Among conventional gasoline-only sedans, Edmunds’ July 16, 2026 ranking names the 2026 Honda Civic as the most fuel-efficient, with EPA estimates of 36 mpg combined (32 city/41 highway). If “gas-powered” includes hybrids, the answer changes: Edmunds lists the 2026 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid Blue at 54 mpg combined.

Which gasoline-only sedan gets the best gas mileage?

For a sedan without a hybrid system, Edmunds’ 2026 ranking identifies the 2026 Honda Civic, reporting EPA estimates of 36 mpg combined, 32 mpg city and 41 mpg highway. The ranking was published July 16, 2026, and is a secondary-source result rather than an independent ranking of EPA’s underlying vehicle data. Edmunds’ 2026 ranking

Those figures describe EPA estimates, not a promise of what every driver will achieve. Actual fuel economy can differ with driving conditions and vehicle configuration.

Does “gas-powered” include hybrids?

That wording can mean either a conventional gasoline engine or any vehicle that uses gasoline, including a gasoline-electric hybrid. The distinction matters: if hybrids count, Edmunds names the 2026 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid Blue as its sedan leader at 54 mpg combined (51 city/58 highway). Edmunds’ hybrid comparison

For a like-for-like comparison, keep conventional gasoline sedans separate from hybrids and plug-in hybrids. Plug-in hybrid fuel economy may also be reported in MPGe, which is not the same measure as gasoline MPG. A ranking that mixes those drivetrain types does not answer which non-hybrid sedan gets the best gas mileage. Car and Driver’s mixed-drivetrain list

How to verify the Civic’s exact EPA rating

Fuel-economy ratings can vary by engine and transmission, so confirm the specific model-year configuration rather than relying only on a model name. EPA’s consumer lookup lets shoppers search by model year, make, model, engine and transmission. EPA fuel-economy lookup and label guidance

  1. Open EPA’s vehicle lookup and select the 2026 model year.
  2. Choose Honda and Civic, then narrow the result to the engine and transmission you are considering.
  3. Check the combined, city and highway MPG values for that exact configuration against the vehicle’s fuel-economy label.

EPA lists a 2026 test-car data file dated January 2026, and says manufacturers must update label MPG estimates if information shows that the values are too high. EPA 2026 test-car data

EPA label MPG and other fuel-economy figures are not interchangeable

The Civic figures above are reported as EPA estimates from Edmunds’ ranking. EPA cautions that the real-world estimates in its Automotive Trends Report differ from the consumer fuel-economy label values shown when vehicles are sold. Use one measure consistently when comparing cars; do not treat figures from the trends report as if they were the window-label rating. EPA Automotive Trends Report guidance
