The range headline applies to a family with two body styles: a conventional sedan and the SEAL 6 DM-i TOURING estate. They share the electric-first plug-in-hybrid concept, but their certified figures differ.
Official range and efficiency figures
BYD has published several figures for different markets, body styles and certification documents. They are not interchangeable, so the test cycle and configuration matter.

The different totals do not necessarily indicate a technical change. Certification results can vary with body style, trim, wheels, battery state assumptions and regional test procedures. A kilometre figure from one cycle should not be converted into a universal real-world promise or compared directly with a miles figure from another test without checking the underlying method.
Where the 1,243-mile claim fits
The available European BYD material does not confirm 1,243 miles for the SEAL 6 DM-i. That number should therefore be attributed to its original market and test cycle if the source can be documented. Without that source, it is an unverified headline claim rather than a confirmed European rating.

Even a certified combined-range result represents a prescribed laboratory procedure. Actual distance depends on outside temperature, motorway speed, traffic, terrain, payload, heating or air-conditioning use, tyre pressures and how often the battery is recharged. Plugging in regularly is central to achieving the low fuel-use result advertised for a plug-in hybrid; a depleted battery will produce a different consumption pattern.

How far can it drive on electricity?
BYD’s published electric-only ratings are intended to cover many daily commutes without starting the petrol engine, provided the vehicle begins with a charged battery. The sedan has the higher stated electric range, while the Touring trades some certified range for its larger load area. Electric-only distance in normal driving will vary for the same reasons that affect combined range, especially cold weather and sustained high speed.

Sedan or Touring: which is more practical?
SEAL 6 DM-i sedan
The sedan is the longer-range choice in BYD’s model-specific European figures and may suit drivers who prioritise maximum certified distance and saloon styling. A UK specification sheet lists boot capacity of 491 litres with the seats in use and 1,370 litres with them folded.
SEAL 6 DM-i TOURING
The wagon is aimed at buyers who need a more useful rear opening and flexible cargo area. BYD quotes up to 1,535 litres of Touring boot space. Its published combined and electric ranges are lower than the sedan’s, reflecting the different body configuration and certification result.

What to check before buying
- Local trim: Confirm the exact battery, engine, wheel and equipment specification behind the advertised range.
- Test cycle: Check whether the number is WLTP or another regional certification result, and whether it is a sedan or Touring figure.
- Charging hardware and time: Ask the dealer for the onboard charger rating, compatible charging equipment and official charge-time figures for your market.
- Battery-depleted economy: Request consumption data for journeys after the usable battery charge is exhausted, not only the weighted plug-in result.
- Ownership support: Verify warranty terms, servicing intervals, parts availability and the local authorised dealer network.
- Price and delivery: BYD announced ordering in multiple European markets with first deliveries expected before the end of 2025, but current price, stock and delivery timing are country-specific and should be confirmed with an authorised dealer.
Is it an efficiency benchmark?
The SEAL 6 DM-i is notable for combining a substantial certified total range with a low weighted fuel-consumption figure and a meaningful electric-only allowance. That makes it potentially efficient for drivers who charge frequently and mostly use the car within its electric range. It is not proof that every trip will achieve the laboratory result, nor does the headline establish that it is the longest-range hybrid in every market.
