There is no single officially established “safest family car” for 2024. Use the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) award list to build a shortlist, then check the exact vehicle’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) ratings, recalls, child-seat fit, space and budget. Among family-oriented choices, the 2024–25 Kia Telluride, Mazda CX-90 and Subaru Ascent earned IIHS Top Safety Pick+ awards; the 2024–25 Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna minivans earned Top Safety Pick awards. These are award distinctions under IIHS’s 2024 criteria, not a universal ranking across vehicle classes.
Which family vehicles earned IIHS awards for 2024?
IIHS identifies awards by model year and vehicle class. Its 2024 list includes these family-oriented vehicles:
| Vehicle | Model years listed | IIHS award | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kia Telluride | 2024–25 | Top Safety Pick+ | No additional qualification noted here. |
| Mazda CX-90 and CX-90 PHEV | 2024–25 | Top Safety Pick+ | No additional qualification noted here. |
| Subaru Ascent | 2024–25 | Top Safety Pick+ | No additional qualification noted here. |
| Nissan Pathfinder | 2024–25 | Top Safety Pick+ | Award applies to vehicles built after November 2023. |
| Honda Pilot | 2024 | Top Safety Pick | No additional qualification noted here. |
| Hyundai Palisade | 2024–25 | Top Safety Pick | No additional qualification noted here. |
| Hyundai Santa Fe | 2024–25 | Top Safety Pick | No additional qualification noted here. |
| Honda Odyssey | 2024–25 | Top Safety Pick | Minivan. |
| Toyota Sienna | 2024–25 | Top Safety Pick | Minivan. |
| Volvo XC90 | 2024 | Top Safety Pick+ | No additional qualification noted here. |
Before treating an award as applying to a vehicle you are considering, check the exact model-year entry and any build-date qualification on the IIHS award list. Award eligibility can vary by production date: the list, for example, limits the 2024–25 Hyundai Tucson award to vehicles built after March 2024 and the Kia EV9 award to vehicles built after January 2024.
What do Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ mean?
IIHS’s 2024 awards are based on defined crashworthiness and crash-prevention tests. The two tiers share several requirements, while Top Safety Pick+ adds a stricter moderate-overlap test requirement and a headlight criterion.

| 2024 requirement | Top Safety Pick | Top Safety Pick+ |
|---|---|---|
| Updated side test | Good | Good |
| Revised pedestrian front crash prevention | Acceptable or good | Acceptable or good |
| Small-overlap front test | Good | Good |
| Moderate-overlap front test | Good in the original evaluation | Acceptable or good in the updated evaluation, which adds a rear-seat dummy behind the driver |
| Headlights | No additional requirement listed here | Acceptable or good |
These criteria describe the 2024 award program; IIHS criteria can change from year to year. IIHS said 71 models qualified for 2024 awards: 22 received Top Safety Pick+ and 49 received Top Safety Pick. Those counts show how awards were distributed, not what proportion of all family vehicles offer equivalent protection. In its 2024 release, IIHS President David Harkey said, “This year’s winners are true standouts, offering the highest level of protection for both vehicle occupants and other vulnerable road users.”
How should you use NHTSA crash ratings?
NHTSA’s New Car Assessment Program rates frontal, side and rollover crash protection on a one-to-five-star scale. Stars are useful evidence, but they are not a guarantee of safety or a universal way to rank vehicles of different sizes. NHTSA says frontal and overall ratings should be compared only among vehicles in the same class and within 250 pounds of one another; it also cautions that a high star rating does not rule out a safety concern.

- Used Book in Good Condition
Look up the detailed record for the exact model year and check current recalls using NHTSA’s ratings page and recall lookup. NHTSA’s selected 2024 model-year test vehicles represented approximately 86% of the new-vehicle fleet, according to the agency’s 2023 announcement. That figure describes coverage of its selected test list, not a safety-rating result for every vehicle.
How to choose the right safe family vehicle
- Choose the body style around your family’s actual needs. Decide whether you need a compact or midsize SUV, a three-row vehicle or a minivan. Consider how often passengers use the third row, how easily children can enter and exit, and the cargo room needed with seats occupied.
- Verify the exact IIHS award eligibility. Match the vehicle’s model year and configuration to the IIHS award entry, and check any production-date condition against the vehicle’s build details.
- Check NHTSA’s exact-vehicle record. Review detailed crash and rollover results, safety concerns and open recalls for the model year you may buy. Compare overall and frontal stars only within NHTSA’s class and weight guidance.
- Install your child seat in the vehicle before deciding. Bring the seat and test it in the seating position where it will be used. Vehicle and restraint combinations differ, and NHTSA does not provide a comprehensive lookup that confirms every child seat will fit every vehicle.
- Use child-seat ease-of-use information for usability, not crash protection. NHTSA evaluates factors such as instructions, labels, securing the child and vehicle installation features. When searching for a restraint, use the child’s age, height and weight and confirm fit in the specific vehicle.
- Balance safety evidence with fit and cost. The official ratings do not combine crash protection, seating access, cargo capacity, child-seat fit and purchase budget into one family-safety score. Decide which practical needs are essential, then compare eligible vehicles on those needs.
Why there is no single safest family car
IIHS awards recognize performance against a particular year’s test criteria, while NHTSA ratings provide a separate set of crash and rollover results with comparison limits. Neither system combines those results with family-specific factors such as car-seat fit, passenger access and budget. The best-supported approach is to shortlist award-winning vehicles in the class and size you need, then verify the exact vehicle’s ratings, recalls and fit.
