When your iPhone connects to CarPlay, you can make it play a custom greeting, sound effect, meme, voice recording, or other short local audio clip. The trick is an Apple Shortcuts personal automation triggered by CarPlay—not a setting that replaces your vehicle’s factory startup chime and not a modification to the car’s firmware.
Once configured, the automation runs when the iPhone connects to CarPlay and plays the file through the vehicle’s speakers. It is free to set up, but it requires an iPhone, a vehicle or stereo with CarPlay, and an audio file that Shortcuts can access.

That distinction matters. Your car’s original chime may still play, and the custom clip may begin a moment later. The automation does not reprogram the vehicle, alter its firmware, or guarantee that the sound will play at exactly the same point during every ignition cycle.
What you need before setting it up
- An iPhone with the Shortcuts app. The relevant feature is a personal automation.
- CarPlay in the vehicle or aftermarket stereo. Wired CarPlay connects through the vehicle’s USB connection; wireless CarPlay requires a compatible vehicle or stereo.
- A short audio file saved locally or made available through the iPhone’s Files app.
- A safe place to configure and test it. Set up the automation while parked and keep the first test at a comfortable volume.
Update the iPhone and vehicle or stereo software where practical. Apple’s CarPlay requirements and connection behavior can vary by vehicle, stereo, iOS version, and whether the connection is wired or wireless.
How to make a custom CarPlay startup sound with Shortcuts
1. Save a suitable audio clip in Files
First, put the sound on the iPhone in the Files app. Good choices include:

- a sound effect you created or are licensed to use;
- a short clip from a properly licensed audio library;
- a personal greeting recorded specifically for the car.
A short file is usually the best experience. A greeting or sound effect will finish quickly and is less likely to interfere with music, navigation prompts, or a podcast that resumes after CarPlay connects. There is no Apple-wide rule that imposes a universal maximum length, so treat “short” as practical advice rather than a formal technical limit.
Do not assume that every streaming track, protected download, or online video clip will work. DRM-protected audio may not be accessible to Shortcuts, and downloading or converting copyrighted music, movie dialogue, or online videos without permission can violate copyright law or a service’s terms. The safest route is original, licensed, or permission-cleared audio.
2. Open the CarPlay automation area
- Open Shortcuts on the iPhone.
- Tap Automation.
- Tap the button to create a new personal automation. Depending on the iOS version, this may appear as a + button or New Automation.
- Choose CarPlay from the available triggers.
3. Choose the connection event
Select Connects. This tells Shortcuts to run the automation when the iPhone connects to CarPlay. The separate Disconnects event is useful for other automations, but it is not the trigger you want for a startup sound.

Tap Next to move to the action editor.
4. Add the audio file and playback actions
Add an action that retrieves the file from Files, then add an action that plays it. In many iOS versions, searching the action list for Get File and Play Sound is the most direct approach:

- Search for and add Get File. Configure it to select the sound from the Files app. If the action presents a document picker or asks you to choose a file, select your saved clip.
- Add a second action and search for Play Sound.
- Make sure the output of the file action is passed into the playback action. If Shortcuts leaves the input blank, tap the input field and choose the file or the result from the preceding action.
Action names and their controls can move slightly between iOS releases. If Play Sound does not appear immediately, search for “sound” and inspect the available playback actions. The essential sequence is retrieve the local file, then play that file.
If you want to reduce the chance of a podcast or music resuming underneath the greeting, you can try adding a media-control action such as Pause or Pause Playback before Play Sound. This is a troubleshooting option, not a guaranteed fix: different CarPlay systems and media apps may handle competing playback commands differently.
5. Allow it to run automatically
When Shortcuts asks about running the automation, choose the option that allows it to run immediately. On interfaces that show the older confirmation control, turn off Ask Before Running. CarPlay is among Apple’s personal automation triggers that can run automatically without asking for confirmation.
You may also see a notification or an additional confirmation screen depending on the iOS version. Read the options presented on the phone rather than assuming every iPhone uses identical labels.
6. Save and test it while parked
Tap Done to save the automation. Then test it without driving:

- Set the car’s media or CarPlay volume to a moderate level.
- Disconnect the iPhone from CarPlay, if necessary.
- Reconnect it or restart the car according to your normal setup.
- Wait for CarPlay to finish connecting.
- Confirm that the custom clip plays through the vehicle speakers.
Do not record or troubleshoot the setup while moving. The trend’s reveal videos may make the ignition sequence look casual, but configuring the phone, changing volume, or repositioning a camera should happen only when the vehicle is safely parked.
Why it may not play on every start
The trigger is a CarPlay connection, not a universal “engine started” signal. If the iPhone remains connected while you turn the vehicle off and back on, the exact connection event may not happen again. Wireless systems can also reconnect at a different point from wired systems.
Other normal variations include:
- the factory vehicle chime playing first;
- CarPlay taking longer to initialize;
- music or a podcast resuming before the automation;
- the sound playing quietly because the media volume is low;
- the phone being connected for charging but not actually connected to CarPlay;
- the selected file being moved, renamed, deleted, or unavailable offline.
CarPlay sound troubleshooting
The automation does not run
- Confirm that the phone is actually connecting to CarPlay, not merely charging over USB.
- Open Shortcuts > Automation and verify that the CarPlay automation is enabled.
- Open the automation and check that the trigger is Connects, not Disconnects.
- Check whether the iPhone is waiting for confirmation. If the interface offers Ask Before Running, turn it off for this automation.
- Reconnect the phone and test again while parked.
The automation runs, but there is no sound
Play another audio source through CarPlay to confirm that the vehicle volume and speakers are working. Then open the shortcut and verify that the file action still points to the correct item in Files. A cloud-only file may also fail if it has not been downloaded to the iPhone, so make the clip available offline.

Try a short, ordinary audio file in a widely supported format if the original clip fails. The practical result can depend on the file type, its location, and the actions available in that iOS release.
The sound overlaps music or a podcast
Add a pause-media action before the playback action and test it with the media app you normally use. If the overlap continues, shorten the clip, reduce the volume, or accept that the automation and resumed media may compete during connection. A custom startup sound is an extra layer on top of CarPlay; it does not control every audio app in every vehicle.
The sound is too loud or startling
Lower the car’s media volume before testing and use a clip that is clearly recognizable as a greeting or sound effect. Avoid audio that resembles an emergency siren, collision warning, police signal, or other alert that could cause confusion. A sudden loud sound can distract the driver, especially during a busy maneuver immediately after starting the vehicle.

Optional: make wired CarPlay connect wirelessly
A wireless connection is not required for the Shortcut. If the vehicle already has factory-installed wired CarPlay, an optional wireless CarPlay adapter may let a compatible iPhone connect without plugging in every time. That can make the connection-triggered sound feel more automatic.

Check the product’s compatibility requirements carefully. These adapters generally depend on the vehicle already supporting wired CarPlay; they are not a universal way to add CarPlay to a car that has no compatible system. Product listings also vary between simple adapters and more elaborate “AI box” devices, so do not treat them as interchangeable. The adapter is a convenience accessory, not part of the Shortcuts setup.

A phone mount or tripod can help frame a stationary video of the dashboard and the sound reveal, but neither is needed to create the automation. If you record one, position the phone before driving, keep the vehicle parked during the entire take, and avoid showing private information on the screen or navigation display.
Do not hold the phone, adjust the camera, or restart the recording while the car is moving. The safest reveal is staged in a driveway, parking space, or other lawful stationary location.
A third-party app alternative
Users who do not want to build the automation manually may encounter Carpio, an iPhone entertainment app marketed for custom CarPlay startup sounds. Its App Store listing describes a sound library, importing from Files, video, or microphone, text-to-speech creation, and guided setup. The listing also describes the app as free with in-app purchases and available for iPhone.
Those are developer-provided App Store claims, not independent performance testing. Carpio should be viewed as a convenience alternative—not as a replacement for the vehicle’s factory sound, a guarantee that every car will work, or proof that an app is better than Apple’s free Shortcuts method. Shortcuts is the preferable starting point if you already have a suitable clip and want the first-party, no-cost route.
How to turn the custom sound off
You do not need to delete the automation to stop it temporarily:

- Open Shortcuts.
- Tap Automation.
- Select the CarPlay automation.
- Turn off Enable This Automation.
- Tap Done if prompted.
This preserves the actions so you can enable the sound again later. To remove it entirely, return to the Automation list and delete the CarPlay automation using the delete control provided by your iOS version.
What “anything” really means
In the TikTok caption, “anything” is shorthand for almost any compatible audio file you can legally access on the iPhone. It does not mean every streaming-only song, DRM-protected file, online clip, or unusually encoded audio track will work. The file must be reachable by the chosen Shortcuts actions, and playback still depends on iOS, the file, the phone’s connection, and the vehicle’s CarPlay system.

Only if you have the necessary permission or license. Original recordings and properly licensed clips are safer choices than ripping audio from YouTube, streaming services, or films.
Can I disable the sound without deleting it?
