Subaru describes the car as a new chapter in its “Gymkhana Season.” The next film, Gymkhana: Aussie Shred, puts Pastrana and the Brataroo in Australian locations including the Outback, Sydney Harbour and Mount Panorama at Bathurst. Film footage demonstrates the vehicle’s intended entertainment and stunt role; it is not an independent road test.
How much horsepower does the Gymkhana Subaru Brat make?
The Gymkhana Subaru Brat makes 670 horsepower and 680 lb-ft of torque. Those figures come from Subaru Motorsports USA’s 2025 announcement and apply to the Brataroo 9500 Turbo’s turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder Subaru Boxer engine.
Subaru also says the engine revs beyond 9,500 rpm, which explains the “9500” in the car’s name. The published specification does not establish a 0-to-60-mph time, top speed, lap time or other road-car performance result, so those figures should not be inferred from the film.
Power travels through a six-speed sequential SADEV gearbox and motorsport-grade differentials to the all-wheel-drive system. The drivetrain is therefore fundamentally different from the hardware used in an ordinary production BRAT.

| Transmission | Six-speed sequential SADEV | Motorsport gearbox rather than production BRAT equipment |
| Drive system | All-wheel drive | Designed for controlled traction during stunts and launches |
Is the Brataroo a real Subaru BRAT?
The Brataroo is not a restored or modified production Subaru BRAT in the ordinary sense. The car is a bespoke Gymkhana build inspired by the 1978 BRAT, with the vintage pickup’s proportions and styling spirit wrapped around a competition chassis and racing powertrain.

Subaru says BRAT stands for “Bi-Drive Recreational All-Terrain Transporter.” The Brataroo keeps that heritage visible, but its purpose is very different: the Brataroo was created for stunt filming, jumps, high-energy driving and tire destruction rather than street transportation or utility use.
Designer and concept artist Khyzyl Saleem, known as The Kyza, reshaped the original design into an extreme widebody. The livery combines retro Subaru cues with Australian references, including Outback-sunset colors and kangaroo imagery. KMC Wheels, Mercury Marine, Yokohama, Heat Wave and Dixxon appear among the visible brand marks listed by Subaru.
What makes the Brataroo’s chassis and aerodynamics unusual?
The Brataroo uses entirely carbon-fiber bodywork over a Vermont SportsCar-engineered chassis. Subaru’s announcement also specifies a roll cage certified to the latest World Rally Championship safety standards, underscoring that the vehicle is engineered as a competition machine rather than a road-going BRAT.
The active-aero system is one of the Brataroo’s most distinctive technical features. Adjustable front-fender louvers can change front-end balance while the car is on the ground or airborne. The system uses repurposed HVAC controls inside the cockpit, giving the vintage-inspired interior a functional control for modern aerodynamic hardware.
The car has two interchangeable rear wings. A larger wing supplies high downforce for high-speed stability, while a smaller wing is intended for more general Gymkhana driving. Both wings can change their angle of attack and actuate upward to help manage pitch and rotation during jumps.

One-off 18-inch KMC forged monoblock wheels support the car. Subaru lists Yokohama ADVAN A052 or APEX tires depending on the stunt and road-surface requirements. Those are event-specific competition specifications, not a recommendation for ordinary road use.

The Brataroo continues Pastrana’s bespoke Subaru Gymkhana lineage, but its 670-horsepower figure should not be confused with the published output of the earlier Airslayer STI. Subaru’s earlier Gymkhana vehicles included the 862-horsepower Airslayer STI from Gymkhana 2020 and the 1983 Subaru GL Wagon Family Huckster from Gymkhana 2022.
| Vehicle | Gymkhana context | Published power in the supplied sources | Body and purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brataroo 9500 Turbo | Gymkhana: Aussie Shred; unveiled in 2025 | 670 hp; 680 lb-ft | 1978 BRAT-inspired, bespoke stunt vehicle |
| Airslayer STI | Gymkhana 2020 | 862 hp | Bespoke Gymkhana Subaru; other specifications are not established here |
| 1983 Subaru GL Wagon Family Huckster | Gymkhana 2022 | Not stated in the supplied sources | Bespoke Gymkhana Subaru wagon; other specifications are not established here |
The Brataroo is not automatically the fastest of the three simply because it is newer, and the Airslayer’s higher published horsepower does not make it the better vehicle for every stunt. No comparable independent acceleration, top-speed or lap-time testing was established in the official material reviewed for this article.
What is inside the Brataroo’s cockpit?
The cockpit mixes period BRAT references with current competition equipment. Subaru lists a carbon-fiber dashboard, flax-composite wood-grain accents, a restored original-equipment radio and a period-correct Uniden CB radio.
Modern safety and control hardware sits alongside those retro details. The seats are Recaro SPA ProRacer units with HANS support, and a Sparco six-point competition harness secures the driver. The HVAC controls have been repurposed to operate the active-aero system, making a familiar vintage control cluster part of the car’s stunt-driving interface.

Travis Pastrana summarized the design in Subaru’s official announcement: “This BRAT’s completely unhinged – in the best way possible.” Pastrana’s statement is a characterization of the build, not an independently measured performance claim. He also said, “It’s got the soul of a vintage Subaru with the tech to do things no Gymkhana car has ever done.”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you buy a Brataroo 9500 Turbo?
You cannot treat the Brataroo 9500 Turbo as a production Subaru available through dealers. The supplied official information identifies the vehicle as a bespoke Gymkhana build and does not establish a production run, public sale, road-legal conversion or consumer price.
Readers interested in the original pickup rather than the one-off stunt car may look for a Subaru BRAT repair manual for restoration or ownership of a normal production BRAT. A repair manual would not explain how to service the Brataroo’s bespoke engine, carbon-fiber chassis, SADEV gearbox or active-aero system, and the exact edition and current availability should be confirmed before purchase.
Where can you find Brataroo and Gymkhana merchandise?
Hoonigan’s official store lists a dedicated Aussie Shred Gymkhana gear collection that includes apparel, stickers, hats, keychains and a Hoonigan x Leen Customs Gymkhana BRAT collectible pin. Inventory and prices can change, so the collection should be checked at publication time rather than treated as a permanent catalog.
Official Subaru Gymkhana gear is another relevant option. Subaru Gear’s Gymkhana category lists items such as a Gymkhana 25 snapback hat, livery shirts, a hoodie, a keytag and stickers. These products are merchandise, not Brataroo replacement parts or technical equipment.

A licensed Brataroo model or die-cast is a future possibility rather than a verified current product. Subaru Corporation’s 2026 licensing-opportunities document lists the Brataroo 9500 Turbo and Travis Pastrana among available Gymkhana assets, but no retail Brataroo model was established in the research reviewed for this article.
What does Gymkhana: Aussie Shred show?
Gymkhana: Aussie Shred is the film built around the Brataroo 9500 Turbo. Official descriptions identify sequences involving Australia’s Outback, Sydney Harbour and Bathurst’s Mount Panorama.
The film is best understood as a showcase for a purpose-built stunt vehicle. Tire smoke, jumps, slides and dramatic camera angles are part of the production, not evidence of a consumer vehicle’s repeatable road performance, reliability or legal suitability for public streets.
