1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe best car deals of December 2024 depended on what you wanted to minimize: the biggest advertised cash discounts were concentrated in luxury vehicles, Jeeps, and other slower-moving inventory; the lowest borrowing costs came from selected 0% APR offers; and some electric vehicles had unusually aggressive lease and financing support. There was no single “best” deal for every shopper.
December was a favorable negotiating environment because inventory was higher and automakers were spending more to move vehicles before the end of the year. J.D. Power forecast average manufacturer incentive spending of $3,442 per new vehicle, up 30.7% from December 2023 and equivalent to about 6.6% of MSRP. Average dealer inventory was expected to reach 55 days, compared with 38 days a year earlier. Kelley Blue Book separately reported that incentives represented approximately 8% of the average new-car transaction in November 2024, versus 5.3% one year earlier.

What counted as a good December 2024 deal?
A large rebate was not automatically the best offer. The right comparison was the verified total cost of the exact vehicle you wanted, including the negotiated price, eligible incentives, interest, taxes, fees, dealer add-ons, and—if leasing—the amount due at signing and end-of-lease obligations.

The market nevertheless offered four clear opportunities:
- Biggest advertised cash discounts: Lexus, Audi, BMW, Jeep, Lincoln, Dodge, and selected Alfa Romeo, Mercedes-Benz, and Stellantis vehicles stood out in brand-level offer data.
- Lowest financing cost: selected Chevrolet, Dodge, Ford, Jeep, Lexus, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Toyota, Volkswagen, and other models advertised 0% APR, generally for well-qualified buyers and specific terms.
- Best EV opportunity: excess 2024-model-year EV inventory led to unusually strong financing, cash, and lease support on selected vehicles.
- Best outgoing-model strategy: a remaining 2024 vehicle could be compelling when the 2025 version was not substantially different, but not every leftover 2024 model was automatically a bargain.

| Shopping objective | Notable reported opportunity | Why it stood out | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Largest base cash incentive | Lexus: up to $14,000 cash | The largest base cash figure in the J.D. Power roundup | Exact model, trim, region, inventory, expiration, and whether the offer replaced promotional financing |
| Large luxury cash discount | Audi and BMW: up to $12,500 cash; Lincoln: up to $10,000 | Potentially meaningful savings on slow-moving or highly equipped inventory | Whether the advertised amount applied to the vehicle you selected and whether loyalty or conquest eligibility was required |
| Large truck/SUV cash discount | Jeep: up to $12,000 cash; Dodge: up to $9,750; Ram: up to $6,750 | Strong year-end support on selected Stellantis products | Model-year, stock number, dealer add-ons, and the difference between cash and APR programs |
| Low-cost truck financing | 2024 Toyota Tundra: 1.99%–2.99% APR for up to 72 months on selected configurations, plus up to $3,000 cash on qualifying trims | Low interest could matter more than a larger rebate for a buyer keeping the loan | Region, configuration, credit qualification, term, and whether cash and APR could be combined |
| EV financing | 2024 Kia EV9: reported 0% APR for up to 72 months | One of the clearest low-borrowing-cost EV examples | Exact vehicle, buyer qualification, loan amount, fees, and the competing lease offer |
| EV lease | 2024 Kia EV9: reported $329 per month for 24 months with $4,849 due at signing | Low advertised payment, supported by substantial upfront cash | Taxes, acquisition and dealer fees, mileage allowance, disposition fee, and the contents of “due at signing” |
| EV/PHEV incentive | Toyota: up to $16,250; BMW: up to $12,500; Ford: up to $10,500 on qualifying electrified transactions | Some 2024 EV/PHEV programs were unusually large | Purchase versus lease treatment, vehicle eligibility, income and price requirements, and seller documentation |
These are maximum reported figures, not guaranteed transaction prices or a ranking of the cheapest vehicles. A $14,000 incentive on an expensive, heavily optioned vehicle may still produce a higher total cost than a smaller discount on a lower-priced model.
Brand-by-brand reported offers
The following table consolidates the maximum programs reported by J.D. Power for the period. “Up to” is important: the amount could apply only to certain model-year vehicles, trims, regions, customer categories, or transactions. Loyalty and conquest cash were separate programs and generally required proof of an existing vehicle or a qualifying competing brand.
| Brand | Reported cash, loyalty, or conquest offers | Reported financing | Reported PHEV/EV offer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Acura | Up to $4,000 loyalty; up to $4,000 conquest | As low as 0% APR | Up to $7,500 on qualifying transactions |
| Alfa Romeo | Up to $6,250 cash; up to $500 loyalty | Not specified in the cited roundup | Not specified |
| Audi | Up to $12,500 cash; up to $5,000 loyalty | As low as 0.99% APR | Up to $7,500 on qualifying transactions |

| Dodge | Up to $9,750 cash; $2,000 loyalty; $2,000 conquest | 0% APR on selected vehicles | Up to $7,500 on qualifying transactions |
| Ford | Up to $6,500 cash; $3,000 loyalty; $2,000 conquest | 0% APR on selected vehicles | Up to $10,500 on qualifying transactions |
| Jeep | Up to $12,000 cash; $2,000 loyalty; $2,000 conquest | 0% APR on selected vehicles | Up to $7,500 on qualifying transactions |
| Lexus | Up to $14,000 cash | As low as 0% APR | Not specified in the cited roundup |
| Lincoln | Up to $10,000 cash; up to $2,000 conquest | 0% APR on selected vehicles | Up to $3,750 on qualifying transactions |
| Mercedes-Benz | Up to $7,500 cash; up to $20,000 loyalty | As low as 3.99% APR | Not specified |
| Mitsubishi | Up to $3,500 cash; $1,000 loyalty | 0% APR on selected vehicles | Up to $7,000 on qualifying transactions |
| Nissan | Up to $3,500 cash; $2,000 loyalty | 0% APR on selected vehicles | Up to $7,500 on qualifying transactions |
| Polestar | Up to $7,500 cash; $3,000 loyalty; $3,000 conquest | 0% APR on selected vehicles | Up to $10,000 on qualifying transactions |
| Ram | Up to $6,750 cash; $2,000 loyalty; $2,000 conquest | As low as 0.9% APR | Not specified |
| Toyota | Up to $2,000 cash; $3,000 loyalty | 0% APR on selected vehicles | Up to $16,250 on qualifying transactions |
| Volkswagen | Up to $3,500 cash | 0% APR on selected vehicles | Up to $7,500 on qualifying transactions |
The same roundup also covered Chrysler, Fiat, Genesis, GMC, Honda, Hyundai, Infiniti, Jaguar, Land Rover, Mazda, MINI, Porsche, Rivian, Subaru, and Tesla. The available terms varied by vehicle and market; the source information used here did not provide a comparable maximum figure for each of those brands, so they should not be ranked by omission.
The unusually large Mercedes-Benz loyalty figure—up to $20,000—deserved especially careful verification. A headline maximum may apply to a narrow model, a particular customer status, or a specific regional program. Ask the dealer to identify the exact program code and eligibility requirement in writing.
Best low-APR example: the 2024 Toyota Tundra
For truck buyers who valued predictable financing rather than the largest cash rebate, the 2024 Toyota Tundra was one of the stronger reported examples. CarEdge listed 1.99% to 2.99% APR for up to 72 months on selected configurations, depending on region, along with as much as $3,000 in cash incentives on qualifying trims. The reported offer expired January 2, 2025.

This was not a universal Tundra offer. A buyer needed to confirm the exact configuration, ZIP code, term, credit tier, and whether the cash incentive was available with the promotional APR. Manufacturers frequently make customers choose between a low-rate program and a larger cash rebate.
For a simple illustration, suppose a $50,000 vehicle qualifies for a $12,000 rebate but the buyer must use a 7% 60-month loan. Financing the resulting $38,000 would produce roughly $7,500 in interest before taxes and fees. A 0% loan on that same $50,000 vehicle would cost $50,000 before taxes and fees, so the rebate would still be worth more in this particular example. But a $40,000 vehicle with 0% APR could cost less overall than the $50,000 vehicle carrying the much larger rebate. The comparison must use the actual negotiated prices and loan terms—not the incentive headline or monthly payment alone.
Use this formula when comparing financing offers:
Total financed cost = negotiated vehicle price − eligible cash incentives + total loan interest + taxes and fees.
Get both versions from the dealer if available: the out-the-door price with the cash rebate and the out-the-door price with promotional APR. Then request the amount financed, term, monthly payment, and total of payments for each.
Best lease example: the 2024 Kia EV9
CarEdge reported two notable December offers on the 2024 Kia EV9: 0% APR for up to 72 months and a lease advertised at $329 per month for 24 months with $4,849 due at signing. The reported expiration date was January 2, 2025.
The $329 payment was not the lease’s true monthly cost. Adding the advertised figures produces:
- 24 advertised payments × $329 = $7,896
- Amount due at signing = $4,849
- Advertised cash outlay = $12,745
- Rough cash-equivalent cost over 24 months = about $531 per month
This is an inference from the advertised terms, not a manufacturer-stated effective monthly payment. It is before taxes and fees and does not resolve what was included in the $4,849. It also does not account for mileage charges, excess wear, a possible disposition fee, or the cost of buying the vehicle at lease end. If the amount due at signing included the first payment, the payment-count convention should be confirmed rather than assumed.

CarEdge described December 2024 as especially attractive for EV shoppers because some automakers had excess 2024 EV inventory. That pressure created opportunities through cash discounts, 0% financing, and low lease payments, but local inventory and exact model eligibility remained decisive. See CarEdge’s year-end EV deal review for the period’s broader EV context.
Why leftover 2024 vehicles could be smart buys
Buying a 2024 model in December did not automatically mean accepting an obsolete vehicle. The strongest candidates were vehicles in which the 2025 model was mechanically and functionally similar, allowing the buyer to obtain essentially the same product with more manufacturer or dealer support.
Edmunds editors reviewed transaction data from most manufacturers and identified five 2024 vehicles that appeared to offer meaningful end-of-year savings. The useful principle from that review is not that every model on a dealer’s lot was a bargain. Instead, compare:
Recommended Free Tools
- What changed between the 2024 and 2025 model years?
- Is the 2024 version missing a safety, infotainment, powertrain, or driver-assistance feature you want?
- How much lower is the verified out-the-door price after incentives?
- Will the older model year affect your expected resale value or insurance cost?
- Is the vehicle actually in stock, or is the advertised discount attached to a unit that has already sold?
The AP-hosted version of Edmunds’ year-end analysis explains why an outgoing model can be attractive when the redesign is minor. The discount should compensate you for the older model year; do not buy a 2024 vehicle merely because a dealer labels it a clearance unit.
EV tax-credit rules: buying and leasing were different
Manufacturer EV or PHEV incentives were separate from the federal clean-vehicle credit. In 2024, the IRS allowed an eligible buyer to transfer a qualifying clean-vehicle credit to a registered dealer at the point of sale. That could reduce the amount paid at purchase, but eligibility depended on the vehicle, buyer income, vehicle price, seller reporting, and other requirements.
A personal lessee generally was not the owner entitled to claim the purchase credit. The lessor—the leasing company—generally owned the vehicle, although the lessor could reflect available incentives in the lease economics. Do not assume that a lease advertisement gives you the same tax treatment as purchasing the vehicle.
Before signing an EV purchase contract:
- Confirm that the exact VIN qualifies under the applicable rules.
- Confirm that your income and the vehicle’s price meet the requirements.
- Ask whether the dealer is registered and prepared to transfer the credit at the point of sale.
- Obtain the required seller documentation and review the contract to see whether the credit is being transferred or otherwise applied.
- Ask how the offer changes if you finance rather than pay cash, or if you choose a lease.
Use the IRS clean-vehicle credit guidance for the applicable rules rather than relying on a dealer’s generic “EV credit available” advertisement. Rules and vehicle eligibility can change, so historical December 2024 terms should not be reused for a later purchase.
How to compare a December deal before visiting the dealer
1. Pick the exact vehicle, not just the brand
Identify the model year, trim, drivetrain, packages, color if it affects availability, and stock number or VIN. Two vehicles with the same model name may have different equipment, destination charges, rebates, and financing eligibility.

2. Ask for the out-the-door price in writing
The Federal Trade Commission recommends confirming that the vehicle is available and obtaining the out-the-door price before visiting. Ask for a written breakdown that includes:
- Vehicle selling price
- Destination and documentation or dealer fees
- Taxes and registration
- Dealer-installed accessories
- Mandatory add-ons
- Every manufacturer, loyalty, conquest, military, college-graduate, or other incentive being applied
- Trade-in value and payoff, if applicable
Once you know the exact model, you can request an out-the-door quote from multiple dealers or use a local inventory and quote service. Treat the returned figure as a starting document: verify that it identifies a real VIN or stock number and contains no unexplained add-ons. The FTC’s car-dealer advertising guidance explains why availability and written pricing should be confirmed before you make the trip.
3. Compare cash and APR as separate transactions
Ask for two complete buyer’s orders when both programs are advertised:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Cash incentive plus the dealer’s standard available financing rate
- Promotional APR with the rebate removed or reduced
Compare the total of payments and the amount due at signing. A low monthly payment can simply reflect a longer term, while a large rebate can be offset by years of interest.
4. Verify eligibility before counting an incentive
Do not subtract a loyalty or conquest rebate from your budget until you have confirmed that you qualify. Loyalty programs typically require ownership or a current lease of the same brand; conquest programs generally require a qualifying competing vehicle. Other programs may be limited to military personnel, recent graduates, employees, or particular regions. Ask the dealer to show the eligibility requirement and whether programs can be combined.
5. Keep the trade-in separate
Obtain a realistic trade-in value and the loan payoff, but evaluate the new-car price and trade separately. A dealer can make the monthly payment look attractive by changing the trade value, loan term, down payment, or vehicle price. Compare the net out-the-door cost after all four numbers are visible.
6. Audit lease math
For a lease, calculate:
Approximate effective monthly cost = (all scheduled payments + amount due at signing + required fees) ÷ lease term.
Then add any costs excluded from the advertisement, such as taxes, registration, acquisition or disposition charges, and expected mileage or wear charges. A large capitalized-cost reduction is also money at risk if the vehicle is stolen or totaled early, so ask exactly what the upfront payment contains and whether gap coverage applies.

7. Check ownership costs before signing
A discounted vehicle can still be expensive to own. Price insurance, estimate fuel or charging costs, check maintenance intervals, and account for registration and financing costs. The lowest purchase price is not necessarily the lowest total cost of ownership.
If you want a general step-by-step manual for organizing incentives, fees, financing, and negotiation questions, a current car-buying guide can be useful as a worksheet. It should supplement—not replace—the dealer’s current written offer, the vehicle contract, or official IRS and manufacturer eligibility information.
A practical December 2024 buying strategy
- Start with inventory. Search for several identical or closely comparable 2024 vehicles so you are not negotiating around one scarce unit.
- Get competing written quotes. Send the same VIN or equipment specification to multiple dealers and request an itemized out-the-door price.
- Calculate both financing paths. Determine whether the cash rebate or low APR produces the smaller total paid.
- Check the incentive rules. Confirm model, trim, ZIP code, expiration, customer eligibility, and whether the programs stack.
- Inspect the actual vehicle. Confirm the VIN, mileage, equipment, condition, and that dealer-installed items match the written quote.
- Negotiate the transaction, not just the payment. Keep selling price, incentives, trade, down payment, APR, and term separate.
- Read the final contract. Make sure the advertised discount, APR, EV credit treatment, fees, add-ons, and amount financed appear as agreed.
Year-end pressure could improve negotiating leverage in December 2024, but it could also leave buyers with fewer choices late in the month. A vehicle that meets your needs at a verified total cost is generally a better purchase than waiting for a theoretical maximum discount on a vehicle you do not want.

Are the December 2024 car deals still available?
No offer in this guide should be assumed to be current. The J.D. Power data were checked on December 5, 2024, and the Toyota Tundra and Kia EV9 examples reported by CarEdge had expiration dates of January 2, 2025. Confirm current terms directly with the manufacturer or dealer.
Was the $14,000 Lexus incentive available to every buyer?
No. It was a maximum reported figure, not a guaranteed discount on every Lexus. Incentives varied by model, trim, ZIP code, inventory, eligibility, and expiration date. Ask for the exact program and VIN-specific price in writing.
How should I compare a cash rebate with 0% APR?
Request an out-the-door worksheet for each option. Add the cash price, taxes, fees, and total loan interest for the rebate option; compare it with the total amount paid under the 0% APR option. Do not compare monthly payments alone.
Can someone leasing an EV claim the federal clean-vehicle credit?
Generally, the leasing company—not the personal lessee—is the owner entitled to claim the purchase credit. The lessor may reflect incentives in lease pricing, but a lease does not automatically provide the same credit treatment as buying. Confirm the exact arrangement and documentation with the dealer and consult the IRS rules.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: December 2024 offered unusually strong new-car incentives, especially on selected luxury vehicles, trucks, SUVs, and EVs. But the best deal was the one that produced the lowest verified total cost for your exact VIN and financial situation—not the one with the largest advertised rebate or the smallest monthly payment.
