Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe 2021 Mazda CX-5 is the best reliability-first model year to target, especially with the naturally aspirated 2.5-liter engine. It combines a mature second-generation platform with a strong J.D. Power reliability result and avoids the added turbo-specific risk of the more powerful versions. It is not a guarantee: maintenance history, recall completion, oil and cooling-system condition, and an independent inspection matter more than the year alone.
A clean 2023–2025 CX-5 can be a newer alternative, while a documented 2020 or 2022 may beat a neglected 2021. The all-new 2026 CX-5 should not yet be called the proven reliability winner because it has less long-term field history.

Direct answer: target a 2021 Mazda CX-5 with the naturally aspirated 2.5-liter engine
If reliability is your highest priority, the 2021 Mazda CX-5 with the non-turbo, naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder is the best all-around used-buying target. It is not guaranteed to be trouble-free, and a neglected 2021 can be a worse purchase than a well-maintained 2020 or 2022. However, the 2021 combines a mature second-generation design with a strong J.D. Power owner-reported reliability result and avoids the additional complexity of the turbocharged engine.

The all-new 2026 CX-5 is too new to have the same depth of long-term field history.

Why the 2021 CX-5 is the best reliability-first choice
It is late enough in the second generation to avoid first-year uncertainty
The 2017 CX-5 introduced Mazda’s second generation. The redesign was substantial, but Mazda retained the responsive 2.5-liter four-cylinder and six-speed automatic that had helped define the CX-5. By 2021, the basic platform had been in service for several years, giving repair shops, parts suppliers, and owners more experience with the vehicle.
That does not make every 2021 identical or flawless. It does mean the 2021 is a more mature target than a first-year redesign and a less speculative choice than an entirely new generation.
Its reliability evidence is stronger than the usual model-year guess
J.D. Power gives the 2021 CX-5 an 82 out of 100 Quality & Reliability score, categorized as Great. The score is based on owner-reported defects, malfunctions, and design flaws. J.D. Power also notes that previous-year data may be used when newer survey information is unavailable, so the number should be treated as useful directional evidence rather than a promise about an individual vehicle.
Consumer Reports’ model-year and owner-reported data adds important context. Reliability surveys identify tendencies across a population; they cannot tell you whether the particular CX-5 you are inspecting has been serviced properly, driven gently, overheated, or run low on oil.
The naturally aspirated engine is the safer bet for long-term simplicity
The turbocharged 2.5-liter engine is not automatically unreliable. It delivers stronger performance and can be a good choice for a buyer who values acceleration. But it adds turbocharging hardware and increases the number of expensive components involved in a potential engine-related repair.
Consumer Reports’ 2021 owner-reported data includes turbo-related oil-consumption and gasket concerns. That is an inspection warning, not proof that every turbo CX-5 will develop the same problem. Still, for a buyer choosing reliability over performance, the naturally aspirated engine is the more conservative configuration.
Which Mazda CX-5 years should you consider?
| Model year or range | How it fits a reliability-first purchase | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| 2021 | Best balanced target, especially with the naturally aspirated 2.5-liter engine. It belongs to the mature second generation and has a strong J.D. Power Quality & Reliability result. | Oil level and consumption, cooling-system history, maintenance documentation, recalls, electronics, and independent inspection. |
| 2023–2025 | Strong newer alternatives if the example is clean and properly maintained. Newer age or lower mileage can be valuable, but available evidence does not establish one of these years as the definitive reliability winner. | Condition and service history rather than simply assuming newer means better. |
| 2020 | Potentially a better purchase than a neglected 2021. The condition of the individual vehicle matters more than a one-year difference. | Same inspection process as a 2021, with particular attention to records and prior use. |
| 2022 | Still a potentially excellent used CX-5, but Consumer Reports currently describes its reliability as about average for the model year. Its updates do not provide enough evidence to displace the 2021 as the default pick. | Electronics, cooling, electrical accessories, engine-related concerns, brakes, and body hardware. |
| 2017 | Reasonable value option and the first year of the second generation, but not the unquestioned reliability champion. Consumer Reports currently rates it about average compared with other 2017 vehicles and lists one NHTSA recall on its model-year page. | Buy the vehicle’s documented condition, not the 2017 badge. Verify recalls by VIN and inspect carefully for age-related wear. |
| 2026 | All-new generation with newer technology and packaging, but not yet the proven reliability choice. Newness resets the long-term track record. | Choose it for its features, warranty, or new-car experience—not because it is automatically more reliable than a mature prior-generation CX-5. |
2021 CX-5 engine choice: naturally aspirated versus turbo
Do not assume the engine from the model year alone. Confirm the powertrain using the vehicle identification information, original window sticker, service records, or a careful inspection. For a reliability-first purchase, use this decision rule:

- Why Choose YITAMOTOR: Our floor mats for cars are processed with advanced technology, rendering tailored protection and all-weather guards to your vehicle
- Choose the naturally aspirated 2.5-liter if you want the simplest risk profile and do not need the turbo’s extra performance.
- Consider the turbocharged 2.5-liter if acceleration is important enough to justify more careful scrutiny of oil level, oil-change records, spark-plug service, and any engine or gasket work.
- Do not reject a turbo automatically. A well-documented turbo can be a better purchase than an abused non-turbo vehicle.
There is also no universal reliability verdict between front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. If you buy an AWD CX-5, inspect the driveline and differential for abnormal noise and make sure the tires are properly matched. AWD equipment adds components that should be checked, but the presence of AWD alone does not prove that a vehicle is unreliable.
Maintenance records that should accompany a used CX-5
Mazda’s U.S. maintenance schedule for the 2021 CX-5 says vehicles using flexible oil maintenance should receive engine oil and filter service no later than 12 months or 7,500 miles, whichever comes first. Follow the vehicle’s specific schedule and any more frequent interval required by severe driving conditions.
The schedule also specifies recurring replacement of the engine air filter and cabin air filter. Spark-plug intervals differ by engine: Mazda lists 75,000 miles for the naturally aspirated 2.5-liter and 40,000 miles for the 2.5-liter turbo. Missing paperwork does not automatically mean the work was skipped, but it gives you less evidence and should affect the offer or the decision to walk away.
When reviewing a seller’s records, look for:
- Consistent oil and filter changes with dates and mileage.
- Evidence that the correct spark-plug interval was followed for the engine installed.
- Engine and cabin air-filter service rather than only oil changes.
- Documentation for cooling-system, engine-warning-light, or oil-consumption repairs.
- Brake, tire, battery, and suspension work appropriate to the vehicle’s mileage and use.
- Recall repairs recorded by a Mazda dealer or confirmed through the VIN.
Because filter replacement is part of scheduled upkeep, a Mazda CX-5 cabin air filter can be a sensible ownership purchase. A replacement engine air filter is also a legitimate maintenance item. Verify fitment by model year, engine, drivetrain, and trim before ordering either part; similar-looking CX-5 filters are not automatically interchangeable.
Used Mazda CX-5 inspection checklist
1. Check the individual VIN for open recalls
Use the vehicle’s 17-character VIN or license plate with the NHTSA recall lookup. Open safety recalls should be repaired free by a local dealership. A model-year recall count is not a substitute for a VIN search: it cannot tell you whether the particular vehicle has already been repaired or whether a recall is still open.
A vehicle history report can add title, accident, registration, and reported service information before you buy, but it is not a replacement for the official recall lookup or an in-person inspection. Reports can contain incomplete information.
2. Check the oil level and investigate any consumption
Inspect the dipstick according to Mazda’s procedure, preferably when the vehicle is on level ground and the engine has been given the appropriate time to settle. Ask how much oil the owner adds between changes. Review invoices for repeated low-oil warnings, engine work, gasket replacement, or unexplained top-offs.
Pay especially close attention to this step on turbocharged models because Consumer Reports’ owner-reported data identifies oil-consumption and gasket concerns as areas worth checking. A clean dipstick on inspection is helpful, but it does not prove that the engine has never consumed oil between services.

3. Inspect the cooling system
Look for coolant loss, dried residue, overheating history, temperature-control-valve work, and unexplained engine-warning lights. During the test drive, watch for abnormal temperature behavior and ask directly whether the vehicle has ever overheated. Cooling-system problems deserve a professional diagnosis before purchase rather than a promise from the seller that the issue is minor.
4. Test every electronic and convenience feature
Confirm that the infotainment screen, backup camera, Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, power liftgate, seat controls, mirrors, and driver-assistance features work correctly. Test these features both at startup and during the drive. Electronics and electrical accessories are among the trouble areas identified in owner-reported information for the 2022 model year.
Do not treat a warning light as a harmless annoyance. Have any warning light scanned and diagnosed before negotiating a final price. An OBD-II diagnostic scanner can be a useful supplemental screening tool for stored fault codes, but it cannot replace a mechanic, a road test, or the official VIN recall check.
5. Evaluate AWD and tires when equipped
On an AWD CX-5, listen for driveline or differential noise during acceleration, deceleration, and tight low-speed turns. Check that all four tires are properly matched in brand, type, size, and general wear. Mismatched tires can create unnecessary stress in an AWD system and may indicate that the vehicle has not been maintained carefully.

6. Pay for an independent pre-purchase inspection
A seller’s inspection or a quick dealership walk-around is not enough for a reliability-first purchase. Use an independent mechanic who can inspect the underside, scan the vehicle, assess leaks and suspension components, verify cooling-system condition, and evaluate any turbo-specific concerns.
Reliability surveys describe population-level patterns. Only an inspection can tell you whether the actual CX-5 has hidden damage, poor repairs, leaks, worn components, or warning signs that make the model-year recommendation irrelevant.
What should make you lower the offer or walk away?
- No credible oil-change history or long unexplained gaps in maintenance.
- An engine that is low on oil without a convincing explanation.
- Evidence of repeated overheating, coolant loss, or unresolved temperature-control problems.
- Turbocharger, gasket, or engine repairs with no supporting invoices or diagnosis.
- Multiple warning lights, nonfunctional driver-assistance equipment, or a backup camera that does not work.
- Unmatched AWD tires combined with driveline noise.
- An open safety recall that the seller has not arranged to repair.
- A seller who will not provide the VIN or allow an independent inspection.
These conditions do not necessarily mean the vehicle cannot be repaired. They mean you should not pay a premium simply because the title says 2021. The cost and uncertainty of correcting an undocumented problem can outweigh the benefit of buying the preferred model year.

Reliability and safety should be evaluated separately. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety lists the 2023 Mazda CX-5 as a Top Safety Pick, and identifies 2017 as the redesign year for the second generation. That is useful safety context, but a rating from one model year should not automatically be transferred to another. Verify the exact year, equipment, and current test results for the vehicle you are considering.

The best Mazda CX-5 buying strategy
- Start with the configuration: search first for a 2021 naturally aspirated 2.5-liter CX-5.
- Filter for documentation: prioritize vehicles with consistent oil records, filter service, correct spark-plug maintenance, and no unexplained engine or cooling work.
- Run the VIN: check open recalls through NHTSA and review title, accident, and service information in a vehicle history report.
- Inspect the vehicle cold: check oil level, coolant condition, warning lights, leaks, tires, and startup behavior before the test drive.
- Test everything: operate the infotainment, cameras, connectivity, liftgate, seats, mirrors, and driver-assistance features.
- Pay for an independent inspection: do this before making the purchase nonrefundable.
- Broaden the search intelligently: consider a documented 2020 or 2022, or a clean 2023–2025 model, if its condition is clearly superior to the 2021 examples available.
Final verdict
The 2021 Mazda CX-5 with the naturally aspirated 2.5-liter engine is the safest all-around answer to the question of which CX-5 model year to buy for reliability. It is a mature second-generation vehicle, earns a strong 82/100 J.D. Power Quality & Reliability score, and avoids the additional turbo-specific risk that matters to conservative used-car buyers.
That recommendation is a starting point, not a substitute for due diligence. A documented, inspected 2020, 2022, or 2023–2025 CX-5 can be a better purchase than a neglected 2021. The 2017 is a reasonable value option, but not a proven champion, and the all-new 2026 is too early in its life cycle to call the established reliability winner.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the 2021 Mazda CX-5 turbo reliable?
For a reliability-first purchase, the non-turbo 2.5-liter is the more conservative choice because it avoids the turbocharger’s additional complexity and expensive failure exposure. A well-maintained turbo can still be a good vehicle, but inspect its oil level, service records, spark-plug history, and any engine or gasket work more carefully.
Is a 2022 Mazda CX-5 more reliable than a 2021?
Yes, a 2022 can still be an excellent used vehicle if it has complete records and passes inspection. However, Consumer Reports currently describes 2022 reliability as about average for the model year and identifies electronics, cooling, electrical accessories, engine-related concerns, brakes, and body hardware as areas to inspect. That is why it does not displace the 2021 naturally aspirated CX-5 as the default recommendation.
Is the 2017 Mazda CX-5 a good year to buy?
The 2017 is a reasonable value choice because it began the second-generation CX-5, but it should not be labeled the most reliable year automatically. Consumer Reports currently describes it as about average compared with other 2017 vehicles. Buy based on service history and inspection results, and verify the individual VIN for recalls.
Should I buy the all-new 2026 Mazda CX-5 for reliability?
The 2026 CX-5 is an all-new generation, so it may offer newer technology, packaging, comfort, and safety improvements. But it has less long-term field history than the mature prior generation. Buyers seeking the newest vehicle may reasonably choose it; buyers seeking proven reliability should wait for more multi-year data or choose a well-documented earlier CX-5.
What maintenance records should a used CX-5 have?
Mazda’s U.S. 2021 schedule specifies oil and filter service no later than 12 months or 7,500 miles under flexible oil maintenance. It also includes recurring engine and cabin air-filter replacement. Spark plugs are listed at 75,000 miles for the naturally aspirated 2.5-liter and 40,000 miles for the turbocharged 2.5-liter. The vehicle’s exact schedule and driving conditions should always be checked.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Shop first for a well-maintained 2021 Mazda CX-5 with the naturally aspirated 2.5-liter engine. Confirm the VIN has no open recalls, investigate oil and cooling-system history, test the electronics and AWD system if equipped, and obtain an independent inspection before buying.
