Toyota’s Century SUV is more than a chauffeur-focused flagship: in October 2025, the company said it had decided to launch Century as a brand. Toyota says it wants that brand to carry Japanese identity into the world, but has not announced specific overseas markets or a rollout schedule. The distinction matters: the ambition is public; an export launch is not yet established.
What is the Toyota Century SUV?
Introduced in Japan on September 6, 2023, the Century SUV is a chauffeur-oriented flagship that Toyota presented alongside the continuing Century sedan. The company describes Century as its premium chauffeur-driven car, a role the nameplate has held since 1967. Its emphasis is on passenger comfort, privacy and customization rather than simply adding another SUV to Toyota’s lineup. Toyota’s 2023 announcement gives the launch details.
Toyota says chauffeur-driven travel has changed: passengers may want to rest or join online meetings while on the move. The SUV’s rear cabin is intended to serve those needs, with reclining seats and refreshment functions, wide-opening rear doors, retractable steps, and a quiet, private interior. These are manufacturer descriptions, not independent test findings.
What makes its design and development distinct?
Toyota frames the vehicle around quietness, comfort, Japanese aesthetics and hospitality. At its September 2023 world premiere, executive Simon Humphries called Century “a singular automobile representing the height of Japanese sensibilities.” Toyota’s premiere account presents that as the design ambition behind the vehicle.

In a Toyota Times interview published October 5, 2023, chief engineer Yoshikazu Tanaka recalled that then-president Akio Toyoda asked the team to “bring new value to the Century,” including making the name relevant to younger customers. Design leader Tatsuya Sonoda said, “The Century is more than just another model within the Toyota brand—it carries Toyota’s corporate identity.” These remarks explain the development team’s intent; they are not evidence of measured customer demand. What are the Japan-market specifications?
Toyota’s September 2023 Japan-market announcement lists a 3.5-liter V6 plug-in hybrid system, E-Four Advanced all-wheel drive and an electric continuously variable transmission. Toyota describes the setup as intended to support BEV-like everyday use and HEV operation on longer journeys; that is the manufacturer’s stated use case, not an independently verified performance assessment.

| Specification | Toyota’s Japan-market figure (September 2023) |
|---|---|
| Length | 5,205 mm |
| Width | 1,990 mm |
| Height | 1,805 mm |
| Wheelbase | 2,950 mm |
| Weight | 2,570 kg |
| Seating capacity | Four |
These figures are Toyota’s published specifications for the Japan-market vehicle at launch; they should not be treated as specifications for a different market or model year. Toyota’s launch release also listed a Japan-market MSRP of ¥25,000,000 including consumption tax, with options and Okinawa pricing differing. That is a dated launch price, not a current quote. Toyota announced a base sales volume of 30 units per month for Japan; that was a planned figure, not a report of actual monthly sales.
What does Toyota’s Century brand announcement mean?
At the Japan Mobility Show on October 29, 2025, Toyota chairman Akio Toyoda said, “Together, we have decided to launch the Century brand.” He described the aim as cultivating “a brand that brings the spirit of Japan―the pride of Japan―out into the world.” Toyota’s published speech transcript establishes a strategic intention to make Century more than a single vehicle line.

The announcement does not specify which countries will get Century vehicles, when sales might begin outside Japan, or how a wider brand rollout would work. It also does not establish a dealer network, production target or named rivals. The supported conclusion is narrower: Toyota has announced a brand ambition, but has not provided a detailed international launch plan in that statement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Will the Century SUV be sold outside Japan?
Toyota’s cited materials do not confirm an overseas sales launch for the Century SUV, nor do they name export markets or dates. The phrase “out into the world” describes the brand’s aspiration; it is not confirmation that the SUV will be sold in a particular country. Until Toyota identifies markets and timing, availability outside Japan remains unannounced in these sources.
