Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteAt night, an anti-Elon Musk message can appear to come straight from the rear of a Tesla Cybertruck. That is the visual trick behind videos posted by the TikTok account generally identified as Cybertruck Hunters: a projector, a laptop and a second vehicle are used to cast political and anti-Tesla messages onto a Cybertruck’s tailgate.
The videos began circulating in mid-February 2025 and drew wider attention after Rachel Maddow discussed them on MSNBC on February 21. The stunt is best understood as projection-based protest and internet spectacle—not documented physical vandalism. Important details remain unknown, including who the participants are, what projector they used and whether every apparently random Cybertruck encounter was actually unscripted.

A Cybertruck becomes a temporary billboard
In the clips, a vehicle follows or positions itself behind a Cybertruck at night. A projected image is aligned with the truck’s rear panel so that text and graphics appear to be displayed by the Cybertruck itself. The effect is especially convincing in polished, edited video: the message seems to belong to the vehicle rather than to a screen behind it.
Fast Company, Road & Track and other outlets described the group as Cybertruck Hunters, associated with the TikTok handle @cybertruck_hunters. The account reportedly began posting around February 13, 2025. TheWrap reported that Maddow highlighted the videos on February 21, describing the activity as a new TikTok effort taking shape.

The account’s reported reach was already substantial by early March. The Daily Dot said on March 6, 2025, that the account had posted roughly 20 videos, accumulated more than 35,000 followers and received more than 1.1 million likes. Those figures are historical snapshots, not current totals; social-media metrics can change quickly and TikTok was not directly accessible for independent verification in the reporting reviewed here.
How the projection trick worked
The reported setup was straightforward in principle. The creators used a projector connected to a laptop or similar playback device, then aimed the image at the back of a Cybertruck. The Daily Dot specifically described a projector hooked up to a laptop running anti-Musk and anti-Tesla material.
No reviewed source identified the projector’s brand, model, brightness, resolution, power source or mounting system. A portable projector is therefore useful only as a general equipment reference—it should not be presented as the device used by Cybertruck Hunters, or as a recommendation to duplicate the stunt.
The visual illusion depends on several practical factors: darkness, distance, a relatively stable camera angle and careful alignment between the projected content and the tailgate. Video editing can also make the image appear more perfectly attached to the truck than it would to a person watching from the street. The available reporting does not establish whether the projection was adjusted live for every vehicle, whether some encounters were staged or whether the apparent targets were participants in a planned shoot.
Why the Cybertruck’s rear makes a workable screen
The Cybertruck’s rear profile gives the projection a broad, light-colored surface that is easy to read at night. Coverage characterized the tailgate as relatively flat and well suited to the visual gag. That is an observation about the vehicle’s shape, not a Tesla claim that the tailgate was designed to function as a display.

Tesla’s published specifications list the Cybertruck at 223.7 inches long and 95 inches wide with the mirrors extended. Tesla also lists up to 120.7 cubic feet of cargo capacity for the configurations covered on its official Cybertruck page. Those numbers help explain why the truck presents such a large rear silhouette, but they do not establish the exact usable dimensions of the projection area.
The tailgate’s position matters, too. Tesla documentation describes a flat default opening position. That provides context for the broad rear surface seen in the videos, although the reports do not say that the participants relied on one particular tailgate setting in every clip.

The projected material criticized Musk’s politics and public conduct, attacked Tesla and mocked the Cybertruck’s design. Some clips also referred to the vehicle’s recall history. One recurring line, reported by multiple outlets, described the Cybertruck as “the most recalled truck in 2024.” That wording should be treated as a slogan appearing in the videos, not as an independently established factual conclusion here.
The Daily Dot reported that some posts used a split-screen presentation, making the truck appear to show a message directly. The publication also described anti-Musk and anti-Tesla material and reported that a participant answered a comment with “I’m vengeance,” a reference to the masked presentation used in some of the clips.

Other reported slogans included political accusations, profanity and claims connected to Musk and international events. They are not all necessary to understand the stunt, and repeating them without context could turn an account of the videos into an unverified endorsement of their claims. The safer distinction is simple: the videos projected those messages; their appearance in a TikTok clip does not independently prove every allegation they contained.
The Lamborghini and the masked presentation
Several reports showed the creators using a black Lamborghini Aventador as the vehicle carrying or positioning the projection equipment. One person appeared in a Jack Skellington mask from The Nightmare Before Christmas. Those visual choices helped turn what might otherwise have been a technical projection demonstration into a recognizable piece of internet theater.
Fast Company, Road & Track and EV Powered reported those details, but none established the legal identities of the people involved, the owner of the Lamborghini or whether the same participants appeared in every video. “Cybertruck Hunters” may describe an account or informal creative group; the available reporting does not establish a formal organization, membership list or outside affiliation.
Part of the early-2025 anti-Musk backlash
The videos appeared during a broader wave of opposition to Musk and Tesla. The Guardian reported that some Tesla owners were selling, modifying or otherwise distancing themselves from their vehicles because of objections to Musk’s politics and conduct. The Cybertruck Hunters clips fit that wider backlash as a particularly visual form of protest.

- Personalize your car: Tired of boring car looks? "Claw marks" make your car look cool. Your car is like a beast! This is your most suitable choice...
- Material: Made of PET reflective material (optional color black, blue and red sticker) This car sticker and decal can withstand different weather without fading or cracking.
- Dimensions: 15.6 x 4.5 inches / 40 x 12 cm for body trim, headlights, hoods, luggage, motorcycles and scooters. Stick it anywhere you like, with self-adhesive on the back, just tear off the sticker
- Package Included: 2 Pcs Claw Mark Decals.
- Easy to install: This car sticker is sandwiched between two tapes. Then remove the backing, stick, roll again and peel and top. All done, you can cut it down the middle to fit your Headlamp, or simply stick it to the window/body as a whole.
That context does not prove that Cybertruck Hunters belonged to another protest organization. It does explain why the videos traveled beyond car content: the Cybertruck was being used as both a recognizable vehicle and a symbol associated with Musk, Tesla and the arguments surrounding them.
Projection is not the same as physical vandalism
The reviewed reports describe light being projected onto vehicles. They do not report paint, stickers, engraving or physical damage, and they do not document arrests or property-damage charges specifically connected with these projections. Calling the activity “vandalism” as a settled fact would go beyond the evidence.
That does not make the activity risk-free or automatically lawful. Projecting at or around moving traffic could distract drivers, create a road-safety issue or violate local rules depending on the circumstances and location. The reporting does not support a definitive conclusion about trespass, harassment, distracted driving or any other legal category. People should not follow, target or interfere with moving vehicles to imitate a social-media stunt.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What remains unanswered
- Who made the videos? The participants’ names and the group’s organizational structure were not established.
- What equipment was used? The projector’s make, model, brightness, resolution, power arrangement and mounting method remain unidentified.
- Where did the encounters happen? The precise cities and routes were not consistently reported.
- Were the targets unsuspecting? It has not been independently established that every Cybertruck shown was an unrelated driver rather than a coordinated participant or part of a staged shoot.
- Did Tesla or an owner respond? The reviewed sources did not document a response from Tesla or a specific Cybertruck owner.
- What happened to the account afterward? The reported follower and like counts belong to March 6, 2025, and should not be treated as current without a fresh first-party check.
Those gaps do not undermine the central visual fact reported by multiple outlets: Cybertruck Hunters used nighttime projection to turn the rear of Cybertrucks into temporary canvases for anti-Musk and anti-Tesla commentary. They do matter when distinguishing what the videos show from what viewers may assume about the people, vehicles and circumstances behind them.
