The BMW B48 is a modular 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine family, not one mechanically identical engine. BMW and MINI use different B48 suffixes, calibrations, turbo and intake arrangements, emissions systems, transmissions, and hybrid configurations across models and markets. That is why published output ranges from 204 hp to 255 hp in the road-car examples covered here, while a specialized B48-based racing engine produces 313 hp.

Overall, the B48 has a strong case as a modern, widely deployed BMW Group engine, but reliability claims must remain specific. Cooling-system and sealing repairs are documented for certain applications; they should not be inflated into a universal defect or used to predict the life of every B48.

What is the BMW B48 engine?

The BMW B48 is a modular 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline inline-four used across a wide range of BMW and MINI vehicles. It is not one fixed specification: B48 suffixes, calibrations, turbo and intake hardware, emissions equipment, transmissions, packaging, and hybrid systems vary by vehicle, production date, and market.

Representative B48-family engines use BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, high-precision fuel injection, VALVETRONIC fully variable valve control, and Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing. BMW technical material groups related B46TU and B48TU engines together, while later versions introduce more substantial changes than software calibration alone. The safest way to identify a particular engine is by its full suffix and VIN—not simply by calling it a B48.

In road cars, published examples range from 204 hp in a 2024 MINI Cooper S to 255 hp in a 2025 BMW 430i Gran Coupe. A specialized BMW M Motorsport racing application produces 313 hp, but that competition engine is not a normal road-car benchmark. The B48 is therefore best understood as a broad, adaptable engine family with generally strong real-world appeal, rather than an engine with one universal power figure or reliability rating.

BMW B48 specifications

The following is a family-level summary. It describes representative applications and must not be read as a specification sheet for every B48 suffix.

Specification Representative B48-family description
Configuration Four-cylinder inline gasoline engine
Displacement 1,998 cc
Bore 94.6 mm in documented BMW/MINI applications
Stroke 82.0 mm in documented BMW/MINI applications
Induction Turbocharged BMW TwinPower Turbo system
Valve control VALVETRONIC variable valve lift and Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing in documented applications
Fuel system High-precision direct injection; some later versions add port injection
Combustion strategy Conventional and Miller-cycle variants exist
Hybridization Some later applications use a 48V mild-hybrid system
Road-car output Application-dependent; documented examples range from 204 hp to 255 hp

BMW and MINI documentation supports the representative dimensions and equipment above. The BMW B46TU/B48TU technical-training material is useful for understanding the architecture, but it is not automatically a complete repair manual for every B48-powered vehicle.

Why B48 output varies so much

BMW changes the engine package to suit the vehicle and market. Differences can include turbocharger specification, intake and exhaust routing, fuel-system hardware, cooling, engine software, emissions equipment, transmission integration, and—in newer models—hybrid support. Consequently, a 204-hp MINI engine, a 255-hp 430i engine, and a lower-output X1 engine may share the B48 family designation while having meaningful differences in calibration and supporting hardware.

Later B48 revisions also use a Miller combustion cycle in certain applications. BMW’s 2025 2 Series Gran Coupe material describes the B48A20O2 as having Miller-cycle combustion, dual direct-and-port injection, and revised combustion-chamber geometry. The 2025 430i Gran Coupe’s B48B20O2 adds revised intake ports and combustion chambers, camshaft control, injection, ignition, exhaust-gas routing, and a 48V mild-hybrid system. These are engineering revisions, not merely new software labels. See BMW’s 2025 2 Series Gran Coupe specifications and 2025 430i Gran Coupe specifications for the relevant examples.

The MINI figures come from its official 2024 specification sheet for the B48A20M2. BMW Motorsport’s M2 Racing figure comes from a specialized race-car application and should not be used to predict the output, durability, or tuning limit of a street B48. The race engine has motorsport-specific software, exhaust, cooling, and drivetrain integration. BMW’s MINI Cooper S specification and M2 Racing technical release provide the source figures.

For historical context, BMW’s U.S. announcement for the 2017 2 Series listed the 230i Coupe and Convertible with the latest-generation 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 248 hp and 258 lb-ft. That release is useful evidence of the B48-era transition, but it does not establish that every market, body style, or production period used the same suffix or calibration. (BMW’s 2017 2 Series announcement.)

Which BMW and MINI models use the B48?

B48 applications vary by market and model year. Representative BMW applications include four-cylinder versions of the 2 Series, 3 Series, 4 Series, X1, and X2. BMW’s current U.S. model catalog lists 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder versions of vehicles such as the X1 xDrive28i, X2 xDrive28i, 230i, and 330i. Consumer model pages often show displacement and marketing names rather than the internal engine suffix, so they are evidence of an application—not a complete B48 fitment database. Check BMW’s current U.S. model catalog for market-specific availability.

Representative application groups

  • BMW 2 Series: The 230i is an important early B48-era rear-wheel-drive application in the U.S.; later 2 Series vehicles use different layouts and engine versions depending on body style and market.
  • BMW 3 Series: Four-cylinder 3 Series models such as the 330i use B48-family engines in some markets and model years.
  • BMW 4 Series: The 430i is a higher-output four-cylinder application; the 2025 430i Gran Coupe example uses the B48B20O2 and a 48V mild-hybrid system.
  • BMW X1 and X2: Current four-cylinder xDrive28i versions are representative SUV applications, with packaging and drivetrain integration differing from rear-drive cars.
  • MINI: The Cooper S is a major B48-family application. Its transverse, front-wheel-drive-oriented packaging, transmission, software, and cooling integration differ from many BMW installations.
  • Motorsport: The BMW M2 Racing uses a B48-based four-cylinder racing engine. It demonstrates the family’s engineering range, not direct road-car parts interchangeability.

For a used car, the VIN build sheet, diagnostic identification, production date, and market-specific parts catalog are more reliable than a forum list of B48 models. Even a familiar badge such as 330i or Cooper S can cover more than one engine revision over its production run.

Is the BMW B48 reliable?

The honest answer is qualified: the B48 is a mature and widely deployed engine family, but there is no defensible universal reliability score, guaranteed service life, or basis for saying every B48 revision is equally durable. Ownership outcomes depend on the exact revision, cooling-system condition, maintenance history, calibration, vehicle packaging, and how the car has been driven or modified.

Official service documents do identify specific repair patterns in specific applications. That is useful evidence for inspection, but it is not the same as a failure-rate study. A bulletin shows that BMW documented a condition and prescribed a repair; it does not show what percentage of engines experience it or when an individual engine will fail.

Documented cooling-system and sealing concerns

Documented issue What the evidence says What a buyer should do
Coolant line or expansion-tank breathing-line issue BMW issued a limited-warranty extension for a high-temperature coolant-line issue on specified G12/G30 vehicles and specified B46/B48 applications. The repair process includes diagnosing the leak and, where applicable, replacing the cylinder-head-to-expansion-tank coolant line. Confirm applicability by VIN, chassis, production date, and engine code. Look for coolant residue, unexplained loss, or records of the repair.
Oil-filter-housing coolant leak A BMW/NHTSA-hosted bulletin dated December 19, 2025 describes coolant leaking from the oil-filter housing on a B48P application and directs replacement of the housing gaskets and a redesigned bushing or insert where applicable. Inspect the housing and surrounding area on affected vehicles, but do not assume the bulletin applies to every B48. Verify by VIN and chassis.

Read the BMW coolant-line warranty-extension document and the oil-filter-housing bulletin for the documented scope and repair directions.

Do not confuse an N20/N26 recall with a B48 issue

A water-pump electrical-connector recall often appears in online BMW reliability discussions, but the BMW recall document identified in this research covers specified 2012–2018 vehicles with N20 or N26 engines. It is not evidence of a general B48 recall. Recall applicability must always be checked using the vehicle identification number through BMW or the relevant national safety agency. The NHTSA recall document identifies the affected engine families.

Used BMW B48 buying and inspection checklist

A well-documented, unmodified example is more important than a generic reputation for the engine family. Use this process when evaluating a used BMW or MINI.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify the exact engine. Record the VIN, chassis, production date, market, drivetrain, and full engine suffix. Do not rely solely on the badge, advertised displacement, or a previous owner’s description.
  2. Check recalls and service campaigns. Search the VIN through BMW and NHTSA or the relevant authority. Never assume that a recall mentioned in a forum applies to the car in front of you.
  3. Review service documentation. Look for oil changes, cooling-system work, software or diagnostic records, warranty repairs, and invoices that name the actual parts used. Repeated coolant top-ups without a documented diagnosis deserve particular caution.
  4. Inspect the cooling system cold. Look for dried coolant residue, staining around the expansion tank and lines, dampness, a persistent coolant smell, or evidence that the reservoir has been repeatedly filled. Never remove a coolant cap while the system is hot.
  5. Inspect the oil-filter housing where applicable. Check for coolant or oil residue around the housing and nearby components, then match the finding to the correct bulletin and VIN applicability. A generic internet photograph is not enough to identify the correct repair kit.
  6. Perform a BMW-capable diagnostic scan. Scan before driving if possible, record stored and pending faults, and review misfire, cooling, boost, and emissions-related data with someone who understands BMW diagnostics. A clear scan is helpful but does not prove that the engine is problem-free.
  7. Test-drive from cold to fully warm. Watch for warning messages, overheating behavior, rough running, hesitation, smoke, unusual turbo noises, or a loss of power. Test the car under light and moderate load, not only during a short parking-lot drive.
  8. Check modifications. Ask whether the car has been tuned, fitted with aftermarket boost hardware, or used for track driving. Modified cars require more scrutiny of cooling, fueling, service intervals, and transmission behavior.
  9. Confirm parts and fluid fitment before purchase. Engine suffix and production date can change the correct line, gasket, filter, oil specification, coolant procedure, and software. A parts listing that merely says B48 is not sufficient.

For technical research, a BMW B48 engine repair manual or B48 technical reference manual can be useful, but check the edition, language, chassis coverage, and whether it is a training reference or a step-by-step consumer repair manual. BMW’s own B46TU/B48TU training document is a strong architecture reference, not proof that one publication covers every BMW and MINI repair procedure.

BMW B48 maintenance guidance

There is no single oil capacity, oil viscosity, coolant procedure, or service interval that applies to every B48. Follow the specific BMW or MINI service schedule and fluid specification for the VIN, engine revision, market, and model year. The vehicle’s Condition Based Service display is a starting point, while severe use, repeated short trips, track driving, or modifications may justify a more conservative maintenance plan decided with a qualified technician.

Practical ownership habits

  • Monitor the coolant level and investigate any unexplained loss promptly instead of repeatedly topping up the reservoir.
  • Ask for a leak inspection whenever the car is serviced, especially if there is coolant odor or residue.
  • Keep invoices that identify the engine application and exact replacement parts.
  • Use the vehicle-specific BMW/MINI-approved oil specification, filter, and coolant rather than selecting products only by the B48 name.
  • Use BMW-approved coolant such as HT-12 only where it is specified for the vehicle and repair; do not assume that one coolant can be mixed into every BMW cooling system.
  • After cooling-system work, ensure the system is filled and bled according to the vehicle-specific repair procedure.
  • Deal with warning lights and overheating symptoms immediately. Continuing to drive after coolant loss can turn a manageable leak into major engine damage.

BMW repair documentation for the relevant cases identifies BMW-approved engine oil and HT-12 coolant among the service materials. That does not establish a universal oil grade, capacity, or coolant requirement for all B48 vehicles. If you are preparing for scheduled service, compare the VIN-specific specification before buying a BMW-approved B48 engine oil, B48 oil filter, or BMW HT-12 coolant.

B48 tuning and performance potential

The B48’s modular design and wide factory output range make it attractive to tuners, but factory specifications and aftermarket claims should be kept separate. A calibration that is safe for one suffix and turbo package may not be appropriate for another. The relevant variables include turbocharger hardware, intercooling and cooling capacity, fuel system, engine software, emissions equipment, transmission limits, and the condition of the individual engine.

The 313-hp M2 Racing example proves only that BMW Motorsport developed a substantially different B48-based package for competition. It does not establish a safe street-car horsepower limit, a guaranteed gain from a tune, or interchangeability of race and road-car parts. Any tuning decision should be based on the exact vehicle, tested parts combination, fuel, climate, maintenance condition, and local emissions requirements.

Be cautious with claims that a tune will deliver a specific horsepower figure or improve reliability. Without independent testing on the exact car, those numbers are not factory specifications. A used B48 that has already been tuned should be inspected for fault history, cooling performance, service records, and evidence of repeated hard use before purchase.

Common B48 questions

Is the B48 a 2.0-liter engine? Yes. Representative B48 applications displace 1,998 cc, with a 94.6-mm bore and 82.0-mm stroke. The hardware and calibration around that displacement vary by suffix and vehicle.

How much horsepower does a B48 make? It depends on the application. Official examples include 204 hp in the 2024 MINI Cooper S, 241 hp in the 2025 BMW 228 xDrive Gran Coupe, and 255 hp in the 2025 BMW 430i Gran Coupe. The 313-hp M2 Racing engine is a specialized motorsport example.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is every B48 turbo and fuel system the same? No. BMW uses different turbo, intake, injection, emissions, calibration, and hybrid configurations across the family. Later applications can use dual direct-and-port injection and Miller-cycle combustion.

What is the most important B48 used-car check? Identify the exact engine and VIN first, then verify recalls and applicable service documents. After that, inspect for coolant loss or residue, check the oil-filter housing where relevant, scan the car with BMW-capable equipment, and review maintenance and modification history.

Does the B48 have a universal coolant-line defect? No universal claim is supported. BMW documented a coolant-line repair and warranty extension for specified applications, but applicability depends on vehicle details. A separate BMW bulletin documents an oil-filter-housing coolant leak on a specified B48P application.

Does the N20/N26 water-pump recall apply to the B48? The recall document identified in this guide concerns specified vehicles with N20 or N26 engines, not a general B48 population. Check the VIN rather than transferring recall advice from another engine family.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the BMW B48 a 2.0-liter engine?

Yes, in representative applications. The B48 displaces 1,998 cc, but turbo hardware, injection, calibration, emissions equipment, and hybrid systems vary by suffix and vehicle.

How much horsepower does the B48 make?

Official examples range from 204 hp in a 2024 MINI Cooper S to 255 hp in a 2025 BMW 430i Gran Coupe. A 313-hp B48-based M2 Racing engine is a specialized motorsport application, not a normal road-car specification.

Does every B48 have a coolant or oil-filter-housing problem?

No. BMW documented coolant-line and oil-filter-housing repair conditions for specified applications, but neither bulletin proves that every B48 has the same issue. Confirm applicability by VIN, chassis, production date, and engine code.

Does the N20/N26 water-pump recall apply to B48 engines?

The recall document discussed in this guide identifies specified 2012–2018 vehicles with N20 or N26 engines. It should not be treated as a general B48 recall. Use a VIN-based recall lookup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I check before buying a used B48 BMW or MINI?

Start with the VIN and full engine suffix, then check recalls, service records, coolant residue or loss, applicable oil-filter-housing concerns, diagnostic faults, and modifications. A BMW-capable pre-purchase scan is useful but does not replace a mechanical inspection.

The Bottom Line

The BMW B48 is a capable, widely used 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four family—not one identical engine. Its strongest advantages are compact displacement, broad factory deployment, strong mid-range torque, and ongoing development into Miller-cycle and 48V mild-hybrid versions. Its reliability should be judged by the exact suffix, vehicle, maintenance history, cooling-system condition, and modifications.

For buyers, VIN-specific research matters more than internet-wide engine rankings. Confirm recalls, inspect for coolant and oil-filter-housing leaks where applicable, scan the car properly, and verify every fluid or replacement part against the vehicle’s exact specification.
