1. Nukeproof Giga 297 Carbon Elite: best for downhill speed
BikeRadar and MBUK selected the Nukeproof Giga 297 Carbon Elite as their 2022 Enduro Bike of the Year after a multi-bike test. That makes it the clearest recommendation here for riders who prioritize descending speed, aggressive cornering and race-oriented confidence.
#1 Best Overall
- Meets Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 218 (FMVSS 218). Meets DOT standards and certifications.
- Equipped with MIPS technology that reduces rotational forces during angled impacts for added protection on the track and trail
- Magnetic visor release system stays secure under roost but is designed to detach during a crash, reducing the risk of neck strain
- Nine intake and four exhaust vents help maximize airflow and moisture management, while the lightweight injection-molded polycarbonate and ABS shell construction offers a precise fit with 4 shell and 5 EPS sizes.
- Fit & Sizing: Designed for a snug, secure fit. Please measure head circumference and reference the size guide in the product images. If between sizes or unsure, size up.
The 29-inch Giga used 170 mm of rear travel. Its appeal was not simply the amount of travel, though. The test emphasized a balanced geometry package, strong cornering speed and composure when the trail became steep, rough and fast. It was the kind of bike that rewarded an assertive rider who wanted to carry momentum rather than cautiously pick through difficult sections.
The trade-off was equally important: the Giga’s gravity-oriented design demanded more effort on climbs than some less extreme enduro bikes. That does not make it a poor pedaler; it means its priorities are clear. Choose it if downhill performance matters more to you than making every transition feel efficient.
Choose the Giga if:
- You ride steep, rough descents at speed.
- You want a bike that feels calm and predictable when pushed hard.
- You are willing to accept extra climbing effort for downhill capability.
2. Specialized Enduro: best suspension performance and all-round speed
BIKE placed the Specialized S-Works Enduro first in its independent four-bike roundup. The testers praised its ability to absorb demanding terrain while remaining responsive and unusually quick under power. For riders who want a fast enduro bike that does not feel limited to downhill stages, it was the most complete performance package in that comparison.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The 2022 Enduro platform used a full-carbon FACT 11m chassis, 170 mm of travel, 29-inch wheels, a 63.9-degree head angle and a 76-degree seat angle. Those are manufacturer specifications for the 2022 Enduro Comp, not a complete specification of the S-Works bike tested by BIKE.
That distinction matters when buying used or comparing listings. The independent ride verdict applies specifically to the S-Works build. Fork, shock, brakes, wheels, tires, drivetrain and total weight can materially change how the same frame platform performs. Do not assume that an Enduro Comp will have the S-Works model’s suspension quality, weight or exact ride character simply because both carry the Enduro name.
Choose the Specialized Enduro if:
- You want substantial suspension without sacrificing responsiveness.
- You value speed both on rough descents and while accelerating out of corners.
- You are comparing builds carefully rather than judging the frame name alone.
3. Trek Slash 9.9: best for stable, long-distance enduro riding
The Trek Slash 9.9 was BIKE’s choice for riders seeking a very stable, high-speed enduro package with better climbing manners than its aggressive geometry might suggest.
BIKE highlighted the Slash’s very slack geometry, solid suspension, high-speed smoothness, integrated storage compartment and hidden mini-tool. Those practical details make a difference on long rides: carrying basic trail essentials in the frame can reduce dependence on a pack, while an integrated tool can help with minor adjustments away from the car.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDespite its downhill capability, the tested bike was reported to climb well. Relatively light wheels and rolling tires helped offset the penalty normally associated with a long-travel, slack enduro bike. The result was a compelling compromise for someone who rides big descents but still has to pedal to reach them.

- Advance Dual Sports and Dual Visor Design (Inner Smoked Visor and Outer Clear Shield);
- Light weight durable aerodynamic thermoplastic alloy shell;
- Heavily cushioned and comfortable interior, Removable and washable
- Beautiful glossy UV protective finish;
- DOT Approved; Meets Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 218 (FMVSS 218).
The main caution is the build’s premium positioning. A high-end Slash 9.9 may be attractive as a used bike, but inspect the condition of the suspension, wheels, frame storage hardware and drivetrain before comparing it with a newer or lower-spec model.
4. Rocky Mountain Altitude Carbon 70: best handling and value balance
The Rocky Mountain Altitude Carbon 70 was one of the strongest choices for riders who value handling balance over maximum flagship status. BIKE reported that its testers were unanimous about the Altitude’s specification, handling, suspension and overall balance. It scored just behind the much more expensive Specialized in the cited test.
Its strongest argument was how naturally the bike brought those qualities together. Rather than focusing exclusively on straight-line speed or minimum climbing weight, the Altitude offered a convincing middle ground: capable suspension, confident descending and handling that testers found particularly appealing.
That is why it makes sense to call the Altitude a handling and relative-value recommendation, not simply a cheaper version of a race bike. The best choice depends on whether you prefer an intuitive, balanced ride to the most extreme downhill bias.
5. Last Coal: best budget-oriented conventional recommendation
The aluminum Last Coal was BIKE’s entry-level recommendation in the cited 2022 roundup. Its equipment included RockShox Select+ suspension and a SRAM GX drivetrain, and the tested bike weighed under 15 kilograms. Those details gave it a credible starting point for riders who wanted a proper enduro bike without moving immediately to a premium carbon flagship.
BIKE found the Coal confident on descents, while its climbing performance landed in the middle of the comparison. That makes the bike attractive to riders who want capable descending behavior and a sensible equipment package, but it is not the choice for someone whose primary goal is the lightest, most efficient pedal platform.
“Budget” needs context here. This was a budget-oriented recommendation within the 2022 test field, not a guarantee that the bike remains inexpensive today. Used-bike pricing, regional availability and replacement-part support should be checked before purchase.

What makes a 2022 enduro bike different from a trail bike?
Enduro bikes occupy the space between trail and downhill bikes. They must be pedaled through climbs and transitions, but they are designed to attack steep, rough and often timed descents. Contemporary guidance generally placed enduro travel around 160 to 180 mm, although the bikes in the BikeRadar/MBUK test ranged from 150 to 180 mm.

The category was becoming increasingly gravity-oriented in 2022. Nearly half of the bikes in that comparison used mixed-wheel layouts, while others used full 29-inch wheels. Enduro bikes also tended to use burlier parts than trail bikes: stronger wheels, larger brakes, more aggressive tires and suspension components intended to withstand harder impacts.
That extra capability is useful when the trail is rough and fast, but it has consequences. More travel, tougher parts, aggressive tires and slack geometry can increase weight, rolling resistance and climbing effort. A rider who spends most of every ride on smooth, rolling trails may be better served by a lighter trail bike.
How to choose between the five bikes
Prioritize downhill behavior if your rides are steep and technical
Look for composure under braking, confident cornering and suspension that stays controlled through repeated impacts. The Giga is the most direct match for this priority, while the Slash and Enduro also suit high-speed riding in different ways.

Travel alone does not determine climbing performance. Anti-squat characteristics, shock tuning, tire choice, wheel weight and total mass all matter. The Slash’s tested combination of relatively light wheels and rolling tires helped it climb better than expected. Conversely, the Giga’s more gravity-focused design carried a clearer uphill penalty.
Judge suspension behavior, not just travel numbers
Two bikes with 170 mm of travel can feel very different. Support, small-bump sensitivity, progressivity, bottom-out control and the ability to maintain speed are more useful questions than travel alone. The contemporary tests separated these bikes by how their suspension behaved on the trail, not merely by their specification sheets.
Choose wheels according to handling preference
Full 29-inch wheels generally emphasize rollover and stability over rough ground. Mixed-wheel bikes can trade some rear-wheel rollover for a more maneuverable feel. Neither format is automatically best: rider height, terrain, cornering preference and the way you move on the bike should guide the decision.
Compare the complete build, not just the frame
Fork, shock, brakes, wheels, tires and drivetrain have a direct effect on ride quality, reliability and future maintenance. The Specialized Enduro illustrates the point particularly well: BIKE’s strongest verdict concerned the S-Works build, while the manufacturer specifications cited here describe the lower-priced Enduro Comp.

Routine work such as cleaning, drivetrain adjustment, brake maintenance, tire changes and suspension inspection is easier when the bike is held securely at a comfortable height. A mountain bike repair stand is useful for that purpose, but it is not required for every owner. As a reference point, Park Tool’s PCS-10.3 documentation describes a home workstand rated for an 80-pound load, with 18 inches of height adjustment, 360-degree clamp rotation and compatibility with most two-wheeled pedal-driven bicycles. Verify the current model, retailer, price and availability before purchasing.
2022 verdict: which one should you buy?
Choose the Nukeproof Giga 297 Carbon Elite if downhill speed and aggressive riding are your first priorities. Choose the Specialized Enduro if you want the strongest suspension-and-speed combination shown in the cited independent testing, while remembering that the S-Works result does not automatically describe the Enduro Comp.
The Trek Slash 9.9 is the more convincing choice for fast, stable rides that still involve substantial climbing. The Rocky Mountain Altitude Carbon 70 is the standout for balanced handling and relative value. The Last Coal is the sensible entry point from this historical test, provided its current condition and support situation make sense.
