J.D. Power’s 2024 Vehicle Dependability Study placed each at the top of its respective premium-SUV segment. The result is useful, but it measures problems reported by owners of three-year-old vehicles, so it is evidence about dependability—not a guarantee that every 2024 model will be trouble-free.
The luxury SUVs with the best 2024 dependability results
J.D. Power’s 2024 Dependability Awards are the clearest apples-to-apples comparison in the available evidence. The study collected responses from more than 80,000 verified owners of three-year-old vehicles and counted problems experienced during the previous 12 months. Its segment leaders were:

The X1 and NX are not identical vehicles: J.D. Power places them in different size categories. Treat them as neighboring choices for a smaller luxury SUV, not as a direct class match. The RX and X6 also serve different priorities, with the RX using a conventional midsize-SUV format and the X6 emphasizing its sloping roofline.

At the brand level, J.D. Power reported the following premium-brand results in 2024. The score is the number of problems per 100 vehicles; a lower number indicates better dependability under this study’s method.

These are brand averages, not guarantees for an individual SUV. A Porsche brand score does not make every Cayenne more dependable than every Lexus or BMW, and a BMW score does not override the model-specific segment results above.
Consumer Reports provides a separate, broader cross-check. Its 2024 survey represented about 300,000 vehicle owners and ranked Lexus second among all brands, Toyota third and Acura fifth. Because Consumer Reports and J.D. Power use different samples, questions and calculations, their rankings should be treated as complementary rather than merged into a single score.
Lexus NX versus Lexus RX
Lexus NX: the compact choice
The NX is the evidence-based pick when you want a smaller premium crossover. Its compact classification makes it easier to position in urban driving and parking situations than a midsize SUV. The principal trade-off is space: shoppers who regularly carry several adults or bulky cargo should compare the NX’s cabin and cargo area with the RX in person.

Reliability evidence for the NX still needs a vehicle-specific check. Consumer Reports’ Lexus history pages identify recalls affecting certain NX model years, and recall campaigns can be added or amended after an article is published. Verify the exact vehicle identification number through the current manufacturer or government recall database before signing a purchase contract.
Lexus RX: the midsize choice
The RX is the stronger fit when comfort and additional room matter more than compact exterior dimensions. It led J.D. Power’s midsize premium SUV category, giving it the most directly relevant dependability result for shoppers in that class.
Consumer Reports says its Lexus reliability-history charts draw on about 380,000 vehicles across 20 potential problem areas. That history is useful context, but it covers multiple model years and is not a promise that every RX, including a newer one, will reproduce the same experience. Certain RX model years also appear in recall listings, so use the VIN-specific check rather than relying on a model name alone.

BMW X1 versus BMW X6
BMW X1: small SUV with the strongest BMW segment result
The X1 combines the small-premium-SUV category with BMW’s more engaging driving orientation. It makes sense for a buyer who wants a relatively compact luxury vehicle and is prepared to compare service support, insurance pricing and repair exposure with the Lexus NX.
Its J.D. Power result describes three-year dependability. It does not establish five-year repair costs or prove that a new X1 will have fewer issues throughout its entire ownership period.
BMW X6: upper-midsize, coupé-style packaging
The X6 led the upper-midsize premium SUV segment. Its sloping, coupé-like body is the defining packaging choice: it may appeal to drivers who value styling and a sportier presentation, while a traditional SUV shape generally offers a more straightforward approach to rear-seat and cargo utility.

J.D. Power’s upper-midsize context also mentions the Porsche Cayenne and BMW X5 among the top three, but the source identifies the X6 as the segment leader. Neither the Cayenne nor the X5 should be presented as the overall winner on this evidence.

It is a three-year dependability snapshot
The 2024 J.D. Power study measures problems experienced in the preceding 12 months by owners of three-year-old vehicles. In practical terms, the results primarily reflect 2021 model-year vehicles, not a complete ownership history for 2024 vehicles. They are most useful for comparing relative dependability among established models.

Survey scores capture the problems owners noticed and reported. They do not equal a laboratory failure rate, and they do not count every repair bill in a standardized five-year ownership-cost calculation.

There is no uniform five-year cost ranking here
The available evidence does not provide a consistent five-year repair-cost table covering every SUV in this comparison. Reliability and total cost are related but different questions: a vehicle can rank well for reported problems while still carrying higher parts, labor or insurance costs than a non-luxury alternative.

- Confirm the exact model year. The 2024 J.D. Power results primarily represent 2021 vehicles, so do not treat the ranking as a direct forecast for every newer model.
- Run a VIN-specific recall search. Recall status can change, and Consumer Reports identifies recalls affecting certain NX and RX model years.
- Review maintenance and service access. Ask for documented service, identify an authorized dealer or qualified independent specialist nearby, and obtain a written estimate for routine work.
- Price insurance before purchase. Luxury-SUV premiums vary by model, location, driver profile and coverage, and the dependability studies do not provide an insurance ranking.
- Inspect the individual vehicle. A clean service history, inspection and diagnostic scan can matter more than a small difference between survey scores.
Bottom line: The Lexus NX and RX offer the strongest Lexus choices for compact and midsize buyers, while the BMW X1 and X6 lead their respective smaller and upper-midsize J.D. Power categories. Use those results as a starting point, then validate the specific vehicle’s recalls, service history and ownership costs before buying.
