Uhnder’s S80 4D Digital Automotive Radar-on-Chip, Explained

Uhnder’s S80 is a 77-GHz automotive radar-on-chip that combines range, relative velocity, horizontal angle and elevation measurements. Here is what the company’s performance claims and production announcements do—and do not—show.

Uhnder’s S80 is a 77-GHz automotive radar-on-chip designed to give driver-assistance systems measurements of an object’s distance, relative speed, horizontal position and height. Uhnder calls its approach digital radar and says its Digital Code Modulation (DCM) helps separate targets and mitigate interference from other radars. The company’s large performance multipliers are claims, not independently reproduced comparisons in the public material cited here.

What “4D radar” means

In this context, “4D” refers to four kinds of information about a radar return: range, Doppler, azimuth and elevation. In everyday terms, the system aims to estimate how far away an object is, whether and how quickly it is moving toward or away from the vehicle, its horizontal direction, and its height.

  • Range: distance from the sensor to a detected object.
  • Doppler: relative velocity, derived from the change in the radar return.
  • Azimuth: horizontal angle or direction.
  • Elevation: vertical angle, which can help distinguish objects at different heights.

“4D” describes the measured dimensions; it does not mean four separate sensors, nor does it by itself establish how reliably the system identifies a particular object. The S80 is a radar chip intended for integration into vehicle systems, not a consumer device that a driver installs directly.

What makes Uhnder’s radar “digital”

Uhnder’s Digital Code Modulation (DCM) is the company’s signal approach for its automotive radar. Uhnder says DCM is intended to improve the separation of targets and reduce interference from nearby radars. That matters in principle because a vehicle needs to distinguish relevant returns in an environment where other radar sensors may also be operating.

The S80 was announced as a 77-GHz radar-on-chip for advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), autonomous vehicles and automated mobility. An independent Electronic Design report confirms the S80’s 77-GHz identity and automotive-qualified positioning; it does not independently validate Uhnder’s advertised performance multipliers.

How the stated specifications compare—and what they do not prove

In a March 2022 launch release, Uhnder said its digital radar offered “16 times better resolution,” “24 times more power on target” and “30 times better contrast” than what it called today’s analog offerings. Those are company-reported comparisons. The public material cited here does not provide an independent test reproducing the multipliers or enough test detail to treat them as universal results across sensors, vehicles or conditions.

Comparison point What is established for the S80 What is not established by the cited material
Resolution Uhnder claimed a 16× improvement over analog offerings in its 2022 launch release. An independently reproduced multiplier or a like-for-like test protocol.
Power on target Uhnder claimed 24× more power on target in the same release. A general real-world detection-distance advantage or independently verified value.
Contrast Uhnder claimed 30× better contrast in the same release. A shared measurement definition or independent comparative result.
Channels Uhnder and OFilm announced a planned radar using 12 transmit and 16 receive channels in 2022. Whether those channel counts describe every S80-based product or the final configuration of every announced system.
Frame rate Uhnder’s corporate site, accessed in 2026, says the system can provide height, speed and distance detection at more than 50 frames per second. An independent measurement under specified vehicle, range or weather conditions.

The figures should therefore be read as Uhnder’s positioning and reported specifications, not as a guarantee that every S80 installation will outperform every analog radar by those ratios. System performance also depends on the integrated sensor, processing, software and vehicle implementation; the cited figures alone do not quantify those effects.

What radar can add alongside cameras and lidar

Radar, cameras and lidar are different sensing modalities, and an ADAS stack may combine them rather than treat one as a universal replacement for the others. Uhnder positions its chip for automotive sensing, but the cited announcements do not provide controlled head-to-head results against cameras or lidar for small-object detection, stationary objects, lateral movement, or performance in rain, fog, snow, dust, darkness or glare.

Question Uhnder S80 radar Camera or lidar comparison in the cited material
Distance, relative speed and angle Uhnder describes 4D detection as including range, Doppler, azimuth and elevation. Not stated in Uhnder’s cited comparisons.
Small or partly hidden objects No independently verified S80 result for these cases is stated. Not stated in Uhnder’s cited comparisons.
Weather, darkness or glare No condition-by-condition S80 test result is stated. Not stated in Uhnder’s cited comparisons.
System-level ADAS performance The S80 is positioned for ADAS and automated-vehicle integration. No direct comparative system test is stated.

That means the S80’s 4D label and company claims are not enough to answer whether a specific vehicle can detect a particular small, stationary or occluded object in bad weather. Those are system-level questions requiring test conditions and results that are not supplied by the announcements described here.

Automotive qualification and announced integrations

Uhnder said in April 2022 that the S80 would enter mass production after AEC-Q104 qualification, an ISO 26262 ASIL-B rating, and PPAP with Tier-1 supplier Magna. Uhnder also said its radar was used in Magna’s ICON Digital Radar. These statements describe qualification and integration milestones announced by the company; they do not establish present-day shipment volumes or how widely a particular vehicle model uses the technology.

Other announcements indicate intended ecosystem adoption, not necessarily current availability:

  • OFilm: In 2022, OFilm announced a planned Uhnder-based radar for China with 12 transmit and 16 receive channels.
  • bitsensing: In April 2023, bitsensing and Uhnder announced a collaboration focused on digital automotive radar solutions for Korean passenger-vehicle OEM needs.

Automotive qualification of a component is not, on its own, proof that a complete vehicle or ADAS feature has achieved a particular safety outcome. Vehicle-level behavior depends on the full sensing and control system.

Can consumers buy the S80?

The S80 is a proprietary automotive semiconductor intended for OEM and Tier-1 design programs, rather than a retail radar accessory. The public material cited here does not establish consumer pricing, current shipment volumes, present-day availability, or a public developer or reseller program. A vehicle owner looking for a retrofit sensor should not assume the chip is sold as a plug-and-play product.
