Tesla says production began in the second quarter of 2026, and Associated Press reporting says passenger rides began in Austin, Texas, on September 3. The launch is small, the wider Robotaxi network uses a mixed fleet, and federal regulators are reviewing Tesla’s self-certification. That makes Cybercab an early, limited deployment—not a nationwide driverless-car rollout.
What has happened so far
Tesla’s Q2 2026 quarterly update says production of its purpose-built Robotaxi vehicle started during the quarter. Tesla also reported engineering test drives of production vehicles on public roads and employee rides at Gigafactory Texas beginning in July.

On September 3, AP reported that Tesla began offering passenger rides in Cybercabs in Austin and held a launch event for invitees. Those are company-reported production milestones and a reported first public-service market; they do not establish a schedule for broader Cybercab availability.

- Austin, Dallas and Houston, Texas
- Miami, Orlando and Tampa, Florida
This is a list of Robotaxi service markets, not proof that Cybercab vehicles operate in every one. Tesla’s service uses both Model Y and Cybercab vehicles, and the assigned vehicle depends on availability and group size.
Tesla’s Q2 update gives broader Robotaxi status labels: San Francisco Bay Area was listed as “Safety Driver”; Austin, Dallas and Houston as “Ramping Unsupervised”; Phoenix and Las Vegas as “Preparations Underway”; and Miami, Orlando and Tampa as “Ramping Unsupervised.” These labels describe Tesla’s Robotaxi operation generally, not a city-by-city Cybercab deployment map. Tesla’s footnote says active driver supervision is required for supervised operation and that supervision does not make a vehicle autonomous.
What a ride is like
- Open Tesla’s Robotaxi app and enter a destination within the displayed service area.
- Review the quoted fare and estimated wait time.
- Confirm the trip.
- Meet the vehicle assigned by Tesla. Riders cannot choose Cybercab instead of Model Y.
AP describes the Austin Cybercab as a two-seat vehicle without a steering wheel, exterior mirrors or the brake pedals normally found in a conventional car. Those details describe the vehicles reported at the Austin launch; they should not be treated as a complete specification for every future production unit.

Why federal compliance is still an open question
On September 4, NHTSA opened an Audit Query into Tesla’s self-certification after the Austin deployment. The agency is examining the technical data and process Tesla used to certify the vehicle, including whether its compliance framework treated some Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards as inapplicable to an automated vehicle without traditional human controls.
U.S. automakers generally self-certify compliance with federal performance requirements, with NHTSA retaining oversight. NHTSA says existing standards remain in force until any rule changes are completed. The agency is working on updates involving brake pedals, wipers, lighting and rearview mirrors, but the Audit Query is not a final finding, recall or ban.

“NHTSA fully supports the safe development and deployment of automated vehicles. But as the federal regulator, we need to ensure that all of our laws are followed,” NHTSA Administrator Jonathan Morrison said in the agency’s September 4 press release.

What has not been established
- A confirmed date for Cybercab passenger service in Dallas, Houston or the three listed Florida markets.
- A definitive schedule for additional cities or nationwide availability.
- The final outcome of NHTSA’s Audit Query.
- A verified performance comparison with rival robotaxi systems.
- A reliable cumulative-mile figure from Tesla’s chart; the published update does not provide a clean number suitable for quotation.
What the rollout means for riders
For an Austin rider, Cybercab represents a real but limited service: passenger trips have begun, yet availability depends on Tesla’s service boundaries and dispatch. A booking may produce a Model Y rather than a Cybercab, and the app does not let the passenger select the vehicle. Outside the listed zones, there is no established public Cybercab booking option in the cited material.
The practical significance is therefore narrower than Tesla’s long-term robotaxi ambition. Production and a first public market are now documented, while fleet scale, city expansion and federal certification questions remain unresolved.
