact vehicle and model year. If the documentation does not identify the car as a flex-fuel vehicle, use the fuel specified by the manufacturer and do not fill it with E85.

E15 also should not be confused with E85. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency permits E15 for FFVs and certain model-year 2001-and-newer light-duty vehicles, but restrictions apply to many older vehicles, motorcycles, boats, heavy-duty vehicles, and nonroad equipment. Approval to use E15 does not mean that a conventional gasoline vehicle can use E85.

Advantages of flex-fuel vehicles

1. You have more than one fuel option

The central benefit of an FFV is flexibility. You can use ordinary gasoline when E85 is unavailable, then choose E85 when a convenient station offers a worthwhile price. That can be useful for drivers who travel through areas with inconsistent E85 availability.

This is different from owning a vehicle that requires a special fuel. An FFV is designed to operate on approved gasoline as well, so you are not normally dependent on finding E85 for every trip.

2. E85 can support renewable-fuel use

Ethanol is a renewable transportation fuel made from plant materials, including corn and other biomass sources. Using E85 can reduce the amount of petroleum gasoline consumed, although the actual effect depends on how much E85 the vehicle uses and how the ethanol was produced.

This benefit is therefore best understood as a potential renewable-fuel and energy-security advantage—not as a guarantee that every FFV or every gallon of E85 has the same environmental outcome.

3. Some emissions may be reduced

According to DOE comparisons, E85 can reduce evaporative emissions and certain toxic pollutants, including benzene, under relevant conditions. Ethanol blends can also affect carbon dioxide emissions.

Those benefits need qualification. Results vary with the vehicle, engine calibration, blend level, test conditions, and the life-cycle method used to evaluate ethanol production. E85 can increase acetaldehyde emissions, and its overall greenhouse-gas result depends partly on the production pathway and what is included in the analysis. It is inaccurate to describe E85 as cleaner in every respect.

4. Some FFVs may feel responsive on E85

Higher-ethanol fuel has a high octane rating, and DOE notes that many FFVs can show improved acceleration on higher ethanol blends. The result depends on the vehicle’s calibration and operating conditions. It does not justify promising a specific horsepower gain or assuming that every FFV will be faster on E85.

Disadvantages of flex fuel and E85

1. Lower fuel economy

The most predictable drawback is lower miles per gallon. Ethanol contains less energy per gallon than gasoline. DOE estimates that E85 containing 83% ethanol has roughly 27% less energy per gallon than gasoline. Across the permitted E85 range, a gallon contains approximately 73% to 83% of the energy in a gasoline-gallon equivalent.

As ethanol content rises, an FFV generally travels fewer miles on each gallon. The exact MPG loss depends on the vehicle, blend, driving conditions, weather, and maintenance.

For example, DOE’s model-year 2025 FFV listings rate a Buick Encore GX front-wheel-drive model at 30 mpg on gasoline and 22 mpg on E85. That is a useful illustration of the trade-off, not a prediction for every Buick, every FFV, or every model year.

2. Shorter range between fill-ups

Lower MPG normally means a shorter driving range from the same-size tank. This matters most on road trips, rural routes, or commutes where E85 stations are scarce. An FFV may still have a normal-sized fuel tank, but the vehicle will consume fuel more quickly when operating on E85.

3. E85 is not automatically cheaper to use

A lower pump price does not necessarily mean a lower transportation cost. The correct comparison is fuel cost per mile:

E85 cost per mile = E85 price per gallon ÷ E85 MPG

Gasoline cost per mile = gasoline price per gallon ÷ gasoline MPG

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

E85 is cheaper per mile only when its percentage price discount is at least as large as the vehicle’s percentage MPG loss.

For instance, suppose an FFV gets 30 mpg on gasoline and 22 mpg on E85. The MPG loss is about 26.7%. E85 would generally need to cost at least about 26.7% less than gasoline to break even on fuel cost per mile. If gasoline costs $3.00 per gallon, E85 would need to cost approximately $2.20 per gallon for the two choices to be close in operating cost.

This is only an example. Use your vehicle’s official gasoline and E85 ratings and current local prices. DOE’s fuel-economy information and E85 cost comparisons can help with the calculation.

4. E85 stations are not available everywhere

E85 availability varies substantially by state, city, and route. A station may exist somewhere in your region but still be inconvenient for your daily commute or unavailable along a planned trip. Stations can also change fuel offerings.

  • Simple test to discover the percentage of ethanol alcohol in gasoline. With readings of e10, e15, e20, e25, e80, e85 and e90
  • High levels of ethanol could damage your fuel system and lower your fuel mileage.
  • Ethanol can damage motors not equipped or designed to use it, test your gasoline first.

Before deciding that an FFV is economical, search your normal routes using the DOE Alternative Fueling Station Locator. Check the areas where you regularly drive, not merely the total number of stations in your state.

5. Environmental effects involve trade-offs

The environmental case for E85 depends on more than the fuel coming from plants. Vehicle emissions, ethanol feedstock, farming practices, processing energy, transportation, land use, and the life-cycle boundary can all affect the result.

E85 may reduce some evaporative emissions and toxic pollutants, but it is not accurate to claim a universal emissions advantage in every comparison. Treat renewable content as one consideration alongside fuel economy, price, availability, and the production pathway.

How to decide whether E85 is worth using

  1. Confirm that the vehicle is an FFV. Check the fuel door, owner’s manual, vehicle documentation, or manufacturer information for the exact model and year. If you cannot confirm it, do not use E85.
  2. Find stations on your actual routes. Use the DOE station locator and check your commute, local errands, and common road-trip destinations.
  3. Record the vehicle’s separate MPG ratings. Do not assume the gasoline rating applies to E85. Use official E85 and gasoline figures where available.
  4. Compare cost per mile. Divide each fuel’s local price by its corresponding MPG. Recalculate when prices change.
  5. Plan for reduced range. On E85, allow for more frequent fill-ups and confirm that stations are available before a long trip.
  6. Keep E15 and E85 separate. They have different compositions and different approved-use rules.
  7. Consider your priorities. E85 may appeal to drivers who value fuel choice or renewable-fuel use, even when the financial savings are small. For others, gasoline may be the more convenient and economical option.

What if E85 is accidentally put in a gasoline-only vehicle?

If you realize the mistake before starting the engine, do not start it. Contact the vehicle manufacturer, roadside assistance provider, or a qualified repair facility for guidance on draining the tank.

If the vehicle has already been driven, stop safely when possible and arrange professional advice. Continuing to drive can increase the chance of drivability or emissions-system problems. The appropriate response depends on the amount of E85, the vehicle, and how far it was driven; do not assume that adding gasoline will always make the mixture safe.

Should you convert a gasoline car to flex fuel?

For most owners, conversion is not a simple or advisable substitute for buying a factory FFV. A conversion must account for fuel-system compatibility, engine control, emissions performance, safety, and applicable federal and state requirements.

Altering certified emissions equipment or installing noncompliant parts can create regulatory problems and may affect reliability, warranty coverage, inspection, or insurance. Do not treat generic aftermarket conversion kits as a plug-and-play way to gain an E85 option. If a conversion is being considered for a specialized application, consult a qualified professional who can address the applicable emissions and safety rules.

Do you need an ethanol-content tester?

Normal FFV owners do not need to test every tank of fuel before filling up. Use the correctly labeled pump and follow the vehicle manufacturer’s instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is flex fuel the same as E85?

Not exactly. A flex-fuel vehicle, or FFV, is the vehicle designed to use gasoline and high-ethanol blends. E85 is the fuel intended for FFVs. In the United States, E85 contains approximately 51% to 83% ethanol, so it is not always exactly 85% ethanol.

Can I put E85 in a regular gasoline car?

No. E85 should be used only in a vehicle specifically designed and approved as an FFV. Confirm compatibility in the owner’s manual, fuel-door label, or manufacturer documentation.

Does E85 give better gas mileage?

Usually not. Because ethanol contains less energy per gallon than gasoline, MPG generally decreases on E85. Some FFVs may offer improved acceleration on higher-ethanol fuel, but that does not offset the usual fuel-economy penalty.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is E85 cheaper than gasoline?

E85 often has a lower price per gallon, but that does not guarantee lower operating costs. Compare each fuel’s price per gallon with the vehicle’s MPG on that fuel. E85 must be discounted by roughly the same percentage as the MPG loss to break even on cost per mile.

Can an FFV run on regular gasoline?

Yes. A factory-designed FFV is intended to operate on gasoline as well as approved gasoline-ethanol blends up to E85. Gasoline is useful when E85 is unavailable or does not offer a worthwhile cost-per-mile advantage.

What is the difference between E15 and E85?

E15 contains up to 15% ethanol, while E85 is a much higher-ethanol blend intended for FFVs. Their approved-use rules are different. E15 approval for certain vehicles does not mean that E85 is safe for those vehicles.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Flex fuel makes sense when you own a confirmed FFV, have convenient access to E85, and the local discount is large enough to overcome the vehicle’s lower E85 MPG. Otherwise, the vehicle’s ability to use E85 may provide flexibility without delivering a financial advantage. Check compatibility first, compare cost per mile rather than pump prices, and expect shorter range on E85.
