Most 2024 cars still wore white, gray, black, or silver—but the most memorable new colors appeared on the vehicles and trims where automakers could take more risks. Porsche, Lexus, and Toyota introduced richer blues, copper, gold, earthy tones, and two-tone combinations for selected models rather than abandoning the neutral-color market altogether.
Most 2024 cars still wore white, gray, black, or silver—but the most memorable new colors appeared on the vehicles and trims where automakers could take more risks. Porsche added richer blues and a warm gold to the Panamera palette, Lexus brought copper and saturated blue to the LC, and Toyota used earthy colors and two-tone roofs to reinforce the outdoor identity of its TRD Pro and Woodland models.
That makes the 2024 color story less a return to universally bright cars and more a story of targeted experimentation. Neutral finishes remained dominant across the broader market, while luxury, enthusiast, off-road, and special-edition vehicles received more expressive choices.
Neutral colors still dominated the 2024 market
Industry color reports provide important context, but they do not answer exactly the same question as a list of new model-year paint colors.

Axalta’s 2024 Global Automotive Color Popularity Report identified white as the leading automotive color worldwide and noted continued interest in classic colors with effect-oriented finishes, such as metallic and other surface treatments. [c001]
BASF’s 2024 report for the Americas found gray to be the region’s major movement, accounting for approximately 20% of the market. BASF also reported declines in white and black compared with the previous year. Its explanation for gray’s appeal is useful: gray can range from cool, technical metallics to warmer, earthier shades while still looking premium and versatile. [c002]
Those reports measure color distributions in vehicle production or registrations. They should not be read as a ranking of newly launched paint names. A color can be statistically uncommon yet highly visible in automotive marketing if it is attached to a sports car, luxury coupe, or limited trim.
| What the data shows | What the new-color launches show |
|---|---|
| White, gray, black, and silver remained central to the market. | Automakers continued to develop distinctive colors for selected models and grades. |
| Gray gained ground in the Americas. | Warm metallics, vivid blues, earthy tones, and two-tone combinations received attention. |
| Neutral finishes remained easy to position and broadly appealing. | More adventurous colors were used to express luxury, performance, or outdoor capability. |
Porsche’s 2024 palette: expressive without abandoning sophistication
Porsche’s new Panamera color selection captured the broader tension particularly well. The automaker highlighted Montego Blue Metallic, Ice Grey Metallic, Lugano Blue, and Madeira Gold Metallic among the fresh exterior choices. [c003]
Montego Blue Metallic and Lugano Blue gave buyers richer blue alternatives to the usual black, white, and silver. The two blues also illustrate that “colorful” does not necessarily mean neon or excessively loud: a deep, carefully finished blue can remain restrained while adding considerably more personality than a neutral paint.
Madeira Gold Metallic moved in a warmer direction. Porsche described it as a cognac-like metallic shade, placing it closer to a rich brown-gold or warm luxury finish than to a bright yellow. It is the kind of color that changes noticeably with sunlight and viewing angle, making the finish part of the car’s visual character.
Ice Grey Metallic showed the other side of Porsche’s strategy. Gray was not treated simply as a default neutral; it was positioned within a more considered family of gray and silver tones. That distinction matters because modern gray finishes can be cool, matte-looking, highly metallic, or warm and earthy while remaining commercially safe.

Porsche’s color categories turn paint into a lifestyle choice
Porsche also reorganized its color program into four expressive groups: Contrasts, Shades, Dreams, and Legends. [c003] The categories suggest that the company is selling more than a paint chip. A customer can choose a color based on the identity they want the car to project—subtle, dramatic, nostalgic, or aspirational.

Lexus brought copper and saturated blue to the LC
Lexus added Copper Crest and Ultrasonic Blue Mica 2.0 as new exterior options for the 2024 LC 500 and LC 500h. [c004]
Copper Crest represented the warm-metallic trend. Copper has more visual warmth than silver and a more mature, less conventional feel than a basic gold. On a low, sculpted luxury coupe, it can emphasize body contours that would be less obvious in a flat black or white finish.
Ultrasonic Blue Mica 2.0 took the opposite route: a saturated, high-impact blue intended to make the LC’s dramatic shape more conspicuous. Metallic and mica effects can add depth, but they also make accurate repairs more dependent on the correct paint formula and application technique.

The important qualification is model scope. These colors were new options for the LC line; they do not mean that every 2024 Lexus was available in Copper Crest or Ultrasonic Blue Mica 2.0. [c004]
Toyota used earthy colors and two-tone roofs to emphasize adventure
Toyota’s 2024 announcements showed how color can be tied directly to a vehicle’s intended lifestyle. Terra became a new TRD Pro-exclusive color for the 2024 Tundra, 4Runner, and Tacoma. [c005]

The earthy shade fit the visual language of off-road vehicles: natural, rugged, and less urban than a conventional metallic gray. Making it TRD Pro-exclusive also gave the color a role beyond appearance. It helped separate the performance-oriented off-road grade from less specialized versions of the same vehicle.
Toyota also expanded its use of two-tone and outdoor-oriented combinations. The 2024 RAV4 Woodland Edition offered Army Green or Ice Cap paired with a Midnight Black Metallic roof. [c005]

Army Green reinforced the Woodland Edition’s outdoor theme, while Ice Cap offered a lighter alternative. The black roof added contrast and visually separated the upper portion of the vehicle from the body.
Toyota specified color availability by grade, so these combinations should not be generalized to every 2024 RAV4 or every Toyota truck. A color may be:
- New for a particular model year;
- Exclusive to a performance or appearance grade;
- Limited to a special edition;
- Available only with a contrasting roof or another package; or
- Offered in one market but not another.
Why automakers take more color risks on certain vehicles
A bright or unusual color is easier to justify when the vehicle already has a strong emotional identity. Buyers of a luxury coupe, sports car, or off-road trim may be choosing an experience and image as much as transportation. That gives automakers more room to offer colors that would be harder to sell across a high-volume family sedan or fleet-heavy crossover.
There are several reasons this segmentation works:
- Luxury vehicles can support richer finishes. Metallic copper, gold, and nuanced blue can be marketed as premium design choices rather than simple paint.
- Performance models benefit from visual drama. A vivid blue or unusual metallic can make a low-volume enthusiast vehicle easier to distinguish.
- Off-road trims can use nature-associated colors. Earthy greens, browns, and warm grays reinforce adventure and outdoor positioning.
- Special editions need visible differentiation. A unique color or roof combination can make a package recognizable without redesigning the body.
- Neutral colors remain commercially efficient. White, gray, black, and silver are broadly acceptable to buyers and may be easier to resell, which helps explain why they continue to dominate.
So the strongest conclusion is not that colorful cars replaced neutral cars. Instead, automakers became more deliberate about where expressive color would have the greatest marketing and emotional effect.

How to protect and repair distinctive factory colors
If a new shade gets chipped, look for a vehicle-specific touch-up paint pen and match the paint code—not just the color name.
Color names such as Terra, Copper Crest, or Madeira Gold Metallic identify the finish for marketing purposes, but the paint code is the more useful identifier for repair products. Ford’s support guidance directs owners to the vehicle’s paint code, which is typically found on the door-jamb label. [c006] Toyota also offers genuine color-matched touch-up products for specific finishes, while Dupli-Color documents exact-match automotive touch-up products for current and late-model vehicles. [c007] [c008]
Before buying, record:
- The vehicle identification number if a retailer requests it;
- The exact paint code from the door-jamb or manufacturer label;
- The model year and trim;
- Whether the finish is metallic, pearl, mica, tri-coat, or another multi-layer system; and
- Whether the product is intended for a chip, scratch, or larger repair.
Do not assume a universal paint pen will perfectly match every metallic, pearl, tri-coat, or aged finish. Even a code-based product may need careful surface preparation and application, and a larger or conspicuous repair may be better handled by a professional body shop. For a small stone chip, however, a correctly identified touch-up product can help prevent exposed metal or primer from remaining vulnerable.
Want a new color without repainting?
Some owners may like the look of a distinctive 2024 factory color but already own a vehicle that was not offered in it. A professionally installed automotive color-change wrap can provide a reversible alternative to a permanent repaint.
Automotive wrap films can be used for accents, partial coverage, or a complete color change. 3M documents applications ranging from small design elements to full-vehicle wraps and offers films in many colors and finishes. [c009] [c010] [c011]
A wrap is not factory paint. It changes the visible exterior surface but does not alter the original paint underneath. That distinction affects appearance, durability, maintenance, removal, and resale expectations. Film condition also depends on the vehicle’s existing paint, panel condition, climate, washing habits, and installation quality.
For a full color change, professional installation is usually the sensible choice. Installers must manage seams, edges, handles, mirrors, body contours, and removal without damaging suitable underlying paint. A partial wrap can be a lower-cost way to experiment with a contrasting roof, hood, mirror caps, or accent panels.

2024 did not mark a wholesale return to bright-colored cars. It gave buyers more expressive choices where automakers could target luxury, enthusiast, and outdoor lifestyles—while the broader new-car market continued to favor neutral finishes.
Best Value
- The color deck includes sample swatches that display the full spectrum of colors and textures from all of VViViD's existing product lines.
- Experience every color and texture of each film in person, providing a more accurate representation compared to viewing them on the screens of cell phones or computers, where color accuracy can be compromised.
- Manipulate the samples to observe how changes in lighting affect the colors and highlights, allowing for a more comprehensive understanding of their appearance.
Paint-care note: Match touch-up products by the vehicle’s paint code, not by a similar-looking color name. Complex metallic, mica, pearl, and layered finishes may require professional repair for a truly consistent result.
Wrap note: Vinyl film can change a vehicle’s visible color or add accents without repainting, but it is a separate surface treatment and should be evaluated as such.
Frequently Asked Questions
Did colorful cars replace neutral colors in 2024?
No. Industry reports still showed white, gray, black, and silver dominating the new-car market in 2024. The change was more noticeable at the model and trim level, especially on luxury, enthusiast, off-road, and special-edition vehicles.
How can I tell whether a 2024 car color is actually available on the vehicle I want?
Not necessarily. Confirm the exact model, trim, model year, market, finish type, and any two-tone or package requirements. A color may be exclusive to one grade or edition.
How do I buy the correct touch-up paint for a new car color?
Use the vehicle’s paint code, usually found on a door-jamb label or manufacturer identification label. A color name alone may not identify the correct formula, particularly for metallic, mica, pearl, tri-coat, or other effect finishes.
Can I change my car to one of these colors without repainting it?
A vinyl wrap can change the visible color or add accents without repainting. It is not the same as factory paint, and a full wrap generally benefits from professional installation.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The most interesting 2024 car colors appeared in carefully chosen places—not across the entire market. Porsche, Lexus, and Toyota used blue, copper, gold, earthy green, and two-tone combinations to give selected vehicles more personality, while white, gray, black, and silver remained the industry’s dominant colors.
