The 2025 Mustang GTD is the most powerful production Mustang Ford has identified, with 815 SAE-certified horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque. Ford’s published historical highlights do not support a definitive ranking of ten Mustangs on a consistent measurement basis, so this is a sourced comparison of the notable high-output models for which figures are available—not a numbered top ten.
Which Ford Mustang has the most horsepower?
Ford says the 2025 Mustang GTD is the most powerful production Mustang in history. Its supercharged 5.2-liter V8 is rated at 815 SAE-certified hp and 664 lb-ft of torque. Ford’s September 16, 2024 announcement also gives the car a 202 mph top speed. Those are the GTD’s published specifications, not an independent test result. Ford’s GTD announcement describes a track-focused package that includes active aerodynamics, carbon-ceramic brakes, an inboard rear suspension with semi-active dampers and a dry-sump oil system.

Horsepower figures from different eras need qualification. Ford’s GTD number is explicitly SAE-certified; the cited historical overview gives older factory output figures but does not establish that they were measured using the same standard. They should not be treated as directly equivalent measurements.
Notable high-output Mustangs with published Ford figures
The entries below are ordered from newer to older, not ranked by a single directly comparable test. “hp” figures are reproduced as Ford publishes them; the Brazil-market Dark Horse figure is in cv, a different unit, and is kept separate.

How the modern GTD and Shelby GT500 differ
2025 Mustang GTD
The GTD leads this comparison in Ford’s published peak-power figures: 815 SAE-certified hp from a supercharged 5.2-liter V8, with 664 lb-ft. Its chassis and aerodynamic equipment point to a track-oriented car, while Ford’s announcement specifies a 202 mph top speed. Ford’s description of the GTD as the most powerful production Mustang is its stated production-car claim; it is not a claim about modified Mustangs or every competition-only vehicle.

2020 Shelby GT500
The Shelby GT500’s supercharged 5.2-liter V8 is rated at 760 hp and 625 lb-ft in Ford Performance’s technical material. Ford described it in 2019 as the most powerful street-legal Ford at that time. That was a contemporary claim, not the current Mustang production-power record: Ford now identifies the GTD as the production Mustang leader.
Why the Boss 429 is more than a horsepower figure
Ford lists the 1969 Boss 429 at 375 U.S. hp, but its significance also lies in its purpose. Ford says the model was offered in 1969 and 1970 to homologate the semi-hemispherical 429 engine for NASCAR. Ford Brazil reports that 1,359 Boss 429s were produced across those model years. That production count and homologation role help explain why the car remains a standout even though its published horsepower figure is below the modern GTD and Shelby figures. Why this is not a definitive top ten
A defensible all-time ranking requires verified factory output for each candidate and a consistent comparison method: model year, production-road legality, manufacturer-rated engine output, units, and the rating standard. Ford’s accessible historical sources highlight selected cars rather than providing a complete year-by-year Mustang specification table. They also do not establish whether the older ratings use the same basis as the GTD’s SAE-certified figure.
As a result, adding three more models to make a ten-car ranking would imply verified, comparable specifications that these sources do not establish. The figures here are a documented set of high-output examples, not a claim that unlisted Mustangs made less power or a complete ordering of every special edition.
