The cheapest muscle car depends on what you mean by “cheap”: the lowest new-car starting price, a used-car estimate, or an older classic. For a new 2026 model, the Ford Mustang is the lowest-priced candidate in the cited rankings, with starting-price figures of $34,990 from Car and Driver and $32,320 from CARFAX. Used estimates point to several possibilities, but they are not directly comparable enough to name one definitive winner. Treat the figures below as starting points, then check local listings and the exact car’s condition, trim, title history, and ownership costs.

What counts as a muscle car—and what “cheapest” means

There is no single agreed definition of a muscle car. iSeeCars says it uses American coupes and sedans with powerful V8 engines and strengthened internals for its traditional category. Other buying guides also group pony cars and performance sedans into the broader muscle-car conversation. This guide separates newer performance cars from classic, used-only options rather than treating every price as an apples-to-apples comparison.

Price evidence also uses different measures. A starting MSRP is not a dealer’s out-the-door price; a publisher-reported used-car figure is not a guaranteed current asking price or sale price. The figures here come from sources that may use different methods and dates, so use them to build a shortlist, not to declare a national market winner.

Cheapest new muscle-car candidates

For a new-car comparison, the cited 2026 rankings put the Mustang below the Charger. CARFAX and Car and Driver report different Mustang figures, so the source and price basis matter.

2026 Ford Mustang $34,990 Car and Driver’s listed starting price for the 2026 model year. Car and Driver
2026 Dodge Charger $51,990 Car and Driver’s listed starting price for the all-new 2026 model. It uses a twin-turbo inline-six, so it is not a like-for-like V8 comparison with the previous-generation Charger. Car and Driver

2026 Ford Mustang

The Mustang is the lower-entry-price new option in these rankings. CARFAX characterizes its base engine as brisk and the optional V8 as the choice for buyers seeking more speed. The base price therefore does not describe a V8-equipped car; higher trims and options raise the cost. Its rear seat is tight, a practical trade-off if you regularly carry passengers. CARFAX also notes that prices vary by location and market conditions. CARFAX

2026 Dodge Charger

Car and Driver lists the 2026 Charger at a higher starting price than the Mustang, and this generation’s twin-turbo inline-six makes it a different proposition from the V8 Chargers discussed below. Compare the model year and engine before treating Charger prices as one continuous series. Car and Driver

Used muscle cars to put on your shortlist

Among older, modern-era choices, the cited prices vary by source and model year. They are useful screening figures, not substitutes for checking current local listings.

2023 Dodge Challenger $30,940 CARFAX-reported price in its March 12, 2026 ranking; the figure is for a 2023 car, not a new model. CARFAX
2024 Dodge Charger V8 $42,480 CARFAX-reported price for the V8 model; its cited V8 output range runs from 370 to 797 hp across versions. CARFAX
Chevrolet Camaro, three years old $35,329 average used price iSeeCars’ ranking-table estimate; its detailed model information reports different price values, so treat this as approximate rather than a clean market average. iSeeCars
Dodge Challenger, three years old $43,799 average used price iSeeCars’ ranking-table estimate; its detailed model information reports different price values, so treat this as approximate rather than a clean market average. iSeeCars

2023 Dodge Challenger

CARFAX’s $30,940 figure makes this a notable used-car candidate, but it refers specifically to a 2023 Challenger. CARFAX describes the car as roomy and comfortable, with large-V8 options, while pointing to its weight, less agile handling, and modest cabin and safety equipment as compromises. It reports 16.2 cubic feet of cargo capacity. Check the engine and trim on any listing: a lower-priced version is not equivalent to a high-output V8. CARFAX

Chevrolet Camaro

The Camaro is often called a pony car, though it appears in muscle-car buying guides. iSeeCars includes the LT1, SS, and ZL1 under its performance-based criteria and lists 455 hp for the LT1 and SS and 650 hp for the ZL1. Those trims are not interchangeable, and the source’s three-year-old average used-price estimate conflicts with its detailed model prices. Use it as a rough indicator, then compare listings for the exact trim and condition. iSeeCars

V8 Dodge Charger

The $42,480 CARFAX figure applies to a 2024 V8 Charger, not the new 2026 Charger. CARFAX’s cited V8 output span of 370–797 hp covers different versions, so it does not identify the performance or value of a specific listing. Confirm generation, engine, and trim before comparing it with the newer inline-six model. CARFAX

Pontiac GTO

The discontinued GTO is a used-only V8 option, but the available source does not provide a current price. CARFAX says the 2004 model began with a 350-hp 5.7-liter V8; 2005–2006 cars received a 400-hp 6.0-liter V8. Check current local listings and condition before deciding whether one fits your budget. Affordable classic muscle cars: promising names, prices to verify

Car and Driver highlights several less obvious classics as affordable candidates, but it does not give current sale prices for them. That means these are leads for further shopping, not verified bargains. Older cars can differ substantially in rust, originality, restoration quality, and mechanical condition, all of which affect what a particular example is worth.

How to compare cars without mistaking low price for good value

Start with the same model year and engine class, then compare the whole vehicle rather than its headline price. A low starting figure can describe a lower-power engine or trim, while V8 performance versions may cost substantially more. Car and Driver says its rankings consider roughly 200 data points, including acceleration, handling, comfort, cargo, fuel efficiency, value, and enjoyment; that broader mix is a useful reminder that purchase price is only one part of the decision. Car and Driver

  • Price and model year: compare asking prices for the same year and generation, and distinguish MSRP or publisher-reported figures from actual local listings.
  • Engine and trim: verify the engine code or factory configuration. A base Mustang, a V8 Challenger, and a high-output Camaro trim are different performance and cost propositions.
  • Condition and history: review title and history records, inspect for damage or rust, and arrange an independent mechanical inspection. A low asking price alone does not establish condition.
  • Practicality: consider passenger space and cargo needs. CARFAX’s Challenger notes include a roomy cabin and 16.2 cubic feet of cargo space, while its Mustang notes flag a tight rear seat. CARFAX
  • Running costs and intended use: compare fuel economy, tires, maintenance needs, and how you plan to drive the car. The cited sources do not establish a reliable ranking for insurance costs or repair frequency, so get quotes and vehicle-specific assessments rather than inferring them from model reputation.

Before committing, compare multiple local examples and calculate the total cost to buy and put the car into the condition you want. For classics in particular, have originality, rust, and restoration work assessed rather than relying on a model name or an old article’s “affordable” label.
