The Best Toyota Highlander Years to Buy—and the Ones to Approach Carefully

The best used Toyota Highlander years are generally 2016, 2019, 2021, and 2022, while 2003, 2004–2006, 2015, and 2017–2018 deserve extra scrutiny. Here is why—and how to check any Highlander by VIN, powertrain, and condition.

The best used Toyota Highlander years are usually 2016, 2019, 2021, and 2022. The 2016 and 2019 models are attractive late third-generation gas-powered choices, while 2021 and 2022 offer the newer fourth-generation design without the later gas-powertrain switch to a turbocharged four-cylinder. A well-maintained 2014 can also be a good value, but it deserves a more thorough inspection because it was the first year of a major redesign.

The years that call for the most caution are 2003, unrepaired 2004–2006 vehicles, 2015, and 2017–2018. That does not mean every Highlander from those years is bad. It means the vehicle’s VIN, service records, transmission behavior, recall history, and inspection should matter more than the badge or asking price. This guide is focused primarily on U.S.-market model years and reflects information available through March 2026.

The quick verdict

Shopping priority Best Highlander years to target Why Important qualification
Best balanced used gas model 2016 A mature third-generation Highlander with the established V6-based layout and fewer first-year redesign concerns than 2014. Still inspect any transmission, suspension, and high-mileage wear items.
Late third-generation choice 2019 One of the final years of the third generation, with a well-developed cabin and V6 gas engine. It uses the available eight-speed automatic, so check carefully for whine, grinding, hesitation, harsh shifts, or warning lights.
Best newer gas choices 2021 and 2022 Fourth-generation design, modern safety and multimedia equipment, and the pre-turbo gas V6. Confirm all VIN-specific recalls, including the second-row seat-recliner recall affecting certain 2021–2024 vehicles announced in March 2026.
Best value candidate 2014 Often less expensive while retaining the third-generation platform. It is the redesign year; buy only with strong records and a clean independent inspection.
Best hybrid strategy Later, well-documented examples Hybrid condition and maintenance history matter more than choosing an arbitrary year. Have the hybrid battery, cooling system, and hybrid control systems evaluated.
Highest-caution shopping 2003, 2004–2006, 2015, and 2017–2018 Complaint concentrations, recall campaigns, transmission documentation, or reported transmission symptoms make due diligence especially important. These are not automatic rejects, but they need stronger evidence and a risk-adjusted price.

Why the model year is only the starting point

A Highlander with 180,000 miles, incomplete maintenance records, accident damage, or untreated corrosion can be a worse purchase than a carefully maintained example from a less desirable year. Year-based rankings are useful for narrowing the search, not for replacing a vehicle-specific inspection.

The evidence also has limitations. Consumer Reports reliability predictions are based on owner-survey data and are useful for comparing models and years, but they cannot determine the condition of one particular SUV. J.D. Power ratings are also survey-based ownership measures. CarComplaints can help identify recurring complaint themes, but it is not a denominator-based failure-rate study: complaint totals are influenced by sales volume, vehicle age, mileage, repair costs, and how likely owners are to report problems.

That is why “avoid” in this article means approach only with unusually good documentation, inspection results, and pricing—not that every vehicle from that year will fail.

Toyota Highlander generations at a glance

Generation Model years What shoppers should know
First generation 2001–2007 Toyota introduced the Highlander for 2001 on a modified Camry-based unibody platform. The Highlander Hybrid arrived for 2006.
Second generation 2008–2013 A larger redesign with several recall populations and a later NHTSA investigation involving alleged upper steering-column separation.
Third generation 2014–2019 2014 was the redesign year. The available eight-speed automatic arrived during the 2017–2019 period, making transmission behavior a key buying consideration.
Fourth generation 2020–2026 Redesigned for 2020. Gas models used the V6 through 2022 before Toyota moved to a turbocharged four-cylinder for 2023 and later gas versions.
Fifth generation 2027 Toyota describes the 2027 Highlander as an all-new battery-electric model, expected to begin sales in late 2026 and continue into early 2027. It should be evaluated separately from used gas and hybrid Highlanders.

The best Toyota Highlander years to buy

2016: the best all-around used gas choice for many shoppers

The 2016 Highlander is a strong compromise between age, equipment, price, and mechanical familiarity. It is a late-cycle example of the third generation, so it avoids the first-year redesign risk of 2014 while retaining the generation’s established V6-based architecture.

It also avoids the earliest years of the available eight-speed automatic that make some 2017–2018 vehicles more complicated buying propositions. That does not make every 2016 trouble-free. Age-related suspension wear, fluid leaks, neglected cooling-system maintenance, air-conditioning faults, power-liftgate problems, and corrosion can still make an apparently inexpensive SUV costly.

Best for: buyers who want a conventional used gas Highlander and are willing to accept older safety, infotainment, and driver-assistance technology than the fourth-generation models.

2019: the best late third-generation option, with a transmission caveat

The 2019 Highlander is one of the final third-generation models and benefits from a mature design. It is a reasonable target for shoppers who want a late-model V6 Highlander but do not want to pay fourth-generation prices.

The qualification is important: the 2019 belongs to the period in which the available eight-speed automatic transmission is part of the buying equation. On the test drive, check for transmission whine, grinding, harsh engagement, hesitation, unusual shift timing, warning lights, or a drivetrain that behaves differently once fully warm. A quiet, smooth test drive and complete service documentation are much more valuable than simply seeing “2019” on the registration.

Best for: buyers who prioritize a late third-generation body and V6 power but can afford a professional inspection focused on the transmission.

2021 and 2022: the best newer gas-powered choices

The Highlander was fully redesigned for 2020. The 2021 and 2022 models are appealing because they provide the fourth-generation cabin, updated technology, and newer crash-avoidance systems without moving to the turbocharged gas engine introduced for 2023. Gas versions use the familiar V6, while the hybrid versions follow the newer-generation hybrid layout.

Contemporary vehicle information identifies Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ on the 2021 model. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s ratings for the 2020–2026 design show strong structural and crash-test performance in the tested categories. Safety equipment and crash performance are not the same as reliability, but they are meaningful advantages over older Highlanders when the purchase budget allows.

There is one current recall issue that should be treated as a purchase prerequisite. In March 2026, a second-row seat-recliner recall was announced for certain 2021–2024 Highlanders and Highlander Hybrids. The campaign is VIN-specific, so do not assume a vehicle is affected—or repaired—based only on its model year. Use the Toyota Highlander VIN recall lookup and verify the result against the seller’s repair documentation and NHTSA’s recall database.

Best for: shoppers who want a newer Highlander, the V6 gas powertrain, and more modern safety and interior technology than the third-generation models.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2014: a possible value buy, but not the automatic winner

The 2014 Highlander can make sense when its purchase price is substantially lower than a comparable 2016 and the vehicle has complete records. It introduced the third generation, which brought a newer design and more modern packaging than the 2008–2013 models.

However, first-year redesign status is the reason to inspect rather than celebrate the year automatically. Look for evidence of consistent maintenance, a clean cold start, smooth transmission operation, correct fluid levels, and an absence of warning lights. A 2014 with excellent records can be a better purchase than a neglected 2016, but a 2014 with vague history should not command the same confidence.

Best for: value-focused buyers who can pay for an independent inspection and who are not selecting the cheapest example solely because it is inexpensive.

How to choose a Highlander Hybrid

The Highlander Hybrid has been available since the 2006 model year. The sensible hybrid strategy is not to identify one supposedly perfect year and ignore the condition of the battery system. A later, well-documented hybrid is generally the safer direction than an arbitrary year with an unknown battery, neglected cooling system, or incomplete recall history.

The 2020 redesign changed the hybrid arrangement to a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with electric motors. That means a 2020-and-newer hybrid should be evaluated as a newer-generation vehicle rather than assumed to be mechanically identical to the earlier V6 hybrids.

Before buying any hybrid, request a hybrid-system diagnostic check. Ask what evidence exists for hybrid-battery inspection or replacement, cooling-system service, and regular maintenance. A generic engine scan may not access every hybrid, battery, inverter, ABS, SRS, or transmission-related module. If the seller will not permit a qualified hybrid inspection, treat that refusal as a meaningful risk signal.

Highlander years that deserve extra caution

2003: the clearest early-generation caution year

CarComplaints identifies 2003 as its worst Highlander model year after considering complaint patterns, mileage, and potential repair severity, even though 2015 has more total complaints in its overview. That distinction matters: the database does not prove a specific failure rate, and an old vehicle’s complaint profile is heavily affected by age and reporting behavior. Still, the concentration is enough to justify a higher inspection threshold.

A 2003 Highlander should have unusually strong maintenance records, a clean title and history, a careful underbody inspection, and a price that reflects its age and repair risk. If the seller cannot explain its maintenance history, there are usually better candidates to pursue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2004–2006: verify recall work before considering the vehicle

Certain 2004–2006 Highlanders were covered by NHTSA recall documentation involving a brake-master-cylinder seal condition. If the vehicle had been serviced with unsuitable brake fluid, the condition could allow brake-fluid leakage and eventually degrade braking performance. A separate Toyota/NHTSA campaign covered certain vehicles in the same range for a related fuel-pipe issue.

These campaigns do not mean every 2004–2006 Highlander is unsafe or defective. They do mean that a buyer should check the specific VIN and obtain evidence that applicable repairs were completed. Do not rely on a seller’s statement that “all recalls were done” without a VIN-based record.

2008–2013: test the steering system and search every recall campaign

NHTSA opened an investigation into allegations involving upper steering-column separation on 2008–2013 Highlander and Highlander Hybrid vehicles. The investigation was closed in April 2024 without a recall being sought. That closure is not evidence that every vehicle in the range has a steering-column defect, but the investigation is a reason to test the steering system carefully.

With the vehicle stationary, test the steering-wheel tilt and telescoping functions. Look for looseness, abnormal movement, or play beyond what the adjustment mechanism should allow. During the road test, pay attention to steering feel, clunks, changes in wheel position, and any sign that the column or wheel is not secure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Certain 2008–2011 vehicles were also included in a power-window-master-switch recall population, and certain 2008–2010 vehicles were included in a spiral-cable campaign. Check both the VIN and repair history rather than rejecting every second-generation Highlander.

2015: the complaint-count warning and transmission paperwork

The 2015 model has the highest total complaint count in the CarComplaints overview, although CarComplaints rates 2003 as worse after accounting for other factors. Total complaints alone are not a failure-rate comparison, but the result is still a reason to inspect 2015 vehicles carefully.

Toyota technical-service documentation also covers automatic-transmission or transaxle replacement procedures and shifting-related issues for this model. A technical service bulletin is not a recall and does not establish that a problem is widespread. It does make service records, diagnostic scanning, and a cold-and-warm transmission test especially important.

2017–2018: do not automatically reject them, but scrutinize the eight-speed automatic

The available eight-speed automatic transmission was introduced during this part of the third-generation Highlander’s run. Owner-report aggregations and search results associate some 2017–2018 vehicles with transmission whine, grinding, warning lights, replacement concerns, or other shifting complaints.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The accurate buying advice is extra transmission scrutiny, not “never buy.” On a cold start, listen for abnormal drivetrain noise and confirm that the vehicle engages drive and reverse cleanly. During a longer drive, test gentle acceleration, harder acceleration, low-speed shifts, highway cruising, and deceleration. Repeat the drive after the powertrain reaches operating temperature. Any whine, grinding, harsh engagement, hesitation, warning light, or unexplained shift behavior should trigger a professional diagnosis before purchase.

2020: a good redesign with more first-year uncertainty

The 2020 Highlander has strong crash-test results for the fourth-generation structure, and the model received generally positive assessments for ride and powertrain in contemporary Consumer Reports coverage. Nevertheless, 2020 is the first year of the redesign. That naturally means less long-term field history was available at launch than for 2021 and 2022.

A 2020 can be a sensible purchase if its condition and price are right. Buyers who want to reduce first-year redesign uncertainty should compare it closely with a similarly equipped 2021 or 2022 rather than assuming the newer model is automatically worth the premium.

2023 and newer: a powertrain and technology decision, not a blanket “avoid”

The 2023 Highlander introduced Toyota’s newer multimedia system and changed gas versions from the prior V6 to a turbocharged four-cylinder. That does not make 2023 automatically unreliable or undesirable. It does make 2021 and 2022 more attractive to shoppers whose priority is the established V6 gas powertrain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 2026 gas Highlander uses a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, while the 2026 Highlander Hybrid uses a 2.5-liter hybrid powertrain. The all-new battery-electric 2027 Highlander is a fundamentally different vehicle; its launch should not be used as evidence about the used reliability of earlier gas or hybrid Highlanders.

A step-by-step used Highlander buying process

  1. Choose the powertrain before choosing the year. If you want a V6 gas Highlander, concentrate first on 2016, 2019, 2021, and 2022, with the transmission caveat on 2019. If you want a hybrid, prioritize documented battery and cooling-system condition over a simple year ranking. If you are considering 2023 or newer, decide whether the turbocharged four-cylinder and newer multimedia system meet your needs.
  2. Run the VIN through recall databases. Use the Toyota Highlander VIN recall lookup and NHTSA’s recall database. Recall applicability is VIN-specific. Record open campaigns and verify completed repairs with invoices or a manufacturer/dealer record.
  3. Order a history report, but do not confuse it with an inspection. A Highlander vehicle history report can help compare the seller’s claims with title status, reported accidents, mileage entries, ownership history, and service events. It may miss unreported damage or maintenance, so use it as one evidence source rather than a mechanical verdict.
  4. Compare the records with the odometer and the vehicle. Look for consistent mileage progression, oil and fluid service, cooling-system work, brake service, tire replacement, and evidence of work on the transmission or hybrid system where relevant. Uneven tire wear, fresh underbody cleaning, mismatched panels, and a steering wheel or pedal set that appears much more worn than the odometer deserves further questioning.
  5. Drive it both cold and warm. On 2015–2019 models, focus on transmission noise and shift quality. On 2008–2013 models, test steering adjustment and watch for looseness or abnormal movement. On every year, check cold-start behavior, braking, acceleration, tracking, suspension noise, air-conditioning operation, power liftgate function, warning lights, and infotainment.
  6. Use a scanner as supplemental evidence. An OBD2 scanner for checking a used car can reveal stored or pending engine and emissions codes and may show clues that are not visible on the dashboard. A generic scanner cannot detect every mechanical problem and may not access all Toyota hybrid, ABS, SRS, or transmission modules. Do not erase codes before an inspection or treat a clean basic scan as proof that the vehicle is sound.
  7. Pay for an independent inspection before negotiating the final price. Arrange a pre-purchase inspection for a used Highlander with a mechanic who can inspect the specific generation and powertrain. This is especially important for 2003, 2004–2006, 2015, 2017–2018, high-mileage vehicles, hybrids, and any Highlander with unclear records.
  8. Price the risk instead of arguing about the reputation. If an inspection finds worn brakes or tires, those are negotiable maintenance costs. A transmission noise, unresolved recall, structural corrosion, hybrid-system fault, title problem, or unexplained steering issue is a reason to walk away or require a much stronger financial justification.

What to inspect on each high-risk group

Highlander group Inspection priority
2003 Complete maintenance history, underbody corrosion, fluid leaks, cooling system, suspension, braking, and evidence of neglected age-related repairs.
2004–2006 VIN-based confirmation of brake and fuel-pipe campaigns, brake-fluid condition, braking performance, fuel-system inspection, and general age-related deterioration.
2008–2013 Steering-wheel tilt and telescope operation, abnormal steering-column movement, power-window function, spiral-cable campaign status, and recall completion.
2015 Cold and warm transmission behavior, diagnostic scan, service invoices, fluid leaks, and any record of transmission or transaxle work.
2017–2018 Eight-speed transmission noise, grinding, harsh engagement, hesitation, warning lights, and smooth operation at both low and highway speeds.
2020 First-year redesign electronics, infotainment, driver-assistance functions, powertrain behavior, open recalls, and evidence of software or repair updates.
2021–2024 VIN-specific recall check, including the second-row seat-recliner campaign announced in March 2026 for certain vehicles.
Any hybrid Hybrid-system diagnostic check, battery condition, cooling-system maintenance, warning lights, and documented service by a qualified technician.

Simple ownership tasks after you buy

Once the Highlander passes inspection, begin with the maintenance items that match its exact configuration. Keep the owner’s manual and service schedule for the correct model year, engine, drivetrain, and hybrid or gas version. A year-specific Highlander manual can help a DIY owner verify warning-light meanings, maintenance intervals, fluid specifications, and basic procedures without assuming that every Highlander uses the same parts or schedule.

For a low-cost maintenance task, owners may eventually need a Toyota Highlander cabin air filter. Confirm the exact model year, trim, drivetrain, and fitment before ordering; listings that look similar are not automatically interchangeable, and the correct part does not substitute for overdue engine, transmission, brake, or hybrid-system service.

The practical ranking

  1. Prioritize 2016, 2019, 2021, and 2022 when mileage, condition, equipment, and price are reasonably comparable.
  2. Consider 2014 only after a stronger inspection, because it is the first year of the third-generation redesign.
  3. Consider 2015 only with transmission-focused due diligence and records that explain its maintenance and any shifting or transaxle work.
  4. Treat 2017–2018 as condition-dependent: a smooth, quiet transmission and complete documentation are essential.
  5. Approach 2003 and unrepaired 2004–2006 vehicles with the highest caution. A low price alone is not compensation for an unknown safety or mechanical history.
  6. For 2008–2013, test the steering-column adjustment and verify every relevant recall campaign.
  7. For any 2021–2024 Highlander or Highlander Hybrid, verify the March 2026 second-row seat-recliner recall status by VIN before purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the single best Toyota Highlander year to buy used?

For many buyers, 2016 is the best balanced used gas choice because it is a mature third-generation model that avoids the first-year redesign risk of 2014 and the earliest eight-speed-transmission years. A well-maintained 2019, 2021, or 2022 may be better if you want a newer vehicle or different equipment.

Should I completely avoid a 2015 Toyota Highlander?

No. The 2015 model has the highest total complaint count in the cited CarComplaints overview and has Toyota technical-service documentation involving transmission and transaxle procedures, but that does not prove every 2015 is defective. Buy only after a cold-and-warm transmission test, diagnostic scan, record review, and independent inspection.

Are 2017 and 2018 Highlanders bad years?

They are not automatic rejects. Because these years introduced the available eight-speed automatic, some vehicles are associated with transmission whine, grinding, hesitation, warning lights, or replacement concerns. A quiet, smooth transmission and documented maintenance are essential.

Is the 2020 Highlander a good used buy?

It can be. The 2020 model benefits from the fourth-generation redesign and strong tested crash performance, but it is the first year of that redesign. If a 2021 or 2022 is similarly priced and equipped, those later years may offer a more appealing balance of newer design and additional field history.

Which Toyota Highlander Hybrid year is most reliable?

There is no responsible one-year answer based on the available evidence. Choose a later, well-documented hybrid after checking battery condition, hybrid-system diagnostics, cooling-system maintenance, mileage, and recall completion. Remember that the 2020 redesign changed the hybrid system to a 2.5-liter four-cylinder and electric-motor arrangement.

The Bottom Line

For most used-gas shoppers, start with 2016, 2019, 2021, and 2022. Choose 2016 for a mature and comparatively straightforward third-generation vehicle, 2019 for a late V6 model after a careful eight-speed transmission test, and 2021–2022 for a newer fourth-generation Highlander that retains the gas V6. Treat 2014 as an inspection-dependent value option, not an automatic best year. Approach 2003, unrepaired 2004–2006, 2015, and 2017–2018 with extra caution, and never complete a purchase without a VIN recall check and an independent inspection.
