That is a stated ambition, not a result: Polestar has not yet announced the successor’s specifications or price, so there is no basis for a measured head-to-head comparison.
When is the next Polestar 2 coming out?
Polestar’s 18 February 2026 announcement called the next Polestar 2 a “completely new successor” and said it is planned to launch in early 2027. The company placed it within a four-model product program scheduled over three years, but did not provide a price or technical specifications. Polestar’s announcement is the clearest official timing statement.
Polestar’s second-quarter 2026 update also described the current Polestar 2 as approaching the end of its lifecycle and reiterated the successor’s 2027 timing. That establishes a product transition, not details about the replacement. The quarterly update does not supply successor specifications.
What does Polestar mean by “beat the new i3”?
In an interview reported by Auto Express, Polestar head of driving dynamics Joakim Rydholm was asked whether the new Polestar 2 could compete with the BMW i3. His answer was: “We will beat [the new i3]; that we must.” The bracketed wording is part of the published quotation. Rydholm also said: “That’s no doubt. This is part of the game; together we lift the car industry. That’s the way it works.” Both remarks are reported by Auto Express; they express Polestar’s competitive intent, not a tested outcome.

What has BMW announced about the new i3?
BMW is further along in making public information about its car. BMW said the new i3 entered series production at Plant Munich on 6 August 2026, identifying it as the second model in the Neue Klasse. BMW’s production announcement describes the global manufacturing milestone. BMW USA separately lists the i3 Sedan as available in the United States starting in 2027. That is US-market timing, not a statement about availability in every country.

The first two figures are provisional WLTP data for a named BMW version; the US page provides separate estimates and stated charging capability. They are useful BMW specifications, but none establishes how the Polestar successor will compare.

What is still unknown about the next Polestar 2?
Polestar’s official announcements cited here do not establish the successor’s platform, dimensions, battery, range, charging rate, power, price, body style, order date, or specific launch dates by market. Those details should be treated as unannounced rather than inferred from another Polestar model or from the current Polestar 2.
That information gap prevents a meaningful ranking on range, efficiency, charging, performance, or value. Once Polestar publishes comparable details, a useful comparison will need to match market and trim, and account for independent real-world range tests, charging time over a defined battery window, handling, cabin and cargo space, software, driver assistance, warranty, service access, and delivery timing.

Why the current Polestar 2’s numbers do not answer the question
The 2026 Polestar 2 manual lists four powertrain versions. Its top speed is 205 km/h; listed 0–100 km/h acceleration is 4.2 seconds for Long range Dual motor Performance, 4.5 seconds for Long range Dual motor, 6.2 seconds for Long range Single motor, and 6.4 seconds for Standard range Single motor. The corresponding 0–60 mph figures are 4.0, 4.3, 5.9, and 6.1 seconds, respectively. These are figures for the 2026 model, not the successor. Polestar’s 2026 manual does not provide a basis for predicting the new car’s performance.
